Man your SPA-ce!
Jasmine Singh

They are not just sitting behind the bar gulping down chilled beer, sitting in front of their laptops updating their Facebook status or zeroing-in on holiday destinations… men are enjoying more - dead sea wraps, Indian ayurvedic massage, mineral bath et al. This summer, men make up nearly a third of all spa-goers, according to the International Spa Association.

And you thought they were only checking out hot bods on FTV? In fact, a growing number of men these days are going in for spas sans any kind of inhibition. Now you know this is no longer the 'only for women thing.' So, all you men there, slog under the coolness of some bio-tech air conditioners, here is another thing you shouldn't be missing out on - gentleman facials!

So you think we can't?

Does your girlfriend take unusually long time at the parlour? Well then, it's time she knew she has competition. Try out the various spa options available in Chandigarh. Seven Sea Spa and Lounge, Sector-8 and 11, respectively, have separate packages for men, which include various kinds of treatments - International, Oriental and Ayurvedic spas. Says Munish Bajaj, executive director, Seven Seas Spa Lounge, "Surprisingly, we have an equal number of men and women clients for spa treatments. Travelling is one reason why men are exposed to luxury and beauty segment. Body relaxation, Seven Sea Signature Therapy, Aura Body Spa (Rs 2,999 for 90 minutes) is a sought-after treatment with men here. "Men don't use wrap or scrub treatments much, they rather go in for de-stressing therapies like Shirodhara and anti-ageing spa treatments," he adds.

Not Macho enough!

If all this while you were thinking spas are not a man thing, present day spas are structured in a way that they fulfill needs of both men and women. Simranjot Sandhu, hair and fashion stylist from Ludhiana has done the interior for many spas. She comments on the hesitation that men feel while entering a saloon or a spa: "Spas are now designed in a unisex way. There are special rooms for men and different therapies as well. Some five-star properties offer couple spa packages, which I must say help in breaking that hesitation factor."

A reason for you…

Okay, we agree you don't like to be pampered and treated daintily, but we give you reasons that might sound favourable.

l Hot oils and massages can sooth or even heal injuries that have occurred to the body.

l Treatments such as the saunas can help fight off common cold, which is very common among men who are exposed to the elements.

l Spa and health resort prices are reasonable these days.

l Another reason that you would agree to is that women love men who look after themselves and join a spa.

Small steps to success
In Patiala, shooting for an untitled movie by the Batra Production House, actor Harish Verma shares excerpts from his journey
Vasudha Gupta

ON SCREEN: Harish Verma

"Television is furniture, cinema is art and theatre is life" — this philosophy has helped Harish Verma explore more and make a mark in the field of television as well as cinema. In Patiala, shooting for an untitled movie by the Batra Production House, the makers of Mel Karade Rabba, Harish shares his experiences.

This 29-year old still places theatre close to his heart and credits his acting career to Sardar Gursharan Singh, a prominent theatre personality from Punjab. "It was back in college that a friend forced me to play a character in one of the plays. Sardaar Gursharan Singh Ji, fondly called paaji by us, thought I was a good actor and gave me the opportunity to work under his banner," he shares. "It was definitely due to all the lead characters I played in his plays that I have shaped my acting career well," he says.

For every actor, moving into television is the next best step. It really wasn't any different for him. The year was 2008, when Harish left Chandigarh and in one month signed Naa Ana Iss Desh Laado. "I just auditioned for the role once and was told that I was the only actor who understood the character," he quips.

And Harish is glad to be associated with a serial with a message. "My character in Laado is the only positive male character in the serial. Gursharanji taught me to try and do meaningful serials," he explains. Hopping from television to movies has been an interesting move for this young actor. A debut like Punjaaban opposite Miss Pooja has been a learning experience for Harish.

However, theatre remains closest to his heart. "I remember when paaji was nominated for a lifetime achievement award. I came down to Chandigarh and did three plays under Nukkad Natak. Nothing compares to theatre," he smiles.

Without any formal training, Harish feels that it is not necessary to learn acting. With television actors thronging the screens, Harish is certain to he will stick to positive characters. "When it comes to television, it tends to create an image and I hope to retain the image of playing constructive roles," he says.

A complete Punjabi boy, Harish is happy to have explored unfamiliar territory of television. "Mumbai has been a great town for me. It gave me work and I earn my living from there," says Harish. The only negative for this introvert is the fast-paced life of the city. "I wish I was one of those who loved partying around at night. I like to have my own space," he adds.

So, with a career set on the right path, do we hear wedding bells for this actor? "No, not yet," his voice trails off. "I hope to settle down a bit more before thinking about it," he says. As we analyse the movement of more and more youngsters into television, we ask Harish about one advice he will like to share with the struggling actors of the region. "Never, under any circumstance, give up. If you have seen a dream, work towards realising it," he says, leaving us with yet another small-town-big-dreams story!

voice over
Akshay Kumar will lend his voice to Optimus Prime, the leading transformer from Transformers 3

doTING FATHER: Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar has been chosen to lend his voice to Optimus Prime, the leading transformer from Transformers 3: The Dark of the Moon. The action superstar talks about his and his son’s Aarav’s fondness for the franchise, going back to action films, and playing the ultimate superhero.

How did you manage to dub for Transformers 3?

I consider myself very lucky to be a part of Transformers 3. I started watching the movies because of my son Aarav who absolutely adores Optimus Prime and the movies in general.

When I got to know that my voice had been chosen for the Hindi version, I swear I was the happiest man on earth. Every father wants to be his son’s superhero. It is an honour to be the voice of the greatest superhero that is Optimus Prime. This is not a business deal for me. It is only part of goodwill. I am thankful to Michael Bay, Paramount, Viacom 18, and my friends there Vikram and Neeraj for this opportunity. Apparently, Michael Bay saw my films and he liked my voice and personality and thought my “tough voice” would suit Optimus so here I am!

Is T3 your ticket to Hollywood?

No, I am very happy staying here and entertaining people. We Indians have a huge population here and abroad. I am producing a film in Hollywood but I am not acting in it.

Do you have any action films in your kitty?

At the moment, I have planned one action film called Rowdy Rathore directed by Prabhudeva. It will be my comeback to action after five years. I had taken a sabbatical from action for five years but Khatron Ke Khiladi gave me a chance to go back to action. I would like to request everybody who watches the show to not try any of those stunts at home. When we do it, a lot of safety measures are taken and they are meticulously planned and rehearsed. Physics is also involved. The viewers only have to see and enjoy the show.

Were you not offered any action films in the past five years?

I have been very lucky to have received many action films but I didn’t take them up. My son Aarav was growing up and I didn’t want him to see action films. Now he is 9 and can take care of himself. Being part of such a huge action film and superhero franchise such as Transformers 3 is a great comeback to action for me.

Is there any legendary character you want to play or transform yourself into?

Having lent my voice to Optimus Prime, I don’t need to play any other superhero. I don’t want to transform into anyone else. No character can be as big as him. He is the ultimate. As a character, he is everything I could ever ask for.

How does your son Aarav influence your film choices?

He doesn’t make demands. Being a father, I really want to do things that would make him happy. My son’s happiness means the world to me and that is the case with most parents. Your children change your life. I noticed that he’d be completely excited while watching Transformers so I wanted to do such a film that would get him equally excited and make him happy.

Which Transformers film is your favourite?

I would like to see the third one because it has been made and will be showcased in 3-D. It is about saving the planet, like the first two films. I am really looking forward to the three-dimensional angle.

How did you prepare to dub for the film?

The voice in the film was sent to Los Angeles and was tweaked and layered over there. It had to sound like the voice of a robot. It is a big deal for me that my voice reached Los Angeles. The kind of technology and angles Hollywood films use is different. Honestly, Transformers 3D is the king of 3D films. Coming back to Joker, the cameraman shoots the film differently in the sense that each scene has more depth, details, and layers. Joker and Transformers 3 are completely different films.

Do you think people will prefer your Hindi version over the other English version?

The film has been dubbed in Hindi and other Indian languages to reach a larger audience than the English version alone would have tapped. After all, everybody in India doesn't speak English so this version is for them.

Speechless: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has decided to learn sign language to communicate with her hearing-impaired fans.Gaga has been inspired to take up American sign language (ASL), after watching clips of her deaf fans singing along to her songs.

“Gaga has already campaigned for gay rights and has spoken out about political issues like immigration. Now she wants to make sure her deaf fans feel included too,” said a source.

Zoya’s in love with Spain

Zoya Akhtar has talent and she proved that with her very first film. Films are in her blood; because both her parents are writers and her brother is a director, writer, singer, and actor. After making the near-perfect Luck By Chance, she is back with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which is even bigger than her debut. The film stars Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar Hrithik Roshan, Kalki Koechlin Kashyap and Katrina Kaif, and has been entirely shot in Spain. We talk to the talented Zoya about her experiences while shooting for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

On Spain…

I want to discover every country and place in this world, and I thought, 'Why not shoot the film in Spain?' Actually, I wanted to shoot the film in Mexico, but somehow, the storyline goes with Spain. When I visited Spain while doing research for this film, I fell in love with the place. We have many travelling scenes in the film, so the roads, mountains, and beaches of Spain seemed perfect for it. We shot most of the film in Catalonia and the South of Spain.

Work

We used to work six days a week. We partied hard on our days of rest. Out of six days, one day was post-production work, so the unit was chilled-out on that day. Our unit members were mostly Spanish people, so they enjoyed shooting Bollywood songs as they had never heard them before. It was a pleasure working with them. I enjoyed every bit of shooting in Spain. We have even used Spanish words like Senorita in our songs.

Food for thought

I had some amazing food over there for the first time. All the food was delicious. Frankly speaking, I don't even remember the names of some dishes we tried out! Everything was different. We used to party in good resto-bars once a week with the unit. The star cast also enjoyed a lot.

Memories galore

I am scared of heights, but Farhan learnt sky-diving and did it almost every day while we were there. Hrithik enjoyed the most, as he was there in Spain from start to finish. It was like a working holiday for him. He too fell in love with Spain. Abhay is a genius and a workaholic. He likes exploring new things, and always comes up with new suggestions. He learnt more Spanish than any of us. All of us bonded well.

Festival of tomatoes!

The day of the Tomato Festival was the most memorable for us. We shot the festival song when the festival was going on. We had to manage the crowd, though. We shot some scenes after the festival too. We all wore white clothes during those days, and it felt like we were playing Holi with only red color. —HRM

Celebrating love: Nikki Reed and Paul Mcdonald

Twilight star Nikki Reed is reportedly engaged to American Idol contestant Paul Mcdonald. Reed and Mcdonald were spotted together looking for jewellery at the Topanga Days festival in California, but Reed wasn’t wearing her new ring at the event, suggesting Mcdonald, who made it to the top eight of the most recent season of Idol, proposed during the week.

McDonald was placed 8th on the 10th season of American Idol and was the first man among the Top 13 finalists to be voted out. The singer confirmed he was dating Reed in April this year, telling Access Hollywood she was “super cool and supportive”. MCDonald also added that Reed was quietly glad when he was voted off Idol, stating: “She is actually pumped. She said, ‘Dude, you finally get to do your thing and be yourself and be the artist you are.’ She is happy about the whole situation. She has been nothing but cool to me.” — IANS

Lopez finds love confusing

Decoding emotions: Jennifer Lopez

Even seven years after marriage, singer-actress Jennifer Lopez finds love confusing. “I think a lot of people go through life wondering if it’ll happen for them. I definitely went through stages of thinking, ‘Am I ever going to find Prince Charming,” she says.

“I admit it, I still find love the most confusing, fascinating thing in the world,” she said. Lopez has three-year-old twins Max and Emme with husband Marc Anthony. The 41-year-old, who had previously dated Ben Affleck and P. Diddy, hadn’t experienced such a “profound” feeling of love until she became a mother for the first time.

“I’m in a really happy, good place now, and when you have babies, you feel a different kind of love to anything you’ve experienced - deeper, more profound,” she said.

“No matter how much experience you have in love, you’re always learning new things about it; you’re always going to have questions you can never fully answer. I’m probably the happiest I’ve ever been in my life and my husband and my babies have everything to do with that,” she added.

Critically yours

I’m shy, sensitive and self-critical: Emma Watson Actress Emma Watson finds her personality traits weird, and says sometimes she feels she is the worst person in the world. “I’m this very weird mix. In some senses, I feel as if I’m 100 years old. In others, I still feel incredibly young, very naive and as if I haven’t seen much of the world at all. I’ve been incredibly protected, but in other ways I’ve had to be in situations that nobody my age would,” says Watson as saying.

“Sometimes I think I’m the worst person in the world to be in the situation I’m in. I’m shy, I’m sensitive and I’m self-critical. It’s a terrible combination,” she added. The 21-year-old, who shot to fame at the age of 11 when she first appeared in Harry Potter film series, also thinks her notoriety “intimidates” members of the opposite sex. — IANS

Cry baby

School time: Nicole Scherzinger

Lead singer of Pussycat Dolls Nicole Scherzinger has revealed that she was nicknamed “cry baby” at school as she was a timid child. Scherzinger, 32, who is dating Formula One ace Lewis Hamilton, 26, explained she used to be hurt by the “slightest thing”.

“My nickname at school was cry baby. I was the most fragile, vulnerable kid and very easily hurt. I’d burst into tears if anyone was mean,” she says. “It always amazes me how this kid who was so easily knocked also had this burning desire to perform. “I wanted to sing, to act, to get up on a stage and show what I could do, but when I was off that stage I was hurt by the slightest thing,” she added. — ANI

Celeb point
Losing the pounds!
divya duttta

I had always been given the 'khaate peete ghar ki ladki' tag, after all that's what Punjabis believe in - 'khao, piyo, aish karo'! I always thought being a pretty face in the film industry was good enough (I was complimented for being cute). But, I was pleasantly plump but don't they say Indian audiences don't like very skinny women! So, I went about doing my films and roles and was accepted big time as the cute 'Punjaban', especially after 'Veer Zaara'.

Life was fine until I met Madhuri Dixit on the sets of Aaja Nach Le. On the first day of the shoot, I went into a flashback mode where as a kid I had gone to a set of a Madhuri film and could not take my eyes off her.

The shoot was smooth and after every shot, we both used to sit together, exchange pleasantries and then I, the incorrigible chatterbox, offered to play dumb charades with her and she relented. And then the entire unit joined in too! It became total fun on the set!

One day, after a shot, Madhuri told me, "Divya, you are such a pretty girl, lose some weight and see the magic." There was something so genuine and loving in her concern that after years something inside me said - 'let's do it Divya!'

And believe me, it was tough! Dieting, for somebody known for gulping paranthas, butter chicken, pakoras etc, wasn't easy! Exercising was even tougher as I found it very boring, but I exercised and lost 7 kgs in one month.

Four months later, I was shooting with Ajay Devgn for 'You Me Aur Hum' and after shooting for one schedule for him in my plump avatar four months back, he looked at me and said - "Who are you? Where's the gal I had cast in my film? It looks like I changed the gal midway! You look rocking Divya!"

But someone I really wanted to meet was Madhuri Dixit. And I did bump into her at a party. She looked surprised and flashed her bright smile - "Look at you. You did listen to me after all and now see the difference!"

And I saw the difference - the cute image disappeared and I got roles that were glamorous and hot; something I hadn't done before. First in the line was Dilli 6, then Monica…and many more. The compliments poured in and that was motivation enough to continue the boring exercise regimen!

The only thing that did not work was that it wasn't taken well by my adorable Punjabi aunts when I refused to eat 'makhan wala paranthas' at their house!

Looking at me they angrily said - "Ye kya kiya? You have become so weak! Ainu kuch khilao" and one of them lovingly forced a bite of 'parantha' into my mouth saying, "Aise kaam ka kya faayda! khaao peeyo, aish karo puttar!"

Say it with flowers
Floral patterns are a favourite this season for that ultra-feminine look
Jigyasa KapoorChimra

Feminine feel: Floral patterns rule the ramp these summers

Even though it's not July yet, there is no time like now to take part in the stylish floral trends that are already making an appearance on the runways. Although floral prints have been in fashion 'off and on', but this time it is quite groundbreaking as the season offers a more romantic and intriguing take on this common spring style.

Well, if you're the one who's waiting to add colour to your wardrobe throw in your monochromatic, dreary clothing and add brilliant floral designs in all shapes and sizes to brighten your closet.

"Floral patterns on dresses, pants, jackets, blouses, and fitted blouses are sure to be popping up everywhere. Though a lot of these floral patterned short dresses and long dresses look like something out of a late 1960s movie but this is one popular trend this season," says Divya Gambir from Walnut.

Talking about floral trends in D&G 2011 spring and summer fashion show kind of indicated the trend and London as well as in Milan Fashion Weeks. Though floral trend was abstract in the past, this season it is full of decorative air, either of retro style or with the feel of the countryside. And celebrities like Rihanna, Kirsten Dunst and Chloe Sevigny have already stepped out this season in head-to-toe botanical patterns. So, when you are opting for a bold, floral print pay attention and blend it right, as some may feel that florals patterns are too youthful to gain respect. But popular designers are offering striking feminine ensembles with mature prints and daring necklines or slits that take these floral outfits from juvenile to sophisticated.

"Adding slightly sexy flourishes like sweeping necklines and fitted silhouette bodices, designers are replacing the sweetness of this childhood pattern with the daring style of a fashionable power-woman," says Neha Sidhu from Voila in Sector 8. She adds, "Floral patterns are in and are seen mostly in longer dresses, especially maxis."

Though it's inspiring to see some of the floral dresses and inventive botanical looks that grace the runways the everyday lady needs something a bit more toned down to prevent looking like a bouquet. Model Aanchal Kumar tips, "Floral dresses already attract lot of attention so one should tone down the look. Go neutral on the accessories. Make sure to tone down the rest of your look. Pull your hair up in a sleek ponytail and pair your flowery ensemble with solid pumps or strappy sandals. Gladiators are a good option."

Though possibilities are really endless with floral patterns take your pick and feel the flower power.

Bike your territory
Deepak Verma

Maneuvering through heavy traffic can be a herculean task especially if you are driving a big car. Two wheelers come as a saving grace here. I had a chance to test ride TVS Jive, an auto-clutch motorcycle through the heavy traffic. The bike promises to provide a sporty riding experience with an unparalleled combination of comfort, performance, easy operation and fuel efficiency in its category.

Propelled by a 110-cc engine with rotary gear technology coupled with an automatic clutch, you don't have to jostle hard to speed. The bike's four speed engine delivers a solid four stroke performance with 8.4 Bhp @ 7500 rpm and a torque of 8.3 Nm @5500 rpm. As expected the bike is light weight at 105 kg making it convenient to handle. So, even girls can give it a shot! Because I am too particular about the wheels, with a wheelbase of 1260 mm, it makes maneuvering easy. Now, for matter of concern, fuel capacity, 15 litre with 2.7 litres as reserve it can go on and on if, but not really.

If you are a biker, this is not the cruiser bike, plain and simple, the bike with an absence of the clutch gives rider a free gear shift experience.

A unique feature of this motorcycle is that it is not necessary that the bike has to be in neutral when you start it. The bike can be started in any gear and is fitted with an electric start for convenience. It is also the first motorcycle in the country to have an under seat storage space, large enough to hold a water bottle, vehicle documents.

What’s WEIGHING on your mind?
Unlike most men, the topic of discussion among women revolves around shedding weight
Ashima Sehajpal

Men always have a variety of topics to discuss - the fluctuating sensex, government policies, world politics, irritating bosses, liquor brands and above all…women!

With women, it's a different deal altogether. Their most serious talks range between weight loss and gain. The topic might deviate to the best boutique in the city or to someone who spent 80,000 bucks on a Louis Vuitton at the most. And if we've missed out something, here are a few women from Chandigarh guiding us!

Says Antima Jain, a medical sector employee, "The favourite topic of discussion is 'fat talk' and there's nothing bad about it. Weight is a cause of concern for every woman. Men don't get attracted to women who are overweight. So, they have to debate and do something about it." Then the serious discussions on how to get rid of flab sets in. As Antima says, "The topic has various 'off shoots'. We then discuss about dieting, sacrificing chocolates and living on diet cokes. Next comes gymming and motivational examples of women who have been able to shed weight."

Vidushi Sharma, a private firm employee, feels that if women talk about their pet issues they shouldn't be considered myopic but practical. "Women talk about the issues of immediate concern. They understand the priorities of life, so talk about food and health, which is often misquoted as discussion on weight." She doesn't mind her friends going on and on about shopping, diamonds, mother-in-laws, daughter-in-laws and fashion. "We pour out our thoughts on everything and that helps us stay calm. Men are more aggressive because they think it's silly to talk about small issues in life, which bothers them later on. "

While women do weight talk most of the time, men too at times take part in similar conversation - the only difference being they never readily accept it. "Don't men talk about their abs and biceps? They love to share with their friends which protein shake is the best, how many eggs they eat in a day or glasses of milk they drink," says Khushboo Kochar, a VJ with Channel B4U.

Instead, she says that women are secretive. "Women might do a lot of talking about weight loss but they never divulge the real facts." However, one thing she would want women to change is obsession with weight loss. "Even the skinniest girl in the world would say that she wants to lose some weight. Why can't we just be happy the way we are!"

For women who are still planning to discuss their high-fibre diet with their friends in the next meeting, it's important to know the findings of the study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Northwestern University. It states, "Fat talk further leads to body discontentment. Also, women don't go by their friends take on their weight. The reassurance doesn't work at all." So, next time think before you speak on the weight issue!

WHAT’S IN A NICK NAME!

The judges of Star Plus' dance reality show Just Dance have nicknamed each other but left out superstar Hrithik Roshan. Farah Khan got named Vividh Bharati by Vaibhavi Merchant, after Farah got a bit carried away and gave a very detailed explanation, which Vaibhavi found funny.

Farah Khan too ended up naming Vaibhavi- Gyaan Bharati as she gave loads of gyaan to a contestant. The two would call each other the given names which Hrithik found rather amusing and demanded a name for himself.

Brain talk

Every creature that forages for food decides at some point that the food source it is working on is no richer than the rest of the patch and that it's time to move on and find something better, a recent study reports.

This kind of foraging decision is a fundamental problem that goes far back in evolutionary history and is dealt with by creatures that don't even have proper brains, said Michael Platt, professor of neurobiology and director of the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience at Duke University.

Platt and his colleagues now say they've identified a function in the primate brain that appears to be handling this stay-or-go problem, the journal Nature Neuroscience reports.

They have found that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), an area of the brain known to operate while weighing conflicts, steadily increases its activity during foraging decisions until the individual decides it is time to move, according to a Duke statement.

In a lab experiment the animals were merely gazing at a preferred target on a display screen, not moving from one tree to the next, but the decision-making process was the same, Platt said. — IANS

All’s not well with RKR

missing fans: Ratan Rajput

Ratan Ka Rishta- Swayamvar 3, has been getting bad reviews, reports and Amap ratings and now sources claim, Ratan Rajput hasn't been getting along well with the contestants on the show. In one episode, she will get into a verbal argument with contestant Shoaib.

The two got abusive during a photo shoot done to check the chemistry with the guys. Apparently, he tried to get too close for comfort and his physical closeness irked Ratan.

There were many abusive words exchanged which perhaps will be deleted and things got so out of hand that he was eliminated. Shoaib lost out on a good chance as Ratan was heard praising him in the last few episodes.

time out: Sambhavna Seth

Item queen Sambhavna Seth wasn't able to last long on Khatron Ke Khiladi - Torchaar as she was eliminated in the first episode. She was upset and even a bit heartbroken about her failure and couldn't help her tears during a party hosted by the production house to celebrate the first episode of the show.

While all the other contestants were enjoying the party, apparently Sambhavna was seen crying. She was heard complaining that it was due to her partner Khalid Chaudhary that she got out of the show.

Though other contestants tried to cheer her up, she was too distressed and her mood took a turn for the worse when she saw Khalid having a ball.

Relationship status — complicated!

Dipika Samson plays a prospective bride in Colors' new show Sasural Simar Ka, but as she is married in real life, the actress has been asked to remain mum on her three-year-old marriage to Raunak Mehta. Apparently, the channel is worried that if her real life martial status is out, it might affect her on-screen image of a prospective bahu. They feel she should talk about her marriage only when her character is married in the show.
