Designer Aslam Khan sets his eyes on Chandigarh and how!
Mona

Adapting to ever changing scenario is the USP of Aslam Khan, former model, ace designer, fashion coordinator and designer representative, all rolled in one.

Very much part of country’s fashion world, Aslam has all the major shows to his credit, Lakme, Wills and is also a member of Fashion Design Council of India. An all-in-all woman fashion show in Rajasthan next and one of its kind Men’s Fashion Show lined up in Mumbai, Aslam has his eyes set on Chandigarh next.

In Chandigarh to explore the potential for an all-Aslam fashion show, he says, “I have envisioned a spectacular show. I want to give Punjab a feel of Aslam Khan’s creativity.” Known for his use of cotton and natural fabrics, Aslam’s designs have rich texture with stylish cuts, frills, tucks and piping.

I am partial to cotton as a fabric. The treated fabric is soaked three nights in water, pre-washed, stitched and then dry cleaned to give that soft feel —Aslam Khan

His upcoming woman show inspired from colours of the princely state has lenhgas, anarkalis, tight fitted churidars and shirts in silver, bronze, reds and maroons. The latest men’s collection is packed with shorts, long shorts, three-fourths and sleeveless shirts.

“I am partial to cotton as a fabric. The treated fabric is soaked three nights in water, pre washed, stitched and then dry cleaned to give that soft feel. I am experimenting with Modi thread next. The style is not just embroidery but fully textured and tailor manipulated with lots of flow,” he shares.

First time in Chandigarh—-his earlier encounter with Punjab was Ludhiana Fashion Week—- Aslam is already in love with the City Beautiful. “Chandigarh is increasingly becoming an important market, the best place to target the entire north,” says the designer from Mumbai, now based in Delhi. In partnership with Manoj Kumar, Ludhiana-based fashion designer, Aslam is here to explore the fashion potential.

Each of his collection takes inspiration from the region it’s presented in but Aslam sticks to being ‘nature friendly’. He lives, breathes fashion. “Modelling is a short lived career. Not wanting to quit the glamour world, I took up designing. I want to live in my designs long after I am gone,” signs off this fitness-freak designer.

Guiding Star
Pradeep Kharb of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi fame is in Chandigarh to open his acting school
Vasudha Gupta

Pardeep Kharb
Dream big: Pardeep Kharb

His is a typical small-town guy with a big dream story. A train journey that led him to Bollywood to struggle without a Godfather and achieving what he aimed at, makes for a success story. This is how Pardeep Kharb describes himself. Coming from a small town in Haryana, Pradeep was a regular web designer working in a small firm before his friends pushed him into modelling. Today, he is in Chandigarh to launch his acting school, Indian Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Too typical a story, we ask? “No, it’s not always that you manage to tread your way, from Haryana to Delhi and land up in Mumbai, figure the place out and create a place for your self,” he smiles.

He explains, “In Bollywood, people are like sharks ready to take advantage of you and misguide you at every possible stage. I have had my share of tough time, before that one phone call changed my life,” he says. With no family background in films, Pradeep was not even sure if he would be able to pay his next month’s rent.

“One fine day the creative head of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi called and said he wanted to meet me. Initially, I thought it was a joke, I still landed at their doorstep. It’s funny in retrospect, but shortly after that three other creative heads were fighting over me,” he smiles.

After meaty roles in Kyunki…, Kasauti and Kavyaanjali, Pardeep was disillusioned with television and craved for creative satisfaction. That’s when he decided to move to cinema and landed himself a role in Sudhir Mishra’s Khoya Khoya Chaand. “It was not easy either, I had to move away from television and ensure that no one recognised me as a television star. Moving into a shell helped as did theatre, reading and polishing my skills as an actor,” he shares.

After the small-but-much-needed-break the leap into films. With a three-minute role in Fashion, he has his stand crystal clear. “If I am good, I will be good in three minutes, if I am bad, even three hours will be a bad performance,” he says.

For this actor with his own filmy story, big names don’t scare him. “It’s only a few actors you tend to treat like seniors. Of course. Amitabh Bachchan, Amir Khan take the lead,” he says.

The negative character Tony Briganza in Ajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani was not a comfortable thing to do. “That’s what Mumbai does to you,” he smiles. “It’s really not possible for you to create a comfort zone and not explore. It taught me to disassociate the character from what I am as an individual,” he says.

The actor has decided to share his knowledge about the film industry through the medium of his acting school. “As newcomers, there is no one to really guide you. Due to which lot of talent is not reaching the right places,” he says.

So, with the dream to break the clichéd image of an acting school, Pardeep plans to reach out to the youth and show them the big world of Bollywood and be a guiding star. “There is no point being penny wise and pound foolish. I hope to embed that in the minds of those youngsters who like to dream big, like I did,” he says.

Spy-der man
Pravesh Rana is back to his business—spying on estranged couples in Emotional Atyachaar 3
Vasudha Gupta

"Each episode is a season," says Shalini Sethi, the programming head of the Bindass Team. UTV Bindass is ready to keep an eye on your lover and put him through a test of loyalty. The popular show Emotional Atyachaar will be soon launching its season three to enthrall the audience. Shalini Sethi was accompanied by Parvesh Rana, the popular host of the show, to update us on the show at Sarovar Hometel.

Introducing us with the concept of the show, Parvesh shares, "It is not easy to attract the top rung of stars till you don't have substantial quality in your show."

With Gangajal star, Ajay Devgan slated to co-host the show, Parvesh is full of beans about the upcoming season. "Ajay is a star who manages his personal and professional life the right way. You will never find him doing random things on the big screen. Considering how serious an actor he his, it's an honour for us to have him attached with us," he shares.

Elaborating us on the format of the show, Shalini says, "Our aim is to provide a credible platform to the youth to judge the loyalty of their partners." The research in the process of finalising the ‘lead’ and the ‘suspect’ tends to become a back breaking job for the programming head. She is well versed with the fact that several look at it as an opportunity to make it to the television. "As soon as we find out that either of the couple is taking us for a ride, we stop tracking them at that very moment," she says.

Dealing with hard core truth is not easy for the host as well. Sharing his side of the story, Pravesh nods, "Sometimes, people break up after eight years. My faith too tends to dwindle. So many times, when it's time for confrontation, I move into my shell to gather myself."

But relationships are a personal affair. We feel that calling it entertainment amounts to trivialising it. The defenses were strong and clear. "Trust is an integral part of any relationship. Facing the truth is not easy for anyone. But yes, everyone is curious to know what kind of people do it and why they do it," says Shalini. Nods Pravesh, "Yes, a break up is sad. But it is a mirror to society," he says.

Taking technology to another level, the show will reach out to a larger audience and showcase behind the camera scenes. Taking his responsibility as a host, Pravesh will also point out where the leads have made mistakes. "In several cases, the lead themselves force their partner to go haywire. I have decided to show them their mistakes. It's important for them to know how to handle relationships too," he smiles.

A late evening view of the park
Light & fantasy: A late evening view of the park

Some 230 pieces of stones come alive at the Open Sculpture Park at Kalagram, near railway crossing, Mani Majra. Set up with an aim to bridge the gap between art and masses by North Zone Cultural Centre, this park one of the largest in the country, houses sculptures from known names in the country like Biman Bihari Das and D Rajasekharan Nair. How about visiting these precious sculptures this Saturday evening?

Spread across a sprawling garden, the stones sourced mostly from Gujarat and Rajasthan, each have a tale to be told. Woman in varied manifestations, goddess, mother, lover, in sync with nature as well as animals and human shapes are works by artists who represent varied styles.

Most of them bear the name of the sculptor, date of creation and title. Not enclosed in a museum, this park invites people to come and enjoy a walk, stop and reflect amidst nature. Pink Duck by Ajay Kishor, Lady Guitar by Abhilash, human figures especially women with different expressions and animals, there is lot to be savoured and taken in. There is this woman by Mohd Iqbal, with hijab covering the face and just eyes visible that seem to speak. At a given time you will find two artists, usually a painter and a sculptor busy rendering masterpieces in the quiet corners. There are some wood sculptures as well. Like Peera (pain) by SM Shahid Javed. An open air theatre stands next to the park for people interested in art to come and interact. "Once a week there is an art quiz and a theatre workshop," says DS Saroya, director NZCC. The huts beyond offer quite a sight. If you are looking for a summer workshop for your kid, take a form from NZCC office. They are soon organising workshops on kathak, theatre and bhangra.

Old world charm

Baithak, a CITCO venture, recreates the magic of rural charm. A vehra, roof top restaurant, Glassi Bar and Club as well as Virasat transport you to a rural world not far from the national highway. CITCO Vehra recreates a rural house, raised platforms to sit, manjis (wooden charpoys) in place, figurines of cows, men in colourful clothes amongst the ethnically decorated mud walls with mirror work. Misty fans keep this area cool, making it a cool hangout for summer evenings. The eatery here is known for its thin, crispy jalebis. Rabbits and a lone cock add to the rural feel.

Virasat treasures the old musical instruments, utensils and crafts. A huge parat, tall brass glasses, dafli, katnal as well as old decorations that one finds no more are kept here. Stairs take one to the roof top restaurant. Divided in levels, the machans offer the privacy and feel. The restaurant has wooden ceiling and stone flooring. The steel cutlery and special menu card give it an old haveli feel. Their speciality—pindi chana and thandi kesar kheer.

Some video games seem to keep kids fit

Interactive gaming can be a step in the right direction for overweight children, says a broad-based survey.

The two-year study, conducted by The University of Auckland, is the world's most comprehensive probe into the health benefits of sustained active video gaming.

Active gaming uses wireless technology to connect controllers, motion sensors, cameras and screens, allowing software to respond to the players' movements.

Funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the study investigated the effect of active video gaming on 323 overweight and obese children.

The results showed a small but definite positive effect on body mass index (BMI) among young active gamers aged between 10 and 14 years compared to their control group. Small but positive effects were also found for snack food consumption and fitness.

Findings built on earlier smaller pilot studies at the University, showing that non-active gaming decreased and active gaming increased by 10 minutes per day for each child, according to an Auckland statement.

Principal investigator Ralph Maddison said: “Sedentary activities, such as video gaming, have been shown to be independently associated with obesity".

"We were keen to see how much active gaming might increase physical activity and improve the body composition of children who were overweight and already well-acquainted with gaming.”

Although the results on body composition were small, Maddison said: “It could have significant implications for how health professionals combat the obesity epidemic or develop rehabilitation programmes." — IANS

Hooked to depression?

We all have a fight with a friend, sometimes a divorce, the loss of a parent. But most of us get over it. Only some go on to develop major depression and stay hooked. Why?

Now a new study suggests part of the reason may be that people with depression get stuck on bad thoughts because they’re unable to turn their attention away.

“They basically get stuck in a mindset where they relive what happened to them over and over again,” says Jutta Joormann, psychologist at the University of Miami, who led the study, reports the journal Psychological Science.

She co-wrote the new study with Sara Levens and Ian H. Gotlib of Stanford University. “Even though they think, oh, it’s not helpful, I should stop thinking about this, I should get on with my life - they can’t stop doing it,” she says, according to a Miami statement.

So, Joormann thought, maybe people who get stuck on negative thoughts have problems turning their mind to a new topic.

Joormann and colleagues recruited 26 people with depression and 27 people who had never had depression. Each person sat in front of a computer and was shown three words, one at a time for a second each.

Then, they were told to remember the words either in the order they were presented or in backward order.

The computer then presented one of the three words and they were supposed to respond as quickly as they could whether that word was first, second, or third in the list. The faster they were able to give a correct answer, the better they were at thinking flexibly. People with depression had trouble re-ordering the words in their head; if they were asked to remember the words in reverse order, they took longer to give the correct answer. They had a particularly hard time if the three words had negative meanings, like ‘death’ or ‘sadness’. — IANS

Fiery fashion
Star Box Office brings you a roundup of the women that look fiery hot in red and hues of red. Some that just fizzled out...

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif
Katrina Kaif

We're still waiting for the day Katrina disappoints us. But, it's not this week ladies. She pulls off a dress that mere mortals like wouldn't dare to. She keeps accessories to a minimum... but with a body like hers, who needs bling??

Puja Gupte

The lovely lady looks gorgeous in her little red dress. But it's quite casual so maybe not the best dress to pair with gold heels. But, we just wish some of the colour would rub off on her pale-as-ghost face.

Preeti Desai

Preeti shows us that you can look hot even when you're all covered up. She's paired it well with a simple gold clutch and very minimal makeup.

Dia Mirza

She's paired her outfit well and we love that it is perfect for the summer. However, there was no need to go so matchy-matchy with the gold chain. It looks too heavy for the delicate outfit and kind of takes away from her casual look. But, we can't complain.... much.

Rani Mukerjee

The orange sari looks lovely on Rani!?We prefer her in Indian than her wannabe tube tops or minis. The princess plait looks cute and shows off her earrings and features perfectly. Her eyes are sparkling, as usual.

Ekta Kapoor

We like her guts for wearing this. She needs to lose weight but she doesn't care. She grabs eyeballs in this attractive red maxi. With her straight hair and perfect make-up, she looks good.

Deepika Padukone

How exquisitely stunning does this lady look in this summery and casual maxi! The tomato-red cotton maxi flatters her tall frame and is a perfect choice to stay stylish and comfortable in the sweltering heat.

The 21-year-old singer, who is known for writing songs based on her real life experiences, had penned a track called Enchanted for her 2010 Speak Now album, which was inspired by her first meeting with Young in New York.

"(I was) a little (heartbroken). I'm not that eloquent, and I may have said something wrong," said Young.

The 24-year-old musician, who has been mailing Swift for four months after meeting her, was left heartbroken after she started dating Gyllenhaal.

However, he is reportedly been trying to woo her back after learning of her split from the actor. But the Vanilla Sky hitmaker is yet to get a response.

"I never heard back!" added Young referring to Swift's deferred response. Swift had earlier capitalised the letters A-D-A-M in the lyrics of the CD booklet to express her interest in Young.
