Haridwar, May 29
Taking a pledge along the banks of the Ganga, Uma Bharti along with women activists in large numbers vowed to continue her ongoing agitation for the cause of the holy Ganga, even warning that if the government wanted to confine its water by way of tunnels, they would first put their lives at stake to make sure that the holy river did not get extinct. Uma Bharti, accompanied by women activists hailing from the hilly districts of Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, New Delhi and other parts of the country took a holy dip at Har-Ki-Pauri before taking the pledge and reiterating their commitment to the cause of the Ganga and its tributaries in the hilly regions of Garhwal hills.

Uma Bharti took the dip with religious fervour, emphasising the importance of the Ganga that holds special religious-spiritual significance for billions of Indians. After taking the holy dip, she performed religious rites, praying for the preservation of the sanctity of the holy Ganga and sought its blessings for her ongoing movement. Later in the evening, Uma Bharti, accompanied by prominent socio-politico-religious personalities, gathered at Alaknanda ghat where the Haridwar ‘ailaan’ was made by the politician-cum-saint. She made it quite clear that the second phase of her ongoing movement would only be over when all their demands were met and her agitation would in no way be stopped till it achieved its desired objectives. Now at Jantar Mantar, the second phase of the save Ganga movement will commence with the gherao of Parliament to pressurise the Union Government to bring a Bill to give a legal cover to the Ganga Basin River Authority as well as the review committee to take on the subject of hydro power projects with the formation of a specialised Ganga Board. Notably the first phase of her agitation that focused on the saving of the revered shrine of Mata Dhara Devi in Srinagar, Garhwal, due to a 330MW hydel project on Alaknanda river, became successful with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank accepting her demand to make sure that in no way the holy shrine got affected due to the project. While now the second phase is being termed by Uma Bharti as an agitation for cleaning the Ganga from Haridwar up to its confluence in the Bay of Bengal at Ganga Sagar.

Cong workers court arrest during CM’s visit to Rudrapur
Tribune News Service

Nainital, May 29
The much-hyped visit of the Chief Minister, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, to Rudrapur was marked by a massive protest by workers of the Congress. The workers, under the leadership of firebrand leader Tilak Raj Behed, who is also a legislator from the town, courted arrest while protesting against the announcements made by the Chief Minister.

Talking to The Tribune, Behed charged Nishank with having done nothing for the city of Rudrapur, which is the headquarters of Udham Singh Nagar district.

“What he has announced today is nothing but a bunch of old programmes, which his government has failed to execute. I have no hitch in saying that the residents of the Terai region are being treated as second-rate citizens by this government,” said Behed while claiming that hundreds of Congressmen had courted arrest under his leadership.

“The city has not witnessed such a massive protest against the Chief Minister before. He is just trying to befool the people of the area. All that was new during his visit was disbursement of cheques among the beneficiaries of social welfare schemes,” said the local legislator.

He said the people of Udham Singh Nagar are particularly agitated over the failure of the government to open a medical college in the district, which had been promised to them by the government long back.

Nishank’s popularity graph in the area is plummeting as the region has minuscule industrial development compared to what had taken place during the regime of Narayan Dutt Tiwari-led government.

During his visit, Nishank unveiled and dedicated to the people projects costing Rs 10.17 crore. Besides, he disbursed a sum of Rs 53 lakh among 198 beneficiaries of various schemes.

He also announced that Rs 11 lakh would be released for the construction of the first phase of the Chhatarpur-Bhurarani road. He also ordered the constitution of a team of officials under the District Magistrate for taking action within a fortnight against those who had usurped land. He also made announcements regarding a series of other developmental projects for the area.

‘Misdeeds’ of BJP Government
Oppn leaders to submit charge sheet to Prez
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 29
With the Assembly elections coming nearer, the Opposition Congress in Uttarakhand has decided to up the ante against the state BJP Government. While the party has been taking out “Satyagraha yatra” to highlight the alleged failures of the state government, the state party leaders would be calling upon the President of India, Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, to submit to her a charge sheet highlighting the alleged misdeeds of the state BJP Government during the past more than four years of its rule in the state.

A delegation of the senior Congress leaders, led by state president Yashpal Arya, would be meeting the President of India on June 2 in New Delhi. Besides the state Congress leaders, the in charge general secretary of the Uttarakhand Congress Birendra Singh and co-in charges, namely Bhagat Sharan Dass and Anis Ahmed, would also be part of the party delegation that will meet the President.

“We would be submitting the President a charge sheet of various acts of omissions and commissions by the state BJP Government in the past more than four years, including various scandals. Our appointment with the honourable President of India has been confirmed for June 2,” said Yashpal Arya from New Delhi.

Interestingly, the Uttarakhand Congress has decided to submit a charge sheet against the state BJP government before the President of India proceeds on a visit to the state of Uttarakhand. The President of India would be on a private visit to Raj Bhawan, Nainital, from June 5. Later, she would be the chief guest at the passing-out parade of the prestigious IMA in Dehradun on June 11.

The move by the Congress would pinch the state BJP Government as it would play host to the President of India. Already, Arya has embarked upon a “Satyagraha Yatra” against the state government since May 1 from the border town of Dharchula in Pithoragarh district. After covering the entire Kumaon region, the next phase of the yatra would start from the Garhwal region from May 31.

MP Chief Minister stops over in Haridwar

Haridwar, May 29
Acknowledging the fact that the separate state status has ushered in a development spree in the hilly state of Uttarakhand, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan has remarked that though it came a bit late, in just a span of a decade of its formation the state has taken a giant leap in various aspects, which augurs well for the country too.

Chouhan was in Haridwar today on a personal visit accompanied by members of his family. They will be undertaking a pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Badrinath. Chouhan spent the day paying obeisance at historic places and visiting several religious-spiritual leaders.

At Juna Akhada, he met Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avdeshanand Maharaj. Chauhan evaded questions on political issues, telling media persons that as he is on a pilgrimage and accompanied by his family it would be not apt to speak on any such topic.

He also avoided any statement on the agitation launched by Uma Bharti, also a former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, much to the disappointment of the media persons. Though the four-time parliamentarian from the Vidisha constituency seemed to be in awe of the natural beauty and religious-spiritual aspect of the pilgrim city, he termed it as a soothing experience.

He emphasised that with the creation of a separate state of Uttarakhand by the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance Government at the Centre, the region was witnessing development, which was not easily possible when the state was a part of Uttar Pradesh.— TNS
