Three names sent to PMO for final selection

The names of three shortlisted candidates for the post of PGI Director have finally been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s office for final selection. Interestingly, it is for the first time in the history of the institute that the institute’s body has recommended three names for the post and has allowed the Prime Minister to have the last word.

Police officials worried about their health

Yesterday’s incident of a cop suffering a heart attack has left several police officials worried about their health. “This has been the third incident of this kind since January and the second in the past six days. Many of us have started worrying about our health, seeing the high level of stress and the long hours and erratic schedule of duties,” said an inspector.

The Punjab Police will soon produce super cops at the training school for the Special Security Group (SSG) at Charbarpur village of Rajpura block in Patiala district. The school will come up on 35 acres, which Punjab Police will take on lease for 33 years.

Taking a U-turn from their statements given to the police and weakening the case of the prosecution, two key witnesses in the infamous rape on wheels case involving former UT Home Secretary NK Jain as the accused, turned hostile in court today.

Bomb hoax call: case registered
Chandigarh, May 24
A day after the police control room received a hoax call that a bomb had been planted at the district courts, the police were yet to arrest the accused. The police had registered an FIR and attempts were on to identify the accused.

Woman booked for murdering husband
Mohali, May 24
Manmohan Singh It took the Mohali Police five years to register a murder case against a married woman for killing her husband. The incident dates back to May 15, 2006, when victim Manmohan Singh, a resident of house number 1719, Phase V, died after his condition suddenly deteriorated. Taking it to be a natural death, the victim’s family cremated the body.

Servant decamps with Rs 1.84 lakh, cellphone

In the fifth incident of its type in a month, domestic help fled with Rs 1.84 lakh cash, a mobile phone and a cheque from his employer’s house in Sector 21 in the wee hours today.

3 held for planning to loot petrol station
Chandigarh, May 24
The police foiled an attempt to loot a petrol pump at Mani Majra here today. Three persons were arrested with weapons. A case under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered at Mani Majra Police Station.
