How about some shopping this Saturday? Therapeutic and exhilarating, at the same time it can also streamline the weekdays ahead, giving you a break from the last moment confusion of what to wear for the day! The essentials to stock up for the summer remain almost constant. We did a quick survey to find out what's haute this season!

'Flexi clothing' is the buzzword. In the maddening rush of life, as we hop from one appointment to another, clothes that can change the look are in. "Multi-purpose comfortable clothes go with today's lifestyle," says Kunal Rawal, the youngest fashion designer to debut and showcase at Lakme Fashion Week. With a design diploma from London College of Fashion, Kunal chose men's clothing to be his forte and believes in giving contemporary look to old Indian silhouettes.

When it comes to women fashion, it's 'capes' that are stealing the look. "This little piece of dress is multi-purpose; it can be worn over denims, short skirts, one-piece dress or a cotton kurta that assures to alter the look," says Ritu Kochhar, corporate director, INIFD-8.

Here's the assorted list. Check out if its time to retire the old 'white shirt' and get a new one. Stock up on what you lack. Happy shopping!

Eve’s world

All-round cape: Capes go well with Indian as well as western outfits. "As much part of summer as winter, find one in cotton, chanderi or Maheshwari," says Ritu Kocchar. Team it up with different pieces and alter the look!

White collared shirt: Nothing looks cooler than a crisp, white cotton shirt over a pair of denims. An absolute must have.

Pair of denim shorts: "Go for blue or white, choice is yours. Summer is for some skin show," says Varsha Khanna, fashion stylist.

Floral dresses: Choose between a floral town gown, a sheer, maxi dress or a shorter one-piece dress. Go for pastels and florals.

Ethnic chikan: An off-white chikan kurta, churidar with colourful duppatta is must summer wear. Remember Kajol in 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'?

Where to head

The 17 piazza, well all brands are here and so are the designers. If you are keen Kunal Rawal's collection, find it in Meena Bazaar, Mani Majra. Shastri market-22 has its own share of export surplus. A good chance of finding capes and dresses if you are ready to sweat it out a bit!

FIRST DAY FIRST SHOW
Chalo cinema
Mona

The viewers were spoilt for choice this Friday as some six movies hit the screen. Shor In The City, Chalo Dilli, Men Will Be Men, Naughty @40, Source Code, Thor…there was something for everyone.

Delhi belly

A comedy Chalo Dilli clicks with critics but our city audience give it thumbs down. Directed by Shashant Shah, this movie stars Vinay Pathak and Lara Dutta. A cloth merchant and a jetsetter banker come together in this road journey.

Not me

I found this road journey so boring that I decided to walk out at half time. There is nothing about the movie that could keep the viewer in the hall.

Tarun Passi, student

Sweet story

A simple travel story of mismatched partners - more of ‘Due Date’s’ Bollywood version. Could have been better, if the other characters were developed a bit. But the acting of both Lara and Vinay is superb!

Seema Sharma, teacher

Mumbai matinee

Though many movies have portrayed Mumbai before, Shor In The City found favour with critics and viewers alike. Produced under Alt Entertainment, directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, Shor starts with three guys who chance upon a rare loot on a local train, which opens up new, dangerous avenues for them. With Tusshar Kapoor, Alok Chaturvedi, Sudhir Chowdhary, Pitabash Tripathy and Sendhil Ramamurthy for cast, was the flick a hit with the audience?

Great flick

A superb flick that makes Mumbai come alive. The events keeps you hooked. Tusshar Kapoor rocks as Tilak.

Shagun Singh, college-goer

Black humour

After a long time, I have come across such a flick. A fine specimen of black humour, I recommend it to one and all.

Face of hatred
Social networking site Facebook has hate pages and hate albums created by the users for and against people they dislike
Jasmine Singh

Poonam Pandey
Poonam Pandey

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan seen with a supposed bump, Anna Hazare’s fight-till-death campaign, Poonam Pandey’s horrendous claims of going nude, Veena Malik and his ‘Aiiishmit’; Mahesh Bhatt’s fatherly slap and ‘take care’ treatment for Pakistani actress Meera…if anything is happening, it’s on Facebook!

And if you think it’s just the goody things that Facebook promotes and showcases, then we bet you still haven’t checked the ‘album of hatred’ and ‘Hate Pages’. Yes, you have heard us right, Facebook has ‘Hate Pages’, hate albums created by the users for and against people they dislike. It goes without saying that there are more people we hate than we love. Cosmic law…maybe! Veena Malik, politician Narendra Modi, actor Shah Rukh Khan, so much so Rahul Gandhi (Hey, how can you hate him?) has the privilege of having a ‘Hate Page’ to their name.
Narendra Modi Shah Rukh Khan Barack Obama

Let’s begin with Rakhi Sawant ‘We Hate Rakhi Sawant Page’, 1,65,309 people like this page, and upload pictures, on-liners, jokes on this controversial ‘silicon missing and found’ queen. Amit Puri, 22, an upcoming singer is one of the regular visitor and fan of this page. He explains the why and how of it, “Some people do such atrocious acts that you can’t help saying ‘what’s wrong with you.’ Rakhi Sawant is one such lady who comes up with the weirdest possible stuff every month. Now that I am not her friend or relative (you should be thankful), I express my disgust on Facebook. Here we have a ‘I Hate Rakhi Sawant Page’ where people like me vent their emotions for Rakhi,” he laughs. The page has suggestions for Rakhi, jokes on her, fans sharing what Rakhi should do, and what she can avoid.

Close to Rakhi Sawant are her two sisters in crime, Poonam Pandey and Veena Malik. The ‘I hate’ pages on both have a good fan following. Nearly 11,366 people share their fondness for Poonam and almost 5,029 for Veena!

Both pages have an interesting ‘Points of Hatred’ and why am I better than you sub headings, which have some funny, weird observations. A fan advices Poonam – ‘Had I been in your place, I would have kept my promise! The other one is furious and asks Veena to go back to her country. Harleen Kohli, 24, a city-based designer, was introduced to the Hate Page by her friend who had created a similar page for her boss. “This is an interesting way of mutually sharing hatred. There are many pages for celebrities. I was surprised to find one against Rahul Gandhi.”

Oh yes, not only Rahul Gandhi, the favourite Gen X politician, others like Barack Obama, Narender Modi also have dedicated fans on ‘I hate pages. What’s more, 1,9,647 people are dedicatedly following the ‘I Hate Shah Rukh Khan Page’. In fact, the actor also has a hate album to his credit. Pictures of animals that Shah Rukh Khan could look like, pictures of his smoking at public places, suggestions asking him to stay away from new actresses, finds place on this page.

It would be a sin to miss out on the page that has the highest number of fans…‘I Hate Raghu Rajiv’ page. An unbelievable 7,30,656 followers! Aha! Now you know what to do about a person you don’t really like. Hate him write on wall, right now and here on Facebook!

Uncommon sense

Commoner’ bride Kate not uncommon among royals: Study Kate Middleton may be the first commoner in four centuries to marry a future heir to the British throne, but it is not all that uncommon for royals globally to marry outside aristocracy, says a new study.

“Barely one in four princes worldwide today marry fellow royals, reveals the study of 107 royal romances since World War II, while just one in 17 European princes do so,” says the study by social networking site Badoo.com.

“Indeed, nearly three-quarters of European princes now marry commoners, rather than royals or aristocrats,” the study says. “British royals, in other words, are finally becoming more European in their approach to marriage.” Badoo’s researchers studied 107 serious romances involving princes worldwide since 1945. They came from 30 countries, 33 royal families and four continents, said the site while releasing the study to coincide with Middleton’s wedding with Prince William.

The final nail in the coffin was the fact that Ashmit’s sister Ameesha Patel didn’t invite Veena when she threw a big party. A very upset Veena left the city on Friday.

Bloom-ing fear

Orlando Bloom
Debut Pangs: Orlando Bloom

When Hollywood heartthrob Orlando Bloom was first offered the role of a cocky, eyeliner loving rocker in Sympathy for Delicious, he was terrified of the character. The British actor said that when he read the script he could not imagine himself as Stain, the egomaniacal punk band leader in Mark Ruffalo's directorial debut."That ego and that confidence and that character was so alien. There were lines of dialogue in this movie that I was just, I didn't know how I was gonna do it," said the 34-year-old actor."I told Mark 'I would love to get the opportunity to work with you on this, I'm slightly terrified of it, but I would love to give it a go'," said the star of blockbusters like Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean. — PTI

Fashionista
Up Town Girl
ritu kocHHAR

Seasons come and seasons go…at least we get an excuse to do up our wardrobes quarterly! Summer is here and maxi dresses/town gowns have been creating waves among the fashion-conscious. This wonder ensemble is chic, feminine, comfortable, flirty, flowing, versatile, stylish and most of all it is the piece to be flaunted this summer. Yes, we are referring to the super comfortable and easy maxi dress, which is back with a vengeance this summer.

A maxi dress is basically a garment for summer because of the comfort factor. This is one-piece that tends to highlight your good features while hiding your flaws. You know, it’s a maxi dress when it’s full length and flowing to the ankle level. Opt for a maxi dress that has a fitted upper half of the body, till the chest or the empire line and flowing down till the ankles. Anyone can carry this outfit with style.

The maxi dress comes in different styles, patterns and necklines from a halter, spaghetti to a tube and in a variety of fabrics in floral cotton prints, polyester, jersey, georgettes, chiffons and linens. Bold and bright floral prints are most common and nowadays we see loads of lace, crochet, hand-painting, screen-printing, ribbon-work et al.

The best quality of this garment is that its appeal changes with the accessories used. For a casual day at college or just lounging at a coffee bar, flaunt your maxi with a pair of gladiators, canvas shoes, flat slip-ons, loafers with multi-coloured bangles, a bold watch, aviators and a canvas shoulder bag. When it’s a pool side lunch calling add on a nice hat, a mull-scarf and some beaded neckpieces. The same maxi dress can be converted into a glamourous night-wear, while just slipping on a pair of sexy stilleteos, a smart clutch, long chandelier earrings, a splash of your favourite scent, highlighted cheeks and a shimmer gloss.

A maxi dress can look a little jumpy when worn with a cotton jacket, very feminine when matched with a cotton shrug or a cardigan, very formal when worn with a cape, and this versatile piece is a must-have this summer. However, when you go shopping remember to take your exact measurements to avoid picking a piece that makes you look like a balloon! When picking on a maxi, make sure it is fitted around the chest till the empire line takes the shape of your body and flows down to your ankles. If you are heavy on the hips, avoid having too much fabric there, instead opt for a soft flowing fabric that drapes well at the problem area and flows down, giving you a slimmer silhouette. Avoid long coats with the maxi as it will cut your length and will make you look shorter.

Hot destination!

Fancy some long, slit chillies cooked to creamy perfection with cheese? Or, a combination of trotter, chillies and garlic? Then Bhutan is the place you are looking for.

Someone has rightly said it is the only country in the world where chillies red and green are eaten as vegetables. And cheese too melts its way into the curries and momos of the Himalayan kingdom.

Thinley Dorji, CEO of Terma Linca Resort and Spa in Thimphu, says chillies play an important role in keeping the body warm and that is why consuming them in large amounts in daily meals is justified in Bhutan’s cold environs.

“As you know, we grow almost all types of vegetables in Bhutan, but we are chilli-loving people. You will find fresh chillies in almost everything. But when it comes to offering food to tourists, we tend to cut down on the chilli,” Linca said.

Chillies are such an integral part of their lives that almost on every rooftop, you will find people drying them out to store and use in various ways.

“We dry up a lot many vegetables like mushrooms, chillies and use them during winter when it gets difficult to get fresh vegetables,” said Tashi Lhaden, a housewife.

A most popular Bhutanese chilli cuisine is ‘emadatshi’, a mix of long, slit chillies cooked in cheese. It is not-so-hot as the cheese neutralises the sting and makes the dish creamy.

There are also dishes like kewa dachi - a mix of chilli, cheese and potato soup - and kangchu maroo - a combination of trotters, chillies and garlic. And, yes, the Bhutanese love their cheese too.

Their hot and steamy cheese momos served with hot red chilli sauce is a welcome break from the regular chicken momos that one gets to eat in India. But their best momo preparation is with beef fillings - sinking your teeth into juicy beef momos is a delightful experience.

You can pamper your taste buds with other cheese-based curries - cauliflower, mushroom or potatoes is used a lot in this region. Vegetables like cabbage, eggplant, beans and carrots are also used to make mixed vegetable curry.

“And if one wants to enjoy a region, it’s always best to gorge on the local food and drinks,” said Priya Ahluwalia, a freelancer and tourist.

Bhutan, a country of 700,000, is a rice-eating nation and irrespective of the fact that they do grow white rice, people prefer the red variety.

Apart from regular chicken, lamb and fish dishes, the Bhutanese follow various pork and beef recipes as they too help keep the body warm.

Beef and mushroom tshoem (curry), jasha maroo (minced chicken), kewa phagsha (spicy pork with potatoes) and phakash pa (pork cubes) are quite popular.

A trip to the country is not complete without sampling the various flavours of tea - like green tea, jasmine tea or tshiringma. Then there is suja, the most popular beverage made of butter - but one needs to develop a taste for this salty tea as the flavour of melting butter grows on you slowly.

A country’s cuisine is incomplete without a mention of its drinks.

Some regions have locally brewed liquors and ara is the best. Stored in ‘palangas’ or traditional containers, it is made with grains like wheat, barley, millet, maize, jowar, bajra and rice. It is fermented with yeast and there is no written recipe to follow. The method is passed from generation to generation.

Jungle lure

For a spring summer collection, it wasn’t as summery. Read long flowery gowns, trench coat, liberal use of black. On the whole, the fourteen ensembles comprised either one-piece dresses, or red carpet gowns, including a jump suit. Post the collections themed Le Baroque and St Valentine’s, students of Raffles Millennium International showcased their latest Spring/ Summer Collection 2011 on Mystery Jungle.

The Institute was given a forest atmosphere for the exhibition. Shares Omar Benitez, head of faculty, fashion design, “It is not just about the collection but the whole environment that we want to showcase.”He adds, “This time our theme is fairytale with a magic element, that’s why we called it Mystery Element. We’ve used different textures, with a lot of falls. For which the inspiration was water falls.”

The colour palette comprised black, forest green, purple, yellow, red and pink used in fabrics like satin, organza, chiffon, silk, cotton and lace. As for the darker shades, it had to represent, “the good side and the darker side” of things. Shares Omar, “We wanted to come up with something totally different and new. That’s one of the reasons we chose magic forest as our inspiration.”

The exhibition will be open to the public April 28 to May 5

Manini’s fashion mantra

Manini De Mishra
Fashion diva: Manini De Mishra

Since Manini De Mishra, aka Sasha from Rang Badalti Odhani on Star One, recently entered the show, this new character is gaining popularity for her trendy look. We catch up with the former ramp model as she shares her beauty and fashion mantras with her fans.

How would you describe your style?

Comfort is the most important aspect of my style. My style also reflects my personality, which is easygoing. I do not believe in following trends and create them instead.

What are your fashion mantras?

I make sure that my footwear suits the kind of outfit that I am wearing. Suppose I am wearing shorts then the appropriate footwear will be wedge heels or tie up heels. The colour of the outfit and shoes should contrast yet not jarring.

Which fashion trend makes you cringe?

I hate leopard-print dresses, they make me want to roar (laughs). Some people also wear strange looking gowns and I don’t know which part of the world they get them from. I also find too much lace and ruffles too feminine for my taste.

The most important items in your makeup kit?

Kajal and mascara top the list. Then I also use a good lip balm, sun block and perfume because I am crazy about fragrances.

How do you maintain your hair?

I regularly apply an equal amount of almond, castor and olive oil to my hair. However, I apply it only at the roots and ends. This routine helps me to keep my hair healthy.

What is the secret behind your flawless skin?

The secret is that I consume lots of fish and water. I also do breathing exercises like pranayam and make sure that I laugh a lot.

Whose beauty and style do you admire?

I love the way Deepika Padukone styles her hair as it accentuates her classic looks. She looks good in any outfit she wears and that’s what I admire about her.

Your character Sasha in Rang Badalti Odhani has become popular for her style. What would you say about her style?

The compliment for Sasha’s look has to be credited to the team of Rang Badalti Odhani. However, I did discuss my character’s look with my stylist. Garments do not possess an identity and it depends on the personality who is wearing it. I am open to wearing different kinds of outfits but I do forewarn the team about the colours and cuts that do not suit me. Coming from a modelling background, I am aware of what looks good on me. I am also in touch with the latest trends, thanks to my daughter. Both of us share clothes and she also gives me fashion advice. Currently, she is on a holiday in Delhi and has taken all the clothes with her. I am left with just a few jeans (laughs). —HRM
