1 killed, 4 hurt in accident
Ambala, April 29 The motor cycle was being ridden by Gurvinder Singh and Sukhvinder Singh, both residents of Kodwa Khurd village. The tractor-trailer then hit another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, injuring three persons — Ranjit, a resident of Tepla, Charanjit a resident of Bihar, and Yaseen Ali, a resident of Sangrur. Gurvinder Singh was taken to the local Command Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during midnight. Sukhvinder Singh was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, for treatment. A case has been registered in this regard.
Fire in Lalru godown
Lalru, April 29 Fire tenders from Dera Bassi, Rajpura, Dappar and Nahar were pressed into service to control the blaze. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained till the filing of the report. Dera Bassi fire officer Avtar Singh said six fire tenders were pressed into service to control the blaze. They were battling to douse the blaze. Bags of cotton kept in the godown were destroyed in the fire, he added. Factory manager OP Verma said cotton stored in the godown was meant for making fibre. He claimed that they
had incurred loss worth lakhs of rupees in the fire. |

No-confidence motion Parmod Mehta
Dera Bassi, April 29 She has mentioned model business bylaws in the Act, which state that calling a meeting on a rejected resolution within six months is a violation of municipal rules. On the other hand, executive officer Sarabjit Singh has said there is a provision for calling such a meeting and councillors in the opposition can call it. Councillors belonging to the opposition filed a requisition for a no-confidence motion for the third time on April 15. Before this, a no-confidence motion was rejected by a single vote on March 24. The executive officer sent a notice to the MC president to fix the date for a meeting on a no-confidence motion as April 28 or prior to that as it was mandatory to call a meeting within 14 days after the filing of a requisition for the motion. The MC president not only refused to call a meeting, but also filed a reply, referring to model business bylaws under the Punjab Municipal Act. The executive officer said the president’s reply, along with the bylaws mentioned, were sent to the Director, Local Bodies, for legal consent. Further action would be taken after the official’s consent. He said the opposition could call a meeting as per provisions of model business bylaws. |

3 fined for selling spurious seeds
Ambala, April 29 Retailer Antal Beej Bhandar in grain market, Ambala City, supplier Shanti Seeds Partap Mandi at Shahabad Markanda and manufacturer Shanti Seeds Pvt Ltd, Hemant Nagar, Hyderabad, were fined Rs 5,000 each by the court for selling spurious seeds to farmers. Officials of the agriculture department had claimed that samples collected by the agriculture department on the complaint of farmers were sent to the government laboratory at Karnal for examination and found to be of sub-standard quality, the sources added. |

‘Wars never end with wars’
Patiala, April 29 Rajendra Nath said Pakistan was facing several internal security problems, especially from fundamentalist and terrorist forces, while India was also facing many internal security problems, having their roots in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said as far as the problem regarding Jammu and Kashmir was concerned, India was more responsible than Pakistan in aggravating the crisis as despite commanding military edge over Pakistan, it could not solve the issue with Pakistan in the initial years. He said there was an urgent need to address security issues in the neighbourhood in a positive manner to establish peace in the region. Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh said the war-peace relationship was a complex phenomenon. “The fact that needs to be realised is that wars never end with wars,” he added. |
CTU Exam
Chandigarh, April 29 Eleven persons were arrested who had appeared for candidates due to appear in an examination of conductors in the CTU on October 4, 2010. The CBI had arrested eight persons, while the police arrested three. The CBI filed a chargesheet against Amit and Bajinder. Amit had appeared for Bajinder in the test. Last week, the CBI had filed three separate chargesheets in the case and the fourth was filed today. The exam was conducted at 68 centres where nearly 20,000 candidates appeared. |

Lambardar, nine others booked for trespass
Zirakpur, April 29 Investigating officer Kishore Chand said Taranjreet Singh had claimed that he was the caretaker of his aunt’s plot in Preet Colony. On April 24, when he started the construction work on the plot, Santokh Singh along with six others claimed the ownership of the plot and tried to encroach on it. Taranjeet informed the police on the issue. “We had asked the lambardar to produce the documents related to the plot within two days but he failed to furnish the documents,” the investigating officer added. Zirakpur SHO Yogi Raj said a case has been registered against Santokh Singh and six unidentified persons as they failed to produce the documents related to the plot. The accused would be arrested soon, the SHO added. Santokh Singh had unsuccessfully contested the Zirakpur municipal council election in 2008 from ward No. 6. In another case of trespass, the police has booked three persons on the complaint of Maj-Gen SV Singh, a resident of Gurgaon, Haryana. The accused have been identified as Kuldeep Singh, Darshan Singh and Labh Singh, residents of Lohgarh village. The police said Major-General Singh, in his complaint, stated that his mother-in-law owned a plot measuring 500 sq yd in Badal colony, Lohgarh village. Thieves decamped with jewellery and cash after breaking into two houses in different colonies here in the past 24 hours. JS Mahila, a resident of Panchsheel Enclave, said he had gone to his office while his children were away to school today. But on their return from school, they found the house ransacked. He claimed that the miscreants took away gold jewellery, Rs 35,000 in cash and other valuables. In another incident, Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Preet Colony, said his wife found the house ransacked after she returned from the market this afternoon. He claimed that the thieves decamped with Rs 40,000 in cash, gold jewellery weighing over 20 gm, a computer LCD, and a camera. The police said investigations were on in both cases. |

Robbery at MC godown
Chandigarh, April 29 In a complaint to the police, MC employees said the accused were shopkeepers whose goods were seized during an anti-encroachment drive yesterday. The police has registered a case of robbery at the Mani Majra police station. The police said after the MC staff dispersed after stocking the seized goods in the godown, shopkeepers, who were agitated over the drive, attacked the godown situated near Fun Republic in Mani Majra and took away their articles. The shopkeepers and their supporters also thrashed some MC employees in the godown. Vehicle lifters arrested
Chandigarh, April 29 The accused were coming on an Activa Honda (CH-02-B-3555) from the Sector 48 Motor Market. They were stopped as the registration number of the two-wheeler they were riding was of a taxi. On checking, they could not produce the documents of the vehicle. Their interrogation revealed that they had stolen the Activa Honda from in front of the gate of Gurdwara Kanthala Sahib, Industrial Area, Phase II, Chandigarh, where both were sewadars. Four stolen vehicles were recovered from their possession. |

Satluj academy emerge cricket champs
Panchkula, April 29 After winning the toss, St Stephen’s School decided to bat first and were bundled out for 201 runs in 36 overs. Udit Hari Mehta 46, Aman 28 and Sukhraj 28 were the main scorers for their team. For Satluj academy, Karan Goyal and Naveen Dhiman took three wickets each giving away 31 and 42 runs, respectively. In reply, Satluj Cricket Academy achieved the target easily and scored 205 runs for the loss of four wickets in 26 overs. Jaskaran Singh 71, Deepanshu Ranjanwal 53 and Manan Vohra 47 were the scorers. For St Stephen’s, Gaurav Singh was the only bowler who impressed with his bowling figures of 3 for 58. Jaskaran Singh was declared man of the match. Gaurav Singh was declared man of the series, while Udit Hari Mehta, Naveen Dhiman and Vishwas Khatak were declared best batsman, best bowler and best fielder, respectively.
