Workout Address
There is a gym in every cubbyhole of the city. Is it the music playing in the background? Or is it the pretty face working out in the forefront? Or is it the trainer moving about the premises? The place could be one sprint from your house; at times it still doesn't 'work out'. So, what works out the most for Chandigarh youngsters when it comes to choosing a fitness centre? Interestingly, the deciding factors are not so obvious.
Laughs Vikram Singh Virk, DAV college student, "Basically, for most of the youngsters, crowd is the decisive factor. Cost doesn't really count because there's a general perception that the more expensive a gym, the better the crowd it's going to have." With him the priorities don't differ much either. He says, "For me also good crowd is a deciding factor. Then come other things like spacious interiors and good environment." Err...whatever happened to the qualified trainers, equipment or infrastructure! He adds, "Almost every good gym, more or less, has the same facilities these days. So what makes the cut are the environment and profile of people coming there." After all, it's not for nothing that some of the celebrity gyms quote an annual subscription sounding like a share of the will! Who wouldn't want to work out in 'Bipasha Basu's' gym? For Anupreet Dhillon, former BCA student, reference from friends worked more than the reputation in general. She became a regular at Oceanic Gym only after trying and testing a bit of everything. "My friends used to come here. They mentioned the instructors and also it's near my house." She adds, "But it's very important for one to like the overall environment." One even confides, "We first begin with an average gym and once we have a good physique worth flaunting in front of the opposite gender, the place and location changes accordingly." The idea is to feel motivated about the place. Nods Ankuna Singh, BA, psychology student, "More than the practical factors, it's the whole environment that should give you a positive feel. If you get those good vibes, then it works out for you. Of course, good crowd makes a difference. But it's the sum total of everything." She adds, "For example, it could have the best and the rarest of equipment, but if it plays a nineties remix in the name of music, I would shun it." Everything else should work out first, before you hit the treadmill!

So, you finally decided to hit the gym? Joining one is akin to entrusting your bones and body to another set of people. Here are some of the things that your fitness centre must have. Infrastructure: This includes both equipment and the trainers. A gym must be equipped with elliptical machines, treadmills, stationery bikes, stair climbers, rowing machines, spinning bikes and range of exercise options to suit every body and shape. However, having all the right equipment without professional trainers is like having all the medicines without a qualified doctor to prescribe them. Trained and certified professionals are indispensable to your health and happiness. Environment: That includes changing facilities, population density and environment. Although saunas and steam rooms look tempting, they are often the breeding ground for germs. Location: We all lead busy lives. Any drive more than twenty minutes to the gym, sooner or later becomes an excuse for not being regular with exercise. Location should be an important factor in choosing the fitness centre. |
Tooth mark
If you thought after nape, lips, navel, arms….even earlobes, ink addicts had run out of body parts to tattoo, here come dental tattoos. So this one’s straight from Lady Gaga school of thought. And are the orthodontists calling dental tattoos “the latest trend in India”….let us find out. For the uninitiated, dental tattoos are customised designs (think a sparrow or a butterfly) that are added to the dental crowns before they are sealed and set in the mouth. The procedure decorates your tooth just as you want to. Dr Shikha Pahwa, of Everbrite Dental Clinic-37, elaborates, “They are just like other dental crowns, save for the fact that the crown goes to the tattoo artist straight from the lab. The setting process remains the same. In fact the cost too pretty much remains the same, though it depends on the design.” She adds, “The crown along with the design on an average costs anywhere around Rs 10 to 15,000.” The term can sometimes be used to describe temporary decals and stains, which can be used to decorate the teeth. Crowns are most commonly put on the rear teeth. The set of designed teeth can potentially be applied to any tooth and they run possibility of a wide gamut of styles, colours and designs. Art is ever evolving. For those who’d like to flash their smile with a dash of colour, options galore. Though the phenomenon is yet to make its presence felt in the Chandigarh, there’s awareness in the nearby metros. Adds Dr Heman Verma, Gurgaon based Orthodontist, these are basically imprints on the front and back teeth that one can get either for sometime, say a few months or permanently. A dental technician in a lab or clinic can get your favourite design on your molar or front teeth.” He adds, “Tattoos have always been an object of fascination. They represent uniqueness and individuality and are gaining popularity among college goers for pretty much the same reasons.” Diamonds and gold in the teeth is passe; this one’s yet to make its presence felt. Shares Dr Pahwa, “In India it’s not very popular. Especially in the North, there’s hardly any awareness of this procedure.” Who knows soon there could soon be vegetarians with dragons, anchors, Godzilla’s in their mouth. Many must have also baulked at the idea of nail art a decade back. manpriya@tribunemail.com |
A former anorexia sufferer has created a life-sized Barbie as a means to raise awareness about the dangers of eating disorders. The mannequin, which stands 5ft 9in tall, has a 39-inch bust, a tiny 18-inch waist and 33in hips is put to demonstrate just how unhealthy the doll’s proportions would be on a real woman. Galia Slayen, who made the model, revealed that a real woman with the same dimensions would weigh just 110lb, giving her a body mass index (BMI) of 16.24—a figure associated with eating disorders. “If Barbie was an actual woman, she would be 5ft 9in tall, have a 39-inch bust, an 18-inch waist, 33in hips and a size 3 shoe. She would not menstruate. She’d have to walk on all fours due to her proportions,” Slayen said. — ANI

Party muqabala
Minal Singh, 21, scrolls her phone book for her friend Aarya Dhir’s number, who is a designer in Ludhiana. Posh city, fancy cars, designer labels, Ludhiana is nothing less than a mini-Toronto. She dials…“Hey there. How you doing? I am visiting my cousin in Ludhiana for the weekend. What are the happening discotheques there?” she questions. A pause…followed by a throaty laughter from the other end surprises Minal. And then the reply, “You mean discotheques, a girls’ night out place where we can shake a leg to trance and electronic music. You must be out of your senses Minal.” What follows is a long dialogue between the two friends (which we assume you wouldn’t be interested in), one from a mini-metro Chandigarh and other from the ‘supposed’ metro Ludhiana. And the point of discussion — ‘where to party tonight.’ While back in Chandigarh you can still tabulate discotheques, in the Ferrari, BMW hub Ludhiana you have to scout a little hard to give that little piece of information. This doesn’t place the city on the backfoot; instead it scores 10 on 10 for the most lavish, exorbitant and unique private parties with the most amazing themes! So, we quickly find out what’s missing and what’s not there in the two cities. We want the politicians to please take note of it; this would give them additional points for their election manifesto! Private affair
Okay folks, we have a clear winner here. Ludhiana is any day more flambouyant when it comes to organising private parties. And why do say so? Check this out. Approximately 15 farmhouses around the city are the venue for the most expensive dance parties. As party organiser Chaitali Swaroop from Delhi, who is roped in to organise theme-based private parties in Ludhiana, says, “Contrary to what I thought, this city is like Vegas. People have money and party hard. I arrange for at least two private parties in a month on a very lavish scale.” Lavish, if that could be explained? “We bring down pole dancers, belly dancers, Arabic dancers from across the world. As per the demand we also get Bollywood celebrities. Other than this, fire jugglers, tattoo artists from Israel are a common thing, including celebrity DJs who play throughout the night. Designers are roped in to make theme dresses,” she explains. As for the city Chandigarh, we’d let you decide how well we score on this! Disco fever
Three cheers for Chandigarh for having some cool discotheques where you can think of shaking a leg, instead of breaking a few bottles and a dirty brawl. Pardon for being boisterous about it, but Chandigarh does have ‘sophisticated’ discotheques where girls and boys can dance on one dance floor. We repeat one dance floor without breaking anybody’s head. Adds Mannika Singh, manager, Black Magic, Chandigarh, “We have a good number of youngsters coming down from Punjab to Chandigarh over the weekends to party and enjoy. I haven’t heard of any good discotheques in Punjab or Ludhiana. If you ask me, you should compare the party scene of Delhi and Chandigarh.” (We’ll come back to this later). Musically yours
We have a tie here! Both cities can boast of interesting Deejays, who are exploring all genres of music. DJ Sameer from Chakra:Vu from Chandigarh asks whether there are any clubs in Ludhiana. “The only ‘best’ deejay I know in Ludhiana is DJ Bhanu. Otherwise, the place is only about private parties. Nevertheless, there are good freelance deejays who are scorching the music scene in that city.” jasmine@tribunemail.com |
Bollywood is changing. There is no more dancing around the trees, song sequences or overtly dramatic music sequences, which the Manmohan Desai era made legendary. However, despite the latest trends in Bollywood, which include brilliant special effects, people always go back to the 80s and 90s for their source of entertainment. It's probably the main reason why Dabangg was such a huge hit. Dabangg retained the old-school formula and was loved by the junta. We take a look at some of the actresses of the 90s who made a huge impact and whose absence is missed today. These actresses are now suddenly rumoured to making comebacks. Take a look at some of them: Karisma Kapur She quit films after marriage and relocated to Delhi. However, she’s still spotted in several social events and reality shows. She is said to be making a comeback in Zamanat, a movie which began shooting in 1996, was completed in 2003 and is still awaiting release. She says that she is also waiting for the perfect script. Raveena Tandon Raveena is remembered for her role in movies like Mohra and Andaz Apna Apna. She eventually married producer Anil Thadani and chose family over film. She made a comeback in a movie called Sandwich, which was a disaster, but she hasn’t given up hope as she has three untitled projects coming up. She is reported to be acting in Don 2 Mandakini Ram Teri Ganga Maili made her a star overnight. However, more than her film, she's known for her affair with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. It’s the main reason why she kept a low profile. She later married Buddhist monk Kagyur T Rinpoche Thaku. She recently made a comeback with a music album and has also started some Tibetan yoga classes in Mumbai. She says that if there is an offer, she will take it up. Madhoo Remembered for her role in Roja, she was a popular actress in the 90s, but suddenly disappeared. Off late, she’s been spotted in social circuits and there are rumours that she’s making a comeback in Rajshree Production’s movie. |
The meaty song gets going
The peppy music of Y Films' first venture, Luv Ka The End, was launched at a fun-filled event held at the studio. Shraddha Kapoor hosted it, while Aditi Singh Sharma enthralled audiences by singing the title track of the film.
The audiences were given gajras to wear on their wrists and money to throw when the Mutton Song played. Director Bumpy said, "This is an insane album. Ram Sampath has been my childhood hero, and I had to have him compose the songs of my film. We wanted to create music that was fresh, and something that people could sing and dance along and play on their guitars. Our lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya is a twisted and insane man, and has given us some wicked lyrics, even though he looks serious and quiet!" Shraddha Kapoor wanted to sing a song in the film and sent Ashish Patil (the producer) a message. She said, "He replied saying that it was a very nice suggestion. After having heard Aditi, I know that nobody could have sung it better than her. She is awesome!" The Mutton Song aims to take over Munni and Sheila. Director Bumpy, composer Ram Sampath, and producer Ashish Patil explain, "We knew there was a point in the film where we had to inject some fun. Usually, women are the entertainer, but here, we wanted the girls to have fun at the expense of the guy. So, we decided on the item song. When we heard the lyrics and the song with Adi, we fell down laughing, and that is when we knew it would work. This is the way we do conventional music! The singer Krishna Beura sang in five different voices. Recording the song was an unusual experience. The choreographer Aadil Sheikh brought back extras from the 70s!" Actor Taaha Shah is the lady-boy in the Mutton Song. Speaking about Taaha, they said, "Taaha was very sporting to do the song. We shot the song in a regular hotel. He was in a costume and roaming around with a bathrobe over it. The changing room was in another building. He got tired of the robe, and decided that he would stay in costume. So, in between shots, he would make faces and pout at the families who were visiting the place. It was hilarious!" —HRM |
Bollywood celebrities have their list of fan following. However, it's not very often that actors say that they are fans of another actor's work. Minissha Lamba, however, is different. She has a big fan in one of the industry's best actors, Vinay Pathak. Vinay Pathak, who has done different cinema, says, "I liked Minissha in her first film Yahaan. It was a great and film and she had done a fantastic job. I didn't feel that she was a newcomer."
He added that he was enjoying working with her in the sequel to the critically acclaimed Bheja Fry 2. "Usually people take time to open up. Minissha and I, however, clicked instantly and we spend a lot of time during the shoot by playing Antakshari and Dumb Charades." Speaking about the film, he says that his character will still continue to pursue his singing dream. "He will enter a reality show and meets Minissha over there." Bheja Fry 2 stars Kay Kay Menon, Vinay Pathak, Minissha Lamba and Amole Gupte in it. The film is suppose to release on July 15. —HRM |

Speculation about who will replace the Dunder Mifflin boss has been swirling for some time now. U…vie for the best!
For someone who did Indian Idol 4 as a mentor and senior voice-trainer, coming straight and clean on the Talent versus TRP debate is a welcome break! “There’s no dearth of talent on these shows, but they are not the best platform to promote talent. Very much because whosoever garners maximum votes is declared the winner, and channels really don’t care as much about who wins as they do about their viewership.” Singer Uvie, in the city to perform at the Chandigarh Press Club, nevertheless is geared to judge yet another music-based reality show on UTV. A platform, almost indispensable, for any struggling singer, or so it seems! “I would say it’s difficult to make a mark these days without having participated in such shows but it’s not impossible. In fact, most of the winners of such shows later fade into oblivion because by that time they are all froth and no substance. With the rest, a wrong approach and attitude becomes fatal.” He adds, “I never participated in them as a struggler when I shifted base from Chandigarh. In fact, I entered the scene only as mentor.” The Mumbai-based singer’s resume reads long and the search engine throws up numerous results - chief assistant to music duo Sajid Wajid, a couple of songs in movies ‘Baaghi, Main Aur Mrs Khanna, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’. In between figure a remix album K Factor, Gori Teri Akhiyan…apart from the countless record labels! “I did my masters in music from the Panjab University and further took vocal training from Prof. Harvinder Singh.” Needless to add, for him ‘training comes before even the passion part of music’. “That’s because the place where I stay, Mumbai, I know there are a lot of passionate people, but it’s a good base and training that makes a mark.” Coming up are, “Six different songs with music composer Sajid Wajid and three songs for Salman Khan. Last week we shot a video for my song Ek Ladki Mujhe, which should be aired on television next month.” As for the reality shows, he is very much open to hosting and judging them. ‘In the evening, I’ll be regaling the audience with some of my latest tracks, like Barkha Ritu Aaii before moving on to other typical Bollywood numbers.” manpriya@tribunemail.com |
