Gorakhpur Atomic Power Project Sushil Manav Tribune News Service
Fatehabad, April 15 Farmers have been sitting in dharna outside the mini secretariat ever since the government issued a notification for the acquisition of their land in July last year for setting up the nuclear plant at Gorakhpur Activists of some other anti-nuclear energy groups have also stepped up their activities after the nuclear crisis in Fukushima (Japan). The government has to issue another notification under section 6 of the Land Acquisition Act within one year of the first notice. “The purpose of this programme is to disseminate information on nuclear power and NPCIL. Experienced NPCIL experts have been deployed for presentations,” said Sanjay Gumasta, Chief Engineer-cum-project manager of the Gorakhpur project. “NPCIL is a PSU specialising in design, construction, operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants in India. It is one of the very few nuclear utilities in the world with the competence and capability to undertake a wide range of activities in-house under one roof,” Gumasta told The Tribune. Emphasizing the importance of nuclear plants in the country, Gumasta said the gap between demand and supply of power was substantial and over the next few decades, the growth of nuclear power was expected to be phenomenally high. The NPCIL authorities have been meeting the heads of educational institutions, industry associations and other stakeholders in Fatehabad and Hisar districts to organise interaction programmes, where senior faculty members from the corporation would answer queries about the safety aspects of the nuclear plant. |
