Ansari calls for strengthening primary education system
Nainital, March 26 The development in Uttarakhand, which is amongst the newly created states of Indian, has gathered pace over the past one decade and it is fast moving towards becoming a developed state. He pointed out that any work undertaken with the motive of service, education and environment in mind would obviously move towards achieving development. Dr Ansari underlined the need to undertake activities while addressing environmental concerns and to have the motto of service to achieve the goal of rural uplift. Despite the country having premier institutions like the IITs, a large section of the youth cannot get education in these institutions because of a weak primary education setup. The Vice-President underlined that the government had started programmes like the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan to bring about a qualitative change in the primary education, but to make the programme a success was a collective responsibility of everyone. Dr Ansari stated the Mid-day Meal scheme had been started to provide nutritious food to the children, but the parents were not aware of it. “We must ensure that such programmes reach everyone and people benefit from them,” he added. He once again stressed the need for collective and aware action to do away with the social ills and abide by the law. Referring to the activities of the sansthan, Dr Ansari said the work being done for the uplift of women and generating awareness about the environment was inspirational. He pointed out late BD Pande had always served society as an able administrator and everyone must work with commitment to make his vision of development a reality. Expressing satisfaction over the pace of development in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand, Dr Ansari pointed out schemes needed to be implemented while keeping in mind the distinct geographical conditions of the region. In her address, Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva touched upon two basic, but most important issues like sustaining the fragile environment and saving its rich biodiversity, which were confronting the nascent state
of Uttarakhand. Referring to the role of women, she said: “Women are particularly vulnerable to ecological and environmental damage, as this adversely impacts the conditions of their livelihoods and workload. Given that women have such high stakes in protecting their environment, which provides the essentials of food, fuel, fodder and water, it makes no sense that development plans allow them little or no voice in shaping policies for their own welfare, forcing them into positions of participatory exclusion”. She was all praise for the sansthan for its innovative programmes involving rural communities and its various initiatives such as the Uttarakhand Mahila Parishad. She also paid rich tributes to late BD Pande, former Cabinet Secretary and Governor of West Bengal and Punjab, and said he distinguished himself as one of the great administrators of India. Those present at the function included Cabinet Minister Bansidhar Bhagat, members of the governing body Suman Dubey, Dr HC Pathak, Dr BK Joshi, Manini Chatterji, son of late BD Pande and former civil servant Arvind Pande and his wife and Chairperson of the Prasar Bharati Mrinal Pande. |
