Student, supdt booked in cheating case
Ludhiana, March 25
Within a span of a week, a student was again caught cheating yesterday at an examination centre in Jagraon-based private school,and a case was filed against the said student. A case was also filed against the superintendent for allegedly refusing to sign in the complaint file and also ‘misbehaving’ with the members of the flying squad.

Doctor sacked for negligence

High drama prevailed at the ESI Model Hospital following a protest by the family of a patient that accused the orthopaedician of negligence during an operation in which the hipbone was put upside down.

Though recent deaths due to Tsunami in Japan has initiated a global discussion on disaster management, but municipal councillors seem to be insensitive towards it as more then two third of them remained absent from a seminar organised on the issue.

Illegal commercial activities thrive in LIT colonies
Ludhiana, March 25
HIG residential houses in Sant Isher Nagar being used for commercial activities in Ludhiana. Land use regulations are being flouted with impunity in most of the colonies developed by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust in the city. Numerous properties are being used - either fully or partially - for commercial activities while civic officials choose to look the other way for reasons best known to them.

Illegal Possession of House
Complainant threatens to commit suicide

Ludhiana, March 25
Amarjit Singh of Vardhman Nagar today threatened to commit suicide if the police authorities failed to redress his grievance. He alleged that head constable Gurdeep Singh had helped Joginder Singh and his son Anku in taking the possession of his house illegally last year.

4,000 multi-storeyed flats for urban poor
Central team inspects JNNURM project

Ludhiana, March 25
A team of Union Housing and Urban Development officials visited the site where flats are being constructed for urban poor under the Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme A team of the consultants, hired by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) along with officials of the Municipal Corporation, inspected the sites at Giaspura, Mundiyaan Kalan and Dhandari Kalan locality on Thursday where 4,000 multi-storied flats are being constructed. The team examined the quality of material being used in these flats, which are being constructed under the Basic Services for urban poor (BSUP) scheme of Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for providing houses to those living in slums.

While action against those behind taking unlawful possession of prime government land adjoining CRPF Colony in Dugri for setting up a service station is caught in red tape and the departments concerned are passing the buck, the occupants have succeeded in putting up a boundary wall and an iron gate.

Action against law violators in Feroze market

The tehbazaari wing and the police department of the civic body today issued challans to law violators at the Feroze Gandhi market and towed away vehicles parked in the no-parking zone.

Hotel industry perturbed over levying of service tax
May go on strike 

Ludhiana, March 25
After the garment industry now the hotel industry is up against arms against the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for levying service tax on the industry. Hotel industry, which is already burdened under heavy taxes is perturbed over the proposal to impose service tax in addition to the already existing luxury tax. Representatives of various associations across India will be meeting the Finance Minister on March 31 and if the service tax is not rolled back then they will be forced to go on strike.

Garment industry to go on indefinite strike

The Knitwear Club and allied hosiery associations have decided to go on an indefinite strike against the excise duty being levied on branded garments. Vinod K Thapar, president, Knitwear Club, said the Finance Minister’s announcement had come as a rude shock to the industry.

Authorities of the Municipal Corporation have expedited the work of recovering arrears pending with defaulters. The operation and maintenance wing of the civic body has recovered Rs 86.11lakh so far in two days.

Dr Manjeet Singh, a social scientist from Punjab University, Chandigarh, was addressing a gathering during a national seminar on "Child Abuse and Labour" organised by the University Grants Commission at the Arya College Ludhiana today. He said," Children below 14 years who were working, were in crores despite various laws in the Constitution of India, this menace was rampant.”
