BJP chief raps Hooda govt policies

Ambala, March 25
Haryana BJP chief Krishan Pal Gurjar inaugurated a three-day training session in Nand Lal Geeta Mandir at Tepla, near Ambala Cantt, in which more than 150 BJP workers from different places participated.

Speaking on the occasion, Gurjar said the party workers, would be briefed during training programme about large number of irregularities and scandals reported in the past over six years under the Congress rule in the state and would bring awareness among public in their respective districts.

He said efforts were being made to train BJP workers with a strong party network in Haryana, enabling people to get rid of large number of irregularities and corruption prevailing in the state.

BJP chief further condemned the anti-public and anti-farmers policies of the government, which were pushing the state towards grim situation. While addressing the media, he rapped the policies and programmes of the Haryana government.

He said the BJP would strive to revive the ancient and rich Haryanvi culture after winning the elections in the state. For the rural population, the BJP state leader said the government should take some measures to promote rainwater harvesting to arrest the decline in the water table levels. He alleged that the Congress in Haryana had failed on all fronts.

The BJP leader said acquisition of farmers’ fertile agriculture land in the state was another serious matter faced by the farmers who were unable to get even fertilisers, pesticides and seeds at reasonable prices.

Gurjar said the health services in Haryana were declining. The state was facing severe financial crisis to complete developmental programmes announced by the government in the past few years.

Ban on polybags
Vishal Mega Mart challaned

Kalka, March 25
A team of local administration officials, headed by SDM Vandna Disodia, today commenced challan campaign against the shopkeepers violating the ban on use of polybags in Kalka and Pinjore.

Official sources of the Kalka SDM office revealed that the team conducted a raid in Vishal Mega Mart showroom on the NH-22, near Kalka-Pinjore railway crossing, and issued a challan to it.

TDI employees accuse Delhi builder of bullying

Kharar, March 25
Employees of Taneja Developers and Infrastructure Limited alleged a Delhi-based builder of bullying with them. In a complaint to the Balongi police, Sanyam Dudeja, chief operating officer, Punjab, said around 2.30 pm, 50 to 60 people barged into the TDI office in Kharar.

“They threatened us of dire consequences if we did not give them crores of rupees. They said that no one could work in real estate sector in the state without giving them their share of money,” Dudeja said.

He added that the goons had come at the behest of a Delhi-based builder, who actually belonged to Amritsar. Dudeja said the goons locked up female employees and beat up the guard.

Later, they fled away from the place taking with them Rs 2 lakh and some documents. Dudeja said the same people had earlier attacked TDI’s office in Sector 22, Chandigarh, last year. The police was investigating the case.

Poultry farm fined

Chess meet begins

Fatehgarh Sahib: A three-day chess championship for hearing and speaking impaired began at Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College on Friday. Around 120 players are participating in the meet. Fatehgarh Sahib Deputy Commissioner Yashvir Mahajan interacted with the players. Vice-chairman of the Punjab Planning Commission Rajinder Bhandari inaugurated the championship. Dhananjay Bansal, president of the National Chess Association, said international players were participating in the event. — TNS

Wrestling arena in state of neglect

Kalka, March 25
Wrestling arena in the town is in a state of neglect.Situated on the Kalka-Paploha road, the arena came up at a cost of Rs 10 lakh in 1995.Residents said it seemed that the Haryana sports department and local administration were unaware of the existence of the arena.

Sardar Lachman Singh, the then MP, and former Haryana minister, had taken the initiative to construct the arena in order to promote rural sports. The panchayat of Tagra Kali Ram had allotted 4 acres for the purpose. Every year during “Guga Mari Mela”, various competitions are held, in which national-level wrestlers from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh take part in the presence of around 10,000 spectators.

Pritam Singh and Tehal Singh, organisers of the annual wrestling competitions, said the sports department should make efforts to solve the problem.

Illegal parking

Illegal parking has become a major problem in Pinjore.People park vehicles at T-points, thus putting others to inconvenience. Vehicles can be seen haphazardly parked on roads. Residents have urged the local administration to take steps to tide over the problem.

Biomedical waste plant in city likely

The city may soon get a common biomedical waste plant. As a petition filed in public interest came up for hearing, the Punjab and Haryana High Court was told by the Union of India’s counsel that the Union Government’s decision “with regard to finalisation of the tender for providing a common biomedical waste facility has been received; and the work order will be issued latest by March 31”.

The development is significant as the proposed facility for the disposal of biomedical waste is expected to cater to the requirement of all hospitals in the city, including the PGI.

For all practical purposes, there will be one common centre for the disposal of biomedical waste in the city after the new facility becomes operational.

Taking on record the assertion, the Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia asked the UT administration to file an affidavit. The PGI may file its response in the matter indicating the manner in which the existing facility is proposed to be utilised, the Bench added.

The directions came during the resumed hearing of the PIL filed by some Sector-16 residents.

In its application, the PGI said a meeting was attended by 13 professionals, having expertise in different fields under the chairmanship of PGI Medical Superintendent (MS). In it, the setting up of common biomedical waste facility was discussed.The PIL was filed in 2007 by Ominder Singh Oberoi and other residents against the burning of biomedical waste without any air pollution control device in place.

Punjab junior golf on April 7

The Punjab Golf Association will hold the first Punjab Open Junior/Sub-junior Golf Championship on the greens of the PAP Golf Club, Jalandhar Cantonment, on April 7.All golfers up to the age of 17 years, who are domiciles of Punjab, will be eligible to participate in the tournament for which entries close on April 4.

The competitions will be held in five categories for both boys and girls and it will be a nine-hole competition for those in the age group of 10-15 years.

The categories for boys will be 15 to 17 years (Category A), 13 to 14 years (B), 11 to 12 years (C), eight to 10 years (D) and up to seven years (E).

Shashi Kant, DGP, PAP, Jalandhar Cantonment, will give away the prizes.

Suresh, Ashwin race to glory

The 24th SJOBA Thunderbolt Sub-Himalayan Rally got off to an exciting start after a super special stage being held in Sector 5, Panchkula, today.

According to officials, Suresh Rana and Ashwin Naik stood first in the Gypsies category (1:51:00 minutes), while Sameer Pande and Daljit Sahi finished second (1:54:60). Aman Ahluwalia and Jatinder Shukla finished third in the event with 1:54:62 on the clock.

While in the cars category, Anil Wadia and Parminder Thakur emerged winners (1:52 minutes), Jagbir Singh Nirwan and Shivkaran Mokha stood second (1:55 minutes), whereas Udaibir Sangha and Jasmohan Singh finished third (1:59 minutes).

In the bikes category, Mohit Verma completed the race in 2:04 minutes to attain the top position, while Gagandeep Rekhi (2:06 minutes) stood second and Nitinjit Singh Bawa finished third (2:11 minutes).

For the second leg of the challenge rally, the teams will leave for Koti Resorts for a night halt on March 26. The teams will return the next day.

Teams competing in the endurance category will leave for Koti Resorts on March 27.

Board President XI emerge champs

Board President XI won the Central Revenue Sports Board (CRSB) Invitation Cricket Tournament held at the Sector 16 cricket stadium here today.The winners defeated West Zone by 40 runs.

Batting first, Board President XI made 194 runs for 2 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Rohit Dahiya made a quick fire 81 off 46 balls, while Rikin Chouhan contributed 47 runs to the team’s total. Ajinkya Joshi and Mandar G took one wicket each.

In reply, West Zone managed to make 152 for 7.

H Shah (34) and S Bagul (32) topped the score chart. Jay Desai took five wickets.

Karandeep pockets U-12 singles title

The in-form local tennis player, Karandeep Singh lift the title of the boys’ U-12 singles category at the CLTA-AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament for both boys and girls (U-12 and U-14) held at the CLTA Courts, Sector 10, here today.

Karandeep Singh got the better of Shree Krishna from Bihar by 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets.

In the boys’ U-14 category, another CLTA Academy fourth rank player, Sachin Kumar defeated Udayan Bhakaar from Rajasthan by 6-3, 6-2 to lift the title.

Girls (U-12) singles: Pranjala Yadlapalli (AP) bt Snehal Umesh Mane (MAH) 6-0, 6-1.

Girls (U-14): Prabhuti Singhania (MAH) bt Victoria Chahal (HAR) 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4.

212 PU sportspersons honoured

Around 212 sportspersons who brought laurels to Panjab University by securing top positions in the national-level tournament and All-India Inter-University Championships were given cash prizes at the annual sports prize distribution function of directorate of sports, PU, at Gymnasium Hall here today.

According to the sports department, cash prizes worth Rs 13.6 lakh were awarded to winners.

The city colleges that secured the first position in the Panjab University Inter-College

Tournaments, were given trophies, whereas mementos were presented to sports promoters of the city. Director sports Dr CS Grewal enlisted achievements of the university.
