The police today solved the murder of 23-year-old Akashdeep Malhotra, who was found bludgeoned to death near the Sukhna Lake, on Wednesday.

Mohali to have 99 liquor vends
Mohali, March 18
The number of liquor vends in Mohali have been decreased to 99 from 102 in the new Excise Policy 2011-2012. The number of groups have also been fixed at 24 compared to 34 last year, meaning that small players would have a tough time in participating in the draw of lots.

City tops country in road fatalities per capita
Chandigarh, March 18
The ‘City Beautiful’ now ranks first in another urban parameter, though dubious this time. Already known for having the highest per capita income and the largest number of vehicles per person, the country’s “richest” city with sprawling roads and ornate rotaries has now added a new distinction - it leads in the fatal road accident rates per capita.

Zirakpur council in HC line of fire
The Zirakpur municipal council has now come in the Punjab & Haryana High Court’s line of fire. Justice Rajive Bhalla ruled: “Despite the absence of any permission or access to the national highway, the town’s municipal council has sanctioned building plans for hotels, shops and other establishments that have no right of access to the highway. Before sanctioning any plans the council should take note of the absence of any permission and direct parties to approach the authority concerned for providing access to the highway.”

Kidnap drama in Sector 26
Panchkula, March 18
High drama was witnessed at Sector 26 as a family alleged that a man tried to kidnap their six-year-old daughter from outside their residence.However, the police refuted the claim, stating that the man was under the influence of liquor and was not involved in kidnapping.

UNITED COLOURS OF HOLI
‘Liveliest’ celebrations on PU campus
Chandigarh, March 18
Panjab University campus was draped in the colours of Holi today as students from different departments splashed colours on each other to celebrate the festival. This year’s Holi celebrations on the campus were the liveliest, said certain faculty members.


The Big Splash: Holi spirit pervaded Panjab University as students drawn from various departments were at their expressive best, drenching each other with water and applying colours to each other ahead of the festival on Friday. Tribune lensman S Chandan captured some of them in their festive mood on the campus.

Harmful colours may spoil festivity
Chandigarh, March 18
Though city residents are all set to let their hair down on Holi, there is a word of caution from experts. The bright colours that come in vibrant shades and are available in markets in urban as well as rural areas, besides slums, can be a mix of harmful industrial dyes, chemicals or engine oil.

Notwithstanding the apex court’s order debarring consumer courts from entertaining disputes related to telephone connections and billing, the UT district consumer forum has been passing orders in such cases, only to be turned down by the commission.

Jet Airways penalised for loss of baggage

The UT Consumer District Forum has directed the station manager of Jet Airways, Chandigarh airport, to pay Rs 6,403 in compensation for misplacing the baggage of a local resident.

Power cuts are here
Mohali, March 18
Even as the day temperature has started to rise, residents face inconvenience due to power cuts imposed in Mohali.Though officials of the Punjab State Power Corporation claimed that power cuts were being imposed only for an hour or so daily, residents witnessed power disruptions, in addition to the scheduled timings, over the past three days.

The Mohali police have sought the production warrants of the Tanishq dacoity suspects to probe their role in the robbery at a Nokia godown at Badh Majra village in Kharar in 2009.The main suspect in the Tanishq dacoity is Paras Soni, alias Pritpal Singh. In December 2009, mobile handsets worth lakhs were stolen after drugging three security guards.

PU fails to publicise scholarship scheme
Of Rs 12 lakh that was earmarked as scholarship fund for underprivileged students, only Rs 3.5 lakh was disbursed.

Mega job fair
Chandigarh, March 18
Gurukul Vidyapeeth in association with Panache Global Consultant held a mega job fair here today. Over 1,200 students from 26 technical and management colleges from various parts of north region participated. According to a press not issued here, HR heads of 20 companies, including 11 MNCs, were present at the fair. The fair was organised to provide a genuine platform to managment and engineering graduates in the corporate sector.— TNS

Chandigarh: EuroKids, Sector 18, held its annual day celebrations on Friday at Motiram Arya School Auditorium. The teachers of EuroKids, trained the tiny tots to present an array of programmes. The Civil Hospital here is all set to get a facelift and have more basic facilities as the Haryana government has sanctioned a grant of Rs 80 lakh for its renovation.Official sources here have disclosed that the Haryana government had sanctioned the grant for strengthening infrastructure at the hospital, which has been in a dilapidated state for quite some time.

20-year-old woman commits suicide

A 20-year-old housewife reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Dadu Majra today.The incident came to light around 2 pm when the victim, Mona Lisa, was found hanging from fan by her husband, Parsonjit Lisa.

Patwari rams vehicle into bike, flees in undergarments
Zirakpur, March 18
Violating traffic rules, a revenue official left behind a trail of destruction and his garments. Leaving a person seriously injured on the Zirakpur flyover after ramming his car into two vehicles, a patwari was seen making good escape from the spot in his undergarments.

Man assaulted
Mohali, March 18
A Mirzapur resident, Kuldeep Singh, was assaulted by car-borne youths last night after he complained about violations in the Mirzapur forest area.He reported that he was moving in his car with friends when some unidentified youths, in a Ford Endeavour, intercepted them and started thrashing him with rods.
