Automobile fans are eagerly awaiting Ferrari’s launch in India. Some of them share their experience of driving the luxury car abroad
Jasmine Singh

How does getting behind the controls of a jazzy car feel? I bet words fail…and when the machine is a sparkling, dazzling Ferrari, the laps definitely become endless. With the company finally making their official launch in collaboration with Shreyan Group (managing local operations in India), fans, who have either had the experience of getting close to the sleek machine at auto expos or have taken a test drive, share why the heart races and oxygen gushes in the body behind the controls!

‘Exhilarating experience’

Isn’t it strange that every second person I meet, dreams of buying a Ferrari one day. This is like one childhood dream common to every automobile-crazy person. I drove a splendid Ferrari 360 Modena for six miles in England. I can’t describe how I felt; I just wanted to go on and on. At the same time I wanted to stop and see whether it was real. What I love about the car is its speed; I believe this is the sharpest car in the world.

‘Breathtakingly sexy’

My friend owns an F 430. He doesn’t give anyone the keys; a test drive is a big no…the closest I got to the machine was when he offered me a ride back home. The Ferrari is amazingly sexy and very expensive as well, but it has low ground clearance, which is a dampener. It doesn’t have enough leg space, so a 6 ft 2-inch tall guy like me had to make a lot of adjustment to enjoy the ride.

‘Getting sporty’

The dream machine: Karan Singh Kairon

I had the chance of driving my uncle’s Enzo V 12 when I visited him in England. This is a sporty model and a luxurious one as well. It’s good to hear that Ferrari is coming to India soon. We have great roads; Chandigarh definitely has nice roads, which means no hue and cry about ‘Indian roads not fit for Ferrari.’ Coming back to my experience with Enzo V12, it was awesome. The acceleration is amazing; it reaches 100 kmph in less than four seconds! Not to forget, the machine is an expensive buy.

Designers break free and present creations inspired from tuk tuk autos, patachitra and even madhubani paintings at the Lakme Fashion Week

Day 4 of the Lakme Fashion Week and a relatively new designer Sabah Khan hogs the limelight. Unusual inspiration behind their designs and a non-conformist treatment given to the collections attracted everyone.

What Nida Mehmood did last season at the Wills India Lifestyle Fashion Week with her collection inspired from bicycles, Sabah Khan has done it in this season of Lakme Fashion Week with her auto rickshaw inspired creations. Titled Tuk Tuk, another name for auto rickshaws in the country, she has also dedicated accessories to the public vehicle. The critics appreciated her show for its innovative concept backed by a social cause on Monday. “I was pretty confident that the show would catch the attention of clients as well as the critics. The auto rickshaw motifs were aesthetically used on the clothes and handbags,” says Sabah.

The fabric used by her is pure linen with a bit of synthetic. The colour scheme is largely earthy tones mixed with bright colours like yellow, orange. “I have always maintained that contrasts bring out the beauty of colours than monochromatic tones. I have thus used a lot of black so that the other colours get highlighted well,” she says.

The 3D designs by Parvesh and Jai were not to be missed at the LFW. The designer duo’s collection was inspired from the Madhubani paintings, which celebrate the beauty of Nature. “All motifs are hand painted. The 3D shape is created using feathers.

For a garment inspired from a fish painting, instead of painting the motif, we designed a fish shaped blouse,” says Parvesh. Done largely in aqua colours, the collection is in tandem with Resortwear, the official theme of the fashion event.

Folk art was also the theme picked by Manas Dash. His creations had motifs picked from patachitra, folk art of Orissa.

“Pata means canvas and chitra stands for drawing. I have used clothes as the canvas for the art form. The treatment, however given to the art form is very contemporary. The silhouettes are very modern and edgy.” There are flowy tops, leggings, kurtis and evening dresses in the collection.

Meiyang Chang was underdog of Jhalak...

Well-known choreographer Remo D’Souza and judge of Sony’s dance show Jhalak Dikhla Ja feels that Meiyang Chang deserved to be the winner as he was the underdog on Jhalak. Ecstatic about his co-judges, the two dancing divas-Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Malaika Arora Khan, he gets candid about his journey in Jhalak, Madhuri Dixit and his directorial debut.

Three is company: (L-R) Malaika Arora Khan, Remo D’ Souza & Madhuri Dixit

Tell us about your journey as a judge in Jhalak?

The journey was beautiful and brilliant. I had a great time each week with two dancing divas Madhuri Dixit and Malaika Arora Khan. Moreover, we had some big celebrities from the television world showcasing their dancing talent. The whole season was very positive and there was no drama, normally seen in other dance reality shows. Jhalak was great and unforgettable for me.

Any memorable moment that you can share with us?

I feel every moment was memorable for me. I used to wait for Thursdays, so that I meet Madhuriji and also be bowled over by the dancing talent of the contestants. The show worked because of the different style of performances. It was an honour to declare the winner of Jhalak and the most memorable moment for me as judge.

What do you want to say about Madhuri’s comeback on television and how was it meeting with her?

Jhalak’s main attraction was Madhuri Dixit as the judge and I think the show became such a huge hit because of her comeback on television. For me, she is an all rounder who has proved herself in — acting, dancing, motherhood and as a judge.

As a choreographer, what do you think about Madhuri and Malaika’s dancing talent?

You can’t compare Malaika and Madhuriji. Madhuriji has done so many films and her dance numbers are legendary. Malaika is also a very good dancer and has made a name for herself as well.

Who was your favourite contestant?

From the top three contestants, all were my favourites. Yana Gupta, Sushant Singh Rajput and Meiyang Chang all were brilliant. All of them had an eventful journey in this show and it was a very enriching experience for me.

Which was your favourite dance act this season?

There were lot of cool performances but I loved (Betrayal) Ghost dance of Sushant-Shampa, Storm dance of Meiyang Chang–Marischa and Prince and Princess dance of Yana Gupta.

Are you following Dance India Dance Doubles?

I was busy with my film Faltu and then Jhalak, so I haven’t been able to follow the show. But I want to thank to Zee TV and Dance India Dance who gave me name and fame on television.

What’s next after Jhalak?

I am waiting for my first directorial attempt F.A.L.T.U to release on April 1.

Ainvayi Ainvayi — Band Baja Baraat

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlKsbM121GE

This track is doing the rounds and indeed it is a foot-tapping number. Simply, I can get people to dance on this number easily. This number is not only about good steps and two good looking actors Randhir Kapoor and Anusha Sharma, it is the music of the song that appeals.

I like this track for its funky rhyming, the energy it has and the drum and bass style blended with the music. A bit of Punjabi touch does the needful, lifting its tempo and mood. This track has a lot of remixed versions to it, which are good. But I think the original one pretty much foot-tapping.

Zarine is Ready, thanks to Salman

Zarine Khan credits her Veer co-star Salman Khan for her cameo in director Anees Bazmee’s Ready and says she has got a very glamorous makeover for the role.
“It’s a cameo with a club song. Salman offered me to do this and I would never say no to Salman,” Zarine, who made her Bollywood debut with Veer, said.

This little role would lead to an image makeover after showing a traditional Indian look in Veer, maintains Zarine.“I also found it quite exciting specially after Veer because there I had a totally Indianised look, totally covered and after that it is like total 360 degree makeover, a very glamorous avatar,” said Zarine adding: “We shot for it for three days in a club in Bangkok. I’m really waiting for the people’s reaction about this song.”

Her formal training in dance came in handy for the song. “I have learnt different dance forms like Bharatnatyam and belly dancing. The latter really helped me to get the moves in this club song easily,” said the 26-year-old. Asked if she has signed any other project, she said: “There are two projects in the pipeline, which I am going to sign very soon, but I don’t want to talk about them, till I sign them.” —IANS

In the league of king khan Sonam Kapoor

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was named the worst actor and Sonam Kapoor the worst actress at the third annual Golden Kela Awards on Saturday night, a spin-off of Hollywood’s Razzies awards, which recognises the worst in cinema.

While Shah Rukh won the award for Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan, where he played a patient of Asperger’s syndrome, Sonam got the award for her home production Aisha.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali won the worst director award for Guzaarish. Guzaarish also got the Black Award for Emotional Blackmail.Director Ram Gopal Varma was awarded the Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya Award (Please Stop Its Enough), asking him to stop making films.

The worst supporting actor male went to Arjun Rampal for Housefull, and worst supporting actor female went to Kangana Ranaut for Kites. Interestingly, out of five nominations in the category of supporting actress, three were for Kangana in No Problem, Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai and Kites.

Bawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke award (Have You Gone Nuts) was given to actor Ben Kingsley for his participation in the film Teen Patti. However, there was a special category of Anti-Kela awards for the films that were the saving graces of 2010. The awards were for the films that were meaningful and entertaining, while still being in the mainstream.

Those awarded in this category were Udaan, Ishqiya, Love, Sex and Dhoka, Do Dooni Chaar, Peepli Live and Tere Bin Laden.“I think we should learn to make fun of our own work and I think it’s just fun although it’s tough because we make a lot of bad films. It will be easy to choose good films but it will be difficult to choose worst work,” said Vishal Bhardwaj, producer of Ishqiya, who was present at the award ceremony hosted by Cyrus Broacha in Rockdome at the Ambience Mall in Gurgaon.

Ishqiya director Abhisek Chaubey added: “Nobody wants to admit that they have made the worst film and coming here would be admitting it, nobody really wants to believe that they did something worst. But really hope people who are nominated see the lighter side of it and come here.” — IANS

Renee never dreamt big

Dream life Renee Zellweger

Oscar-winning actor Renee Zellweger, who started her career out small, said she had never imagined the skyrocketing Hollywood career that lay ahead of her.The 41-year-old actor, who was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame at a recent awards ceremony hosted by the Austin Film Society, said that she did not plan on making it big in movies.

“I have never had those thoughts before. I moved to LA because I just ran out of things to do. If Austin Studios had been here at the time, I might not have gone anywhere,” said Zellweger.

The Chicago star, who was born and raised in Katy, Texas and attended the University of Texas in Austin alongwith Matthew McConaughey - was part of Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused cast early in her career.

“I felt really lucky to be a glorified extra on (dazed and confused). I learned so much about how a film set works and how it breaks down into different departments and what your responsibilities are as a performer when you are participating in a collaborative effort,” Zellweger said. — PTI

Johnny’s weird childhood

Hollywood star Johnny Depp felt like a freak when he was growing up and considered himself 'weird' when he was just five years old. The Pirates of the Caribbean star used to shut himself away when he was younger because he never felt like he fitted in.

"When I was growing up I felt a complete freak. Very strange. I felt weird at five. At the age of 12 it was me against the world."I remember locking myself in my bedroom and playing my guitar. It seemed like I was in there for two or three years," said Depp.

However, the 47-year-old actor has learned to accept himself since finding love with French singer-and-actor Vanessa Paradis 12 years ago. "The most important thing is that Vanessa has made me not have to pretend any more about who I am. I feel comfortable with myself. My life is divided in two. In the time before I met Vanessa, I was searching for something."She keeps me calm. There were times when I was burning inside," he said. — PTI

Confessions of Isla

Hollywood actor Isla Fisher said her husband, funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen, encouraged her to audition for comic roles because she always makes people laugh. The Confessions of a Shopaholic star, who shot to fame in Australian TV drama series Home and Away, insisted she has always made her friends laugh but only thought of it as a direction for her career when her spouse encouraged her to try for comedies.

“I’ve always been the clown with my friends, but it was Sacha who said, “You’re the funniest girl.’ He said not many women are willing to make a fool of themselves, so he pushed me in that direction and then my first audition was Wedding Crashers and that was it,” said Fisher.

She is very choosy about the roles she takes on and is happy not to be a workaholic. “Am I a workaholic? I’m exactly the opposite. I’m pretty choosy about what I do, which probably comes from years of having no choices,” she said. — PTI

For your eyes only!
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

The winter sun is giving way. Soon it’s going to be hot and with the sun glaring down ferociously on all and sundry it’s time to flaunt the latest shades.Though eyewear finds plenty of pop this season with influences from the 50s to 80s, there’s a modern edge to those old styles making it chic and fit for the style conscious. While certain styles suit particular facial features, this season it’s the bold square frames, round shapes, creamy neutrals and pearly finishes, cat-eye styles, metal frames, rimless and semi-rimless looks and rebellious blacks that would be considered in.

“Designer glasses will continue to be the favourites in 2011. The biggest designer trend for this year would be tinted lenses,” says Parul Duggal, boutique manager, Mont Blanc at Hotel Taj in Sector 17. “Other than that brown and black would rule the roost, so will the aviators for both men and women,” she adds.

Talking of tints, the brand Roberto Cavalli has come up with colourful lenses that could match the attire and accessories for 2011. “And for people who like designer sunglasses Fendi, Ralph Lauren, and Dolce & Gabbana will be a big hit,” says an employee from Weldon in Sector 17. These glasses are offered with a stunning wrap around framework.

Talking of brands how can one forget Ray Ban. Considered to be a hit in all seasons, the sunglasses come with vivid, bold coloured frames and incredibly unique designs. With paisley, striped, polka dotted, leopard print and tortoise frame styles amongst others, these glasses definitely make a style statement.

All in all the eyewear trend this season offers daring, bold details and bright, vivid colours. Oversized sunglasses will still be a rage so will be the clip on and framed styles.

Eye spy

l  Those in the eyewear business say as long as there’s symmetry to the face, you can wear almost any style.

l  While protecting the eyes from sun rays is a legitimate reason, many youngsters, and even the not-so-young, admit that sometimes it is the fashion element that pushes them to invest in a costly pair of sunglasses.

l  Earlier sunglasses served a special purpose and it wasn’t to block the rays of the sun. For centuries, Chinese judges wore smoke-coloured quartz lenses to conceal their eye expressions in court.

l  It wasn’t until the early 20th century that modern-type sunglasses came into being. In 1929, Sam Foster, founder of the Foster Grant company sold the first pair of Foster Grant sunglasses on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ.

The game of golf allows one to keep improving with each day spent on the course. As we go through this series of articles, I would like to go through different tips on the technique as well as drills to help improve your game and allow you to play to the best of your ability. Positive changes can be made in the following areas:

Technique of the swing: This applies to the long game. If the fundamentals are in place we can make a repeatable swing, which we can trust on the course. It is important to note that we do not necessarily have to strive for a perfect swing but one with a repeatable ball flight that could be a fade or a draw.

SKILLS: Short game and putting are really the skills in which if you have to have the basic technique right and also practice with the right attitude.

Varied practice is essential so as to visualise a shot and get it right the first time.

Fitness and biomechanics: Flexibility, endurance, speed and strength are the four cornerstones of fitness. Biomechanics involve the movements and coordination of the muscles needed in a swing.

Club fitting: The correct set of clubs matched with the way you swing as well as your height are necessary to allow you to swing without compensations.

Psychology: The right mind set and attitude in pressure situations. To remain focused and in control, to maintain your routine and to be able to take your trained and practiced swing as well as skills to the course successfully.

So sit back and think on how you could improve your golf by a little work on any of the above zones.

HEART talk Parvesh Rana

I am in love with a married man who is not ready to leave his family. The thought of going away from him kills me, but at the same time I don’t want to spoil the equilibrium of his family. What should I do?Talk it out with the man you love. It is important to know whether he values you enough to keep you in his life. If he has already decided on not walking out of his family, I doubt he ever will. There is no point in putting yourself in this mess. Talk about things, and see things practically in the longer run.

I had a one-night stand with a girl, who now blames me for the whole situation. She wants me to take responsibility for it and give her some kind of commitment. I feel stuck, is there any way out of handling this guilt?

There shouldn’t be any guilt as a matter of fact. After all, the entire thing happened with the agreement of both of you. She cannot blame you for this. If she still insists, explain the meaning of one nightstand to her and please don’t get into the guilt trap ever.
