Dehradun, March 13
With Holi just a few days away, a variety of colours, pichkaris and other festive goodies can be seen in the city markets. However, the invasion of Chinese goods has given a trendier look to the traditional festival of colours. A large number of toys for the festival are available in the market.

"The Chinese pichkaris are preferred over Indian as they are economical and latest in technology. We have some special variety of hydraulic pichkaris that are attractive and comparatively cheaper than others. These hydraulic pichkaris are available in the shapes of teddy bears, dinosaurs, fish and other figures. They are huge and can be filled with almost 6 litres of water,” said Shiv Kumar, a pichkari seller.

“With colours and balloons, we have even got tanker pichkaris and mini-water capsules that are the latest and hot favourite of toddlers,” added Kumar.

“The bright-coloured gulal is in demand in the city markets. Apart from kids, grown-ups also purchase pichkaris and balloons,” said Radhey Sharma, shop owner at the Paltan Bazar.

“The cheap chemical-based colours are harmful to the skin and can cause irritation and rashes. To avoid the after effects of non-herbal colours, one has to apply an ample amount of coconut oil before playing with them. The herbal colours are safe on the skin and made from organic material such as turmeric, henna, flower extract and leaves,” said Sheetal, a beautician at the VLCC.

Haridwar, March 13
A young married couple was found dead in a room of a lodging house where they were staying for the past two days. Initial probe and circumstantial evidence showed it to be a case of suicide as some poisonous liquid was found from the room with finger prints of the couple on the bottle.

As per the manager of Umesh Lodge, the married couple, aged in their early 30s and named Sachin Kumar and Radhika, were residents of Madhya Pradesh. They had booked the room on March 11, but their movement, behaviour and actions were quite suspicious.

Last night, room attendants reported that the door was locked. Consequently, when they opened the door with a master key, they found them both lying unconscious with the whole room in a bad condition.

At once the police was informed and an ambulance called as both were alive when the police arrived. They were rushed to the district hospital.

But after one and half hour the duo succumbed owing to large intake of the poisonous liquid.

Informing about the proceedings, Superintendent of Police, City, KL Shaw said the case was of suicidal attempt. An inquiry on the address credentials of the deceased was on. Dr Shaw said the hotel lodge owners should give the room to customers only after verifying their address proof with a photocopy submission. It was not being followed by many such establishment owners, he added.

Nainital diary
Nainital may revive porter system of British era
Rajeev Khanna
Tribune News Service

The town of Nainital may soon see the revival of the tried and tested porter system of the British era. Under the old system, a person on his arrival at the Lake City just had to give the address of the hotel or any other destination where he wanted his luggage delivered to a porter bearing a proper token number.

He just had to remember the token number of the porter to whom he was handing over his luggage. The rest everything was left to the porter who efficiently and honestly used to deliver the goods at the destination. This system had its roots in the concept of honesty and faith.

An effort is being made once again to revive the old system. The local municipality has drawn a road map for its implementation and started getting the verification of porters in the town done by the police authorities. Most of these people are of Nepalese origin. If implemented, this will provide a great relief to the tourists who come from the plains and are not even used to walking. Carrying their luggage proves to be a Herculean task for them.

According to information, it was from February 17, 1920, that the process of verification of porters and issuance of tokens to them had started. The tokens were renewed every year. This system continued till the 1980s, but it started fading slowly. Even till 2003, the number of tokens that had been given to the porters stood at a healthy 200. The system came to an end in 2004 following audit objections and the failure of the porters to furnish proper verification documents.

The residents of the town feel that if the system, which is based on honesty and faith, can be implemented again, Nainital will have a very positive message to give to other cities and towns.

Tigress Rani returns

One year after its demise, Rani has been brought back to life. She retains her physical appearance even as her soul is not there. Rani was the female snow leopard that had died at the Nainital zoo last year because of natural causes. So popular was she with the authorities concerned as well as the locals that the zoo authorities did not want to let her go and just wanted to retain her on the premises of the zoo.

It was decided to take the help of taxidermy experts and the carcass of Rani was eventually sent to Mumbai for taxidermy treatment.

The exercise took almost one year with the people associated with the zoo as well as those who were fond of the animal keeping a watch for any news about the developments. It was just about 10 days ago that Rani arrived, neatly stuffed. She was proudly displayed before mediapersons by the zoo authorities and once again made headlines the next day. The zoo authorities are now trying to find a prominent place where she can be installed for visitors to view her. Rani’s mate Dev had died a year prior to her death. The couple had been brought to Nainital from West Bengal.

Rein in eunuchs, say residents

The local administration in Nainital has a peculiar problem at hands. Residents of different areas have been complaining about being harassed by eunuchs and demanding protection against this harassment. Recently, some residents of Nainital and then from Bhawali had approached District Magistrate Shailesh Bagauli with the problem. He had promised them to look into the matter and even asked them to contact his office whenever they were harassed by eunuchs. People have been complaining that the eunuchs come to their houses after the birth of children or after marriages, besides other festivals and occasions and start demanding huge amounts as shagun. The demand can vary from Rs 5,000 to as high as Rs 51,000. When the people express their inability to give such heavy amounts, they resort to indecent and obscene behaviour. This news was prominently carried by a local paper, which saw the arrival of eunuchs at its office the next day. They argued with the reporters for carrying the report and the matter was resolved somehow. Now, it is the residents of the Malli Bamauri locality of Haldwani who have approached the administration on this issue. They have handed over to the authorities concerned a memorandum addressed to the District Magistrate seeking his intervention in the matter.

Limelight-hungry Nishank ‘aide’

A political appointee to the Forest and Environment Protection Committee, Anil Ballooni, who is said to be close to Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Agriculture Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, has emerged as one of the most unpopular figures among mediapersons working with vernacular papers across the region.

The reason for his being unpopular is that this political appointee is in the habit of dropping names and always seen telling reporters that he is on very close terms with their editors, thus trying to convey indirectly that he must be given proper coverage at every event. The mediapersons say the man is too full of himself.

Recently, when a team of journalists visiting the Jim Corbett National Park saw a barking deer, which did not budge from its place even as the vehicle carrying the journalists came very close to it, they could not help commenting, “This deer should be named after the gentleman. He seems to be so bent on getting himself in the media limelight”.

No stopping jokes on BJP Govt

The Holi season is on and there is no stopping political jokes with the state Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank at their core. The latest being circulated is from an organisation of the educated and unemployed youth that has been agitating across the region against the Nishank-led state government. It tries to make fun of the entire Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership in the state. The joke goes like this:

Film - Loot lo Uttarakhand. Hero - Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. Heroine - Beena Maharana. Villains - Prakash Pant and Matbar Singh Kandari. Script by Madan Kaushik. Guest appearance - Bhagat Singh Koshiyari. Supporting actor - BC Khanduri. Choreography - Trivendra Singh Rawat and Asha Nautiyal. Action - Surendra Jeena and Arvind Pandey. Music - Vijaya Barthwal. Produced by the Uttarakhand’s Poor Shikshit Corporation Limited and Berozgar Sangathan.

Rajpur slums get MC cold shoulder

Dehradun, March 13
Rajpur, one of the posh and happening wards of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation where all the biggies of the city prefer to live, is facing acute civic problems. The area, which is situated in the heart of the city, was once a part of the forest cover, but now it has developed as an elite area of the capital city.

It is one of the most visited places as the Sai Baba temple, Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) Park, Buddhist Monastery and a few private institutes are located here.

The area is divided into two parts, a posh area and a slum area. The residents who live in the posh area are a happy lot as the corporation takes good care of it, but those living in the other part face a lot of problems.

The area comprises nine slums, including Thani village, Sapera Basti, Chanderlok Basti, Kath Bangla, Ghastly Mandi, Aabka Basti and Dugal village, which are legally developed. “I have asked the Municipal Corporation to lay a road in our locality, but the officials concerned have termed the development of the area as illegal, thus no roads are being laid here,” Nisha Rana, Congress councillor of the ward, said, adding, “an application has been sent to the corporation through the local MLA, but nothing has happened yet.

“The work to lay roads in the area has been left midway, due to which residents are inconvenienced a lot,” she said.

About Rs 27 lakh has been spent on the laying of the roads till now but the work is still incomplete, as the corporation is not ready to listen to us.

Ruby Devi said: “We have been requesting the MC for the construction of the road for eight or nine years, but to no avail. To prevent the incidents of elderly people and children slipping, we have now put up empty bags on the stretch to make a temporary ‘road’. It gets very difficult for us to tread on the road to fetch water”.

Praising BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi, Rajni Singh, who is from the same party and had lost in the municipal council polls, said Joshi had done a lot of work in the area but had failed to provide streetlights in the slums. “People come to me with their complaints and I myself call the related department and ask the officials to solve the problem”.

Joshi said he had done his best to develop the area. “I have got a community centre constructed in the area. The roads have been recarpeted in many areas and the work is still in progress. I have spent more than Rs 15 lakh on reshaping the local infrastructure,” he said, asking “how can anyone complete a task of 40 years in just four years? If people still feel that I have done nothing for them then what can I say?” Joshi signed off.
