Region sits on high-risk seismic zone

The city and its surrounding areas, which fall in the seismic zone IV indicating high susceptibility to earthquakes, also have dangerous “active” fault lines beneath the region. Seismologists classify these fault lines as a product of strain released from within the Earth that eventually lead to tremors on its surface.

Covering an extra mile against corruption

For participants of the second Chandigarh Marathon it was a “funday”, as they enjoyed immensely participating in the marathon at the Rock Garden here today. Under the pleasant climate and loud music, number of participants from across the country participated in the marathon for “Run for the spirit of city and to take stand against corruption.”

Renewal of liquor licences
‘UT losing crores every year’
Chandigarh, January 13
At a time when the UT excise policy for the next fiscal year is round the corner, its major feature, renewal of licences to existing licensees, is being questioned. By adopting the renewal mode for most already existing licensees by the authorities, the exchequer has reportedly been incurring a loss of crores every year, local resident Sanjay Aggarwal has alleged in a representation to the UT administration.

Call it the apathy of the postal department authorities or official red tape, the 200-odd postmen in the city have lost their inimitable identity - the khaki - with no uniforms being issued to them for the past three years.

In a first of its kind study in the world carried out by the Endocrinology and Community Medicine departments of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, in co-ordination with department of biophysics, Panjab University, has revealed that deficiency of iron also leads to goitre, a disease which leads to the enlargement of thyroid gland, leaving the patient with a swollen neck.

Emphasis on laparoscopic surgery

The department of obstetrics and gynaecology, PGI, organised a one-day workshop on various types of hysterectomies. Removal of uterus, which is the second most common gyane surgery, can be performed abdominally, vaginally or with laparoscopic assistance. Vaginal route is now the most preferred approach both by surgeons and patients.

Urban complex to come up in Barwala block
Panchkula, March 13
The face of Panchkula district is set to change with a new urban complex set to come up at Jalauli and Mouli villages in the Barwala block. Spread over 8,000 acres, the Barwala Urban Complex will include residential, commercial, industrial and institutional plots.

Arterial Road
3.5-km stretch to be widened
Mohali, March 13
One of the busiest 3.5-km-long sections of the arterial road passing through Phases IV, V, III-B1, III-B2 and VII of Mohali will be widened. After conducting a survey of the underground services, the engineering department and the town planning department of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) have given their go-ahead to carving out of a dual carriageway.

Gossip preoccupies city cops
Traffic in the city is regulated by a sizable number of cops. Quite often they are seen gossiping in a corner while vehicles are stuck in traffic jams at roundabouts. On Friday, their apathy was laid bare when some youths entered into an altercation with the CTU staff resulting in a traffic jam on the road in front of the PGI. The jam left commuters stranded for an hour.

Construction cost mounts as work gets delayed

The delay in the construction of a multipurpose sports stadium at Paploha village, near here, has not only left sports enthusiasts high and dry but also doubled the project cost. The Haryana State Agriculture Marketing Board, Panchkula, had undertaken the construction of the stadium at the village five years ago.

300 students given degrees
Patiala, March 13
The annual convocation of Sri Guru Harkrishan Group of Colleges was held at the Central State Library Hall here today. As many as 300 students from different streams, including MBA, MCA, BBA and BCA, were awarded degrees by Lieut-Governor of Puducherry Dr Iqbal Singh.

NGO offers to assist police

The Sadak Suraksha Mission, an NGO, has offered its services to the Zirakpur police for providing assistance to road accident victims. A meeting of the mission was held recently at Dhakoli in which the members decided to meet police officials to provide help in regulating traffic and ensuring prompt medical help to road accident victims.

Accident victim dies
Lalru, March 13
A woman who was injured in a road accident, near Lalru, two days ago, died at the GMCH, Chandigarh, today. The victim has been identified as Shanti Devi, a resident of Jandli, near here. The woman was injured after a car knocked her down while she was crossing the national highway.

Four hurt as cars collide
Dera Bassi, March 13
Four persons, including two children, were injured in a road accident near here today. The accident occurred when two cars, a Zen and a Santro, collided near the railway bridge on the national highway.

Girl commits suicide
Ambala, March 13
Seema Rani (18), a student of BCom I of MPN College, Mullana, was found dead on the railway tracks at Saharanpur yesterday. She is believed to have committed suicide as the police has recovered a suicide note from her purse.

Cyclist killed in mishap
Bassi Pathana, March 13
A cyclist was killed in an accident on the Bassi Pathana-Chandigarh road here. The victim was knocked down by a speeding private bus. According to Rajwant Singh, police post in-charge, Jupinder Singh, a resident of local Singhpura Mohalla, was going to his house when a private bus sideswiped his bicycle.

Immigration co told to refund Rs 1.5 lakh
Chandigarh, March 13
The UT District Consumer Forum has directed an Immigration Company Rimwea Carrier Forum to refund Rs 1.5 lakh to a Ludhiana resident and also pay her a compensation of Rs  20,000 for causing her mental agony, pain, harassment and financial loss, besides cost of litigation of Rs 5,000.

PGI MURDER CASE
Prime accused, 4 others held
Chandigarh, March 13
A day after the brazen attack on an 18-year-old youth in the PGI, the police has booked nine persons for the murder and arrested five of them. Enmity over the issue of a girl was the reason behind the murder, the police said. Kanhaiya Lal, son of a safai karamchari, was battered to death by the accused on the PGI premises yesterday.

Eight nabbed in cases of snatching

The UT police have arrested eight persons, including a minor, who allegedly snatched mobile phones and cash from city residents in separate incidents over the past few days.

In a daring incident, two unidentified persons robbed Tarun, a resident of Sector 11, of his Swift Dzire car and a mobile phone at gunpoint at the Sector 4-11 roundabout around 8.45 pm today.

One held for illegal mining
Panchkula, March 13
The police has arrested a person for carrying out illegal mining of sand at a river here. The accused has been identified as Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Batoud village, near Barwala block. He was produced before the duty magistrate today, which remanded him in judicial custody.

Woman sets herself afire
Mohali, March 13
A 35-year-old woman, Lalita, allegedly attempted suicide by setting herself afire at her Sector-66 residence late last night. Victim’s husband Bhupinder Singh and her 12-year-old daughter were asleep when she doused herself with kerosene and set herself afire.

1st Shooting World Cup
38 shooters to compete
Chandigarh, March 13
A total of 38 ace national-level shooters will compete to book a berth for Indian shooting team in the London Olympics to be held in 2012 at the first Shooting World Cup in Sydney from March 21 to 30. The winners of these games will decide the number of participants representing the country in the London Olympics.
