BMC Chowk flyover may get completed by April end
Jalandhar, March 1 While the foundation stone of the project had been laid down by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal on May 25 last year, the trust authorities today claimed that they expected it to be over by April end. The work of the approach coming from the Narinder Cinema side seems to be almost over with just the bitumen-laying part left. The other two approaches - from in front of Hotel Radisson and Apeejay School side - are also on the verge of completion. The span of the part of flyover connecting the approach from Hotel Radisson side to Narinder Cinema side is also over. The part that now remains is the connectivity of the span portion with the approach coming from the Apeejay School side. This side of the approach, which was one-way in the old plan, was later made two-way. The work on this side has been going relatively slow as it is being done manually. “Cranes cannot be used on this side owing to high-tension wires passing overhead. We have deputed an extra manpower as of now to expedite the work,” said Jalandhar Improvement Trust Chairman Baljit Singh Neelamahal. He claimed that 75 per cent of the work had already got completed. “We had plans to open the flyover by Baisakhi. Since we are getting the rest of the work done manually in the rest of the portion, we may not be able to complete it by that time,” he added, claiming that the work at the site had been executed even the night through. Quite fortunately, the residents did not have to face much traffic problems during the ongoing work as the motorists have been using alternate ways and service lanes alongside the construction site. In fact, all the six roads that meet at the chowk have inner roads, which the residents have been using all this while. “There, of course, have been a few days when the area around the chowk has remained badly choked but the problem has not been as much as the residents had expected”, claimed a bank employee working in the area. |
Spring Sorrow
Jalandhar, March 1 While there have been tall claims from the officials for investing crores of rupees to make the city look beautiful, they failed to sanction a few thousands of rupees for the procurement of the saplings. Besides, the horticulture staff at the MC’s own nursery near Burlton Park failed to generate the seasonal plants for the purpose. The morning walkers and children do not get to enjoy the pleasant sight of blooming flowers and colourful beds of pansies, marigolds, candytufts, dahlias, poppies, dog flowers and salvias in the parks in this “queen of seasons”. For the same reason, the MC officials may not even hold a flower show this time. “There are no flowers which we can showcase from our own side this time,” said an official on the condition of anonymity. “All that we have is a few variety of rose flowers at Burlton Park,” he added. The Horticulture Department of the MC, in fact, has got under-staffed over the past few years. “There are just 80 gardeners as of now, while there were 260 employees on the post till the last decade. On the contrary, the city has stretched along all sides by 3 km,” insiders revealed. Besides, all top posts in the department, including those of SE and Executive Engineers are held by officials from the B&R Section, which in stark contrast deals with the concrete structures, rather than believing in natural beauty. Commissioner Viney Bublani, however, when contacted, claimed that the upkeep of the parks was being done by the welfare societies themselves. “We have not held the flower show at Nehru Garden because it lies dug up. No heed was paid to sow seeds of flowering plants at Burlton Park for it has to be dug up anytime now,” he pointed out. He added that the societies had hired gardeners from their own side for the maintenance of parks. “We are paying Rs 1,000 per person from our side for such employees,” he claimed. |
A feast for lovers of haute couture
Jalandhar, March 1 Dhaka, who has won the heart of critics worldwide for her creative designs, is referred to as the Gautlier of the east. She has people like Naomi Campbell, Martha Marzollo, Uma Thurman, Tara Palmer Tomlinson and Vittorio Radice on her client list. Attired in a loose, collared shirt, denim trousers and leather boots, Dhaka joked that she had been dressed in the very same clothes for the past two days. “My luggage got lost in Amritsar, but thankfully I found it today.” Her first show in the city, her decision to showcase her collection in Jalandhar and Amritsar - which hardly figure on the list of big Indian designers - had everyone curious. So, what has brought her to Punjab? “Punjab has always been close to my heart. I was born in Amritsar. My mother went to school and college in the holy city. I had wanted to visit the Golden Temple and it was a lovely experience. Talking of their sense of style, I think the tastes of the people in the state are changing. The girls now prefer jeans over salwar kameez. They are vibrant and fashion conscious and have a huge influence on the fashion scene. Most of my clients come from Ludhiana. So, it is an important trip for me,” the designer said. Does she plan an outlet in Jalandhar too? “Maybe. One of my clients, who is also a friend, is planning a mall in Jalandhar. Ideas are being floated for my store at the mall. Though nothing is decided as yet,” she said. Dhaka, who has had Bollywood divas like Lara Dutta, Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma walking the ramp for her, has earlier known to have said as far as fashion sense is concerned, Bollywood is confused. Does she still think so? “Yes, in the sense that they largely depend on stylists. The style of the 70s was way more defined and robust,” she said. What is special about the collection she showcases here? “What I showcase today is mostly evening cocktail dresses. Again, it has a lot of influence of the 70s’ style. Since I was doing it for a club and I think Punjab is keen on western wear anyways, I chose this,” said the designer. To the question what she thinks is going to rule the ramp this year, she said lots of stripes, dots and mix ‘n’ match. |
MC’s move to sell Mayor, Commissioner’s houses in Model town
Jalandhar, March 1 Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) secretary Abhay Singh and several senior residents of Model Town, including Atam Prakash Bablu, Davinder Pal Singh Sodhi, Kuldeep Kaushal, Davinder Singh and Avtar Singh, stated that if the MC did not withdraw its move to sell the Mayor’s house and adjoining land reportedly for commercial purposes, they would be left with no option, but to start a hunger strike. This is pertinent to mention here that the MC has already passed a resolution to sell to the Punjab Municipal Infrastructural Development Company (PMIDC) 71 kanal and 13 marla land in Model Town where the Mayor and Commissioner’s houses are located. Another resolution regarding the transfer of 120 kanal and 19 marla land of the Company Bagh to the PMIDC was also passed by the MC during the meeting of the house in January. The resolutions have been sent to the Local Bodies Department for approval. The PPCC secretary said they would first meet the authorities concerned to convince them of withdrawing their move of selling the Mayor’s house and the adjoining land to the PMIDC reportedly for commercial purpose. If the move was not withdrawn, they would also file a case in the competent court in this regard, besides starting a hunger strike to mobilise general public. Abhay Singh and other senior Model Town residents said the land was earlier meant for parks only, but now it housed the official accommodation of MC officials, besides some green area and a hospital, which had been closed down. If the land was used for commercial purposes, it would affect the environment adversely, he added. The PPCC secretary said if the MC did not want to run its hospital, the land should be handed over to residents to run the hospital for charitable purposes. Senior residents Davinder Pal Singh Sodhi, Kuldeep Kaushal, Davinder Singh and Avtar Singh stated that they, led by Iqbal Singh, now Puduchurry Lieut-Governor, had earlier also resorted to agitation in 70s when there was plan to construct flats on the land meant for parks. Following the agitation, the then Chief Minister Giani Zail Singh intervened and now Nikku Park was located on that land, they added. |

Liver cirrhosis not limited to alcoholics: Expert
Jalandhar, March 1 “Besides, debilitating diseases like diabetes, the urbanite sedentary lifestyle and food habits have led to the increase in hepato-billiary complications even in those who are teetotalers. The prevalence of cirrhosis among the latter is approximately 15-20 per cent of the total cirrhosis patients, who underwent liver transplantation,” he pointed out. Hepatitis B and C are the other known causes of the disease, said Dr Soin. Moreover, more worrisome is the fact that the young individuals of age group between 35-40 years constitute a major share in the whole lot of patients suffering from non-alcoholic liver disease, he added. He said as no data was available in the country to ascertain the approximate figures of patients suffering from liver cirrhosis, such calculations are largely based on the routine transplants conducted in big hospitals. Besides total 28 hospitals doing liver transplants, there are only six big hospitals in the country, which were regularly doing liver transplants, he added. |
