CBSE Exams Begin
Physics paper tough: Students
Charu Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 1
Thousands of CBSE class XII students sat for their physics paper as the board exams began today across the country. A large number of students complained that the paper was difficult and lengthy.

Anuj Srivastava, a class XII student from Ahlcon Public School, said, "The physics paper was definitely not easy. I was well prepared even then I missed the last two questions as the paper was very lengthy. I think my extensive preparation has gone waste as I will certainly miss out on marks for the questions I have missed."

Sarita Kapoor, a physics teacher with a South Delhi MCD school, said, "I would not describe the paper as tough though my students have been complaining about it. The paper was set from within the course and there were a few tricky questions that the students have found challenging. However, there were an equal number of easy questions that most students should have been able to manage. It was a balanced paper. The competent students will do well and the not-so-competent will grumble."

Nishi Chadha, a class XII student from Bluebells School, said, "The paper was too long and as a result I had no time to do revision. I had prepared hard for the paper and could deal with most questions, including the tricky questions but as the paper was so long I had no time to revise. I did not find the paper difficult, but it was not easy either."

Another student, Manish Talwar, from a South Delhi MCD school, said, "The paper was very tough. I did not know many questions despite preparing hard. A lot of questions were tricky and needed careful thinking. Also, the paper was too long and this was definitely a tough beginning to the boards. I am just not confident about my performance in this paper."

On the other hand, Latika, from Mothers International, said, "The physics paper was not tough. All the questions were set from the course. I was able to tackle them to my satisfaction. At least I should have no problem with this paper though some students are complaining. I hope the other papers turn out like this one."

MCD to rein in parking mafia
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 1
Planning to crack the whip, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) today said it will seek the help of Delhi police in tackling the parking mafia and lodge FIRs in cases of running of illegal parking sites and charging of more than the approved rates.

Chairman of Standing Committee Yogender Chandolia said he has already met the city police commissioner and sought his help in better parking management and curbing the menace of certain unscrupulous parking contractors.

The MCD is working to check unauthorised parking sites with the help of Delhi Traffic Police, he said in the meeting of the Standing Committee of the corporation.

"As a result where there were 116 authorised parking sites till December-end, today we have no-objection certificates (NoCs) for more sites, taking the total to 295," he said.

He said the MCD will register FIRs whenever it gets complaints of running of illegal parking sites and charging of more than the approved rates.

"It has come to MCD's notice that some contractors are fleecing the public by charging more than the approved rates. They are also parking more than the permissible number of vehicles by occupying more than the authorised area," he said.

"The MCD will hand over cases of violation to the police and seek the help of Crime Branch to unearth the nexus of parking contractors. It is expected that such hard steps will enable the MCD to earn more revenue as well as stop public harassment," Chandolia said.

He said the effort of the MCD is to see that illegal parking sites are either removed or converted into regular parking sites.

"We are in the process of identifying more parking sites. Municipal councillors and zonal deputy commissioners have been requested to identify potential sites within the area of their jurisdiction. The MCD will take up the matter with the traffic police for giving NoCs," he said.

It appeared that a parking mafia is active in some parking sites, he said and warned the contractors that violation of terms and conditions will lead to cancellation of their contracts. Illegal parking sites have resulted in big revenue losses to the MCD which is already going through a financial crisis.

The remunerative project cell of the MCD had earlier compiled a list of such illegal parking sites and decided to take steps to convert them into legal ones.

About 900 vehicles are added to Delhi roads every day and parking space has turned out to be a serious problem for citizens.

57 tumours removed from Nigerian’s uterus
Ananya Panda
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 1
Fifty-year-old Nigerian Florence and her family cannot help thanking the doctors of a private hospital in the national Capital as she can now plan for a baby after the removal of 57 tumours from her uterus.

It wasn't a unique surgery (myomectomy), but the very fact that the entire uterus was studded with multiple fibroids and the womb had to be retained, made the surgery a skillful affair for senior consultant, IVF and infertility, Dr Archana Dhawan Bajaj, surgeon who operated Florence.

Interestingly, in African countries the fertility rate is believed to be pretty high and women look forward to planning out their families even after 40 contrary to the western and some parts of Asia where conception level is said to have diminished considerably. The reasons attributed to it are dietary pattern and environmental condition, said Dr Archana.

Florence had lost all hope of conceiving after doctors back in Nigeria told her that her uterus has to be removed (hysterectomy) as the fibroids had outgrown in size and number.

However, it was with her sister-in-law, who was undergoing in-vitro-fertilisation procedure at Delhi-based Kalra Hospital, she came to India and all tumours were removed while preserving the uterus.

"One week back the woman came to us with enlarged tumours that were detected 20 years back in Nigeria. Over the years it had increased to become a big mass and it required skill to remove the tumours without damaging the womb as the woman wanted to have baby," she said.

Even as such tumours are not fatal and with a pretty low malignancy-they should not be neglected to avoid infertility.

"In this case, the patient's condition was ignored and thus it went on to affect her fertility level. Besides, these tumours cause physical discomfort and extensive bleeding during menstrual cycle and the surgery. The surgery is a normal procedure and the tumours are quite common in the general population," Dr Archana said.

Expo centre, Gt Noida’s answer to Pragati Maidan?
Parmindar Singh

Greater Noida, March 1
India Expo Centre and Mart at Greater Noida is emerging as an alternative to Delhi's Pragati Maidan. It is claimed that the recent handicraft and gift fair has generated business worth over Rs 840 crore.

Mart owners feel that in the years to come, it will be at par with Shanghai Mart. However, some feel that distance from Delhi hotels was hindrance to business visitors.

One of the mart owners Ravi K Passi of National Centre for Design and Product Development told The Tribune, "Though Pragati Maidan's easy approachability is an advantage, traffic congestion

around it during fairs gives a nightmare to Delhi residents. At India Expo Centre here, development is at par with international mart complexes. It is an entirely air-conditioned complex."

"For a foreign buyer who comes here after covering a distance of thousands of kilometers, just 20 km is irrelevant," said Passi.

Another mart owner Rahul Dhall of H Lal International echoes similar views. He said, "In the next few years, this complex infrastructure will be at

par with Shanghai Mart. A hotel is being developed inside the complex. Distance does not matter for genuine buyer."

However, not all agree with this viewpoint and felt that Pragati Maidan is a better option.

Shafaat Ahmad Khan of Moradabad who had a stall at the fair said, "Pragati Maidan attracts more foreign buyers. At India Expo Centre, we are getting less than 40 per cent of the business which we used to get at Pragati Maidan."

He attributes the long distance and commuting problems the cause of low turnout at the centre.

Some attribute lack of accommodation as hindrance to expo centre's growth. "There are no five star hotels in the city. Shuttle bus service provided by the management is no solution. The authorities have to develop five star and three star hotels if they want to attract foreign investment," said Meenakshee Singha of Ajanta Export House.

Manju Gupta of Kumar Exports, said, "There is no airport in the twin cities which is the major factor in low turnout of foreign buyers at the centre. I fail to understand why the Jewar airport project is being held up when the state government has offered to fund the project," she asked.

"We have requested the management to hold retail fairs too at the centre where exporters could sell their export rejections or normal goods to the domestic buyers," said Passi.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 1
The Delhi police is looking for a 29-year-old former employee of Indian Airlines in connection with the murder of a 26-year-old girl, identified as Neetu Solanki. Solanki's body was found in a bag at New Delhi Railway Station on the morning of February 11. The body remained unidentified for almost two weeks until Kartar Singh, a resident of Matialas, identified the victim as his daughter who was living in with one Raju Gehlot since over a year.

According to Ashok Chand, DCP (Crime), although Gehlot is on the run, his close relative Naveen Shokeen, who was aware of the murder and had even helped Gehlot after it, had been arrested.

"Shokeen, a resident of Nangloi, is a close relative of Gehlot and the police picked him up for questioning, during which he confessed having being aware of the murder and even meeting the accused after the crime. We have booked him for providing a hideout to Gehlot at his home and charged him under sections 201 and 202 (intentionally harbouring and concealing an accused) of the Indian Penal Code," said Chand addressing the media at the police headquarters today evening.

Shokeen told the police that Gehlot, after killing Solanki with a sharp-edged weapon, had asked for his car to dispose of the body. However, he did not provide the car, after which Gehlot had hired a taxi. According to Chand, Gehlot met Shokeen on February 13 and again after five days, and had stayed with him for close to a week.

A graduate from College of Vocational Studies of Delhi University, Gehlot completed his postgraduation in tourism from the same college and later did a diploma in French Language from an institute of south Delhi. He joined Indian Airlines as a crew member in 2006 and resided in the official accommodation at Air India Colony, Vasant Vihar. According to Chand, he came into the contact of Solanki in 2009 and developed intimacy with her.

"In September, Gehlot and Solanki went to Banglore. They returned to Delhi in November 2010 and started living together in a rented accommodation in the Hari Nagar area of west Delhi. However, they did not tell their parents about the place they were living," said Chand, adding that it was not clear whether the two were married.

Solanki graduated from Delhi University and had also done LLB. After completing her studies, she joined Convergys and then IBM Daksh, Gurgaon. She remained in touch with her parents through the phone and also visited them, but never invited them to her house.

Raju hails from Navada village in Uttam Nagar.

Two water plants may close for a few days
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 1
The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is likely to shut down two major water treatment plants in the city, resulting in the shortage of water supply in many parts of Delhi.

The board has planned to curtail the supplies from two treatment plants at Wazirabad and Chandrawal for the next few days following high ammonia levels in the Yamuna river, a DJB official said.

The places that would be affected include north, central and parts of west and south Delhi till Tuesday afternoon and if the problem is still not solved, the plant might have to face a shutdown, he said.

The two plants supply 210 million gallons of water every day on an average, making up for one-third of Delhi's demand.

"The ammonia content in the Yamuna raw water is against the normal quantity of 0.6 ppm (parts per million), but we are yet to ascertain the exact level of ammonia content in the river," said the official.
