Lunthi expels eight members from Cong
Pithoragarh, February 21 “The state Congress president has permitted me to do so,” said Lunthi. However, the expelled members have challenged their expulsion. “We had asked the members to explain their stand in three weeks’ time, but they failed to reply to our show-cause notices and we had to take this action,” said Lunthi. He added that these members had worked against the basic principles of the party to empower the weaker sections of society, including women. The divide within Pithoragarh Congress surfaced today as the expelled members challenged their expulsion on the ground that the district president could not expel them as he had not given them any notice before the voting took place on January 19. “Our expulsion is technically wrong as some of us, including me, are Youth Congress members and only the Youth Congress state president can expel us from the party,” said Harish Dhami, an expelled Zila Panchayat member from the Baram area. They also challenged the validity of the present District Congress president and said he had neglected veteran Congressmen in the district. “When we, the Congressmen of the district, were fighting for the survival of the party, the present Congress president was in the Bahujan Samaj Party. He cannot teach us Congress philosophy,” said Dhami. The expelled members also said they would appeal to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi through union minister Harish Rawat to expose the District Congress president. “If to get
justice, we have to begin a sit-in before Sonia ji, we will also do so,” said Dhami. |
