Rajpura, February 14
A six-member team constituted by the Punjab Chief Minister today visited Rajpura and met farmers from seven villages whose 1,360 acres of fertile land is being acquired to set up an information and technology park and knowledge city.

The team comprised SAD general secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra,

Rajpura MLA Raj Khurana, SAD rural president Ajaib Singh Mukhmailpur, MD of Infotech Corporation Punjab Rakesh Verma, Deputy Commissioner Patiala Deepinder Singh and District Development and Panchayat officer Daljit Singh Virk.

The members interacted with sarpanches of all seven villages, besides members of the bhumi bachao sangharsh committee to resolve the issue of acquiring land.

The committee would present its report to the Chief Minister after which the price of the panchayat land would be fixed. Officials said farmers were in favour of the IT park, but they were demanding the maximum price for their land.

Though most of the land belongs to the panchayat, some farmers are fighting a battle in court to claim a few acres. Such farmers would be given compensation as per the decision of the court, said the officials.

President of kisan sangharsh committee Garib Singh said the committee, in connection with the price land, made inquiries. “I have asked them to give at least Rs 25 lakh per acre. Those who have installed electric motors in their lands have demanded more than Rs 30 lakh,” he said.

Balwinder Singh, sarpanch of Aakar village, said farmers who had been cultivating panchayat land on contract basis for several decades should get at least Rs 21 lakh.

Jeev, Gaganjeet to lead Indian challenge
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, February 14
Two-time Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Jeev Milkha Singh of Chandigarh will lead the Indian challenge, along with Kapurthala’s Gaganjeet Bhullar in the season-opening Avantha Masters, which will get underway on the DLF Golf and Country Club greens in Gurgaon on February 17.

Plagued by injuries in 2010, the Chandigarh golf icon hopes to bounce back after a dismal season. In his words, “I just want to prepare myself to be injury free in 2011.”

“2010 was a stop-and-start one and I had absolutely no momentum. Just when I thought I was getting back into the swing of things, I got injured again. It was extremely frustrating,” wrote Jeev in his blog.

Jeev said, “If I can manage to keep fit, I will be able to achieve all my ambitions. So this year becoming fit and keeping that way is definitely my priority.”

But the golfer to watch out will be 22-year-old Gaganjeet Bhullar, who has had a good start this season.

Soon after his hat-trick triumph, Bhullar said last week, “I am currently on a winning streak. There is a lot of positive energy around me and that helps me come through even in tough situations. This is the second hat-trick of titles in my career and it has given me the much-needed momentum ahead of a long and gruelling season.”

With Andrew Dodt of Australia defending the title, the Indian stars primed for the event include Rahil Gangjeet. Five-time winner of Asian Tour events in India, Jyoti Randhawa will be hoping to regain his form. Others in the fray include Shiv Kapur, who had an excellent outing at the Hero Honda Indian Open in December.
