No man-eater tigress in Corbett, claims report
Earlier blood samples belong to the same feline Jotirmay Thapliyal Tribune News Service
Dehradun, January 29 Uttarakhand Chief Wildlife Warden Srikant Chandola expressed anguish over the confusion created by the media over Thursday’s shooting down of the maneater. “It is now confirmed, both by the post-mortem examination report and the Wildlife Institute of India’s report, that the gunned down tiger was the same that was responsible for all the five human killings in Corbett,” said Srikant. He acknowledged that the pug marks did create confusion initially as this male tiger was taken to be a tigress. “It happens at times and even famous hunter like Jim Corbett could not ascertain clearly on the gender of the tiger through pug marks,” he said. He denied the usage of AK-47 for shooting down the maneater. While the post-mortem examination clearly led to recovery of human flesh from the tiger’s stomach, the January 11 bullet shot injury was also very much visible in spite of it getting healed to an extent. He said further said the WII report had also confirmed that the blood samples taken on January 11 and subsequently on January 19 confirmed that it belonged to the same tiger. The Chief Wildlife Warden pointed out that while an independent team of veterinarians conducted the post-mortem examination, the blood samples were assessed by the Wildlife Research Institute of Wildlife Institute of India. Chandola pointed out that NTCA secretary Rajesh Gopal had visited Corbett on January 13 and 14 and expressed satisfaction over the working of the Uttarakhand Wildlife staff. He agreed that the man-eater must be exterminated. |
Residents defy official claim
Dehradun, January 29 The Sundarkhal residents still apprehend the presence of the man-eater tigress. The residents have submitted a memorandum to DFO Ravindra Juyal, asking them for freeing them of the terror of the tigress. Gram pradhan Chandan Ram said the tigress was still on the prowl and he had himself come across her during the early morning hours today when his dog suddenly started barking. “Chandan came outside his house and was aghast to see the beast at a distance. He ran inside the house and raised an alarm,” president of the Sanyukt Sangarsh Samiti Munish Kumar told The Tribune over the phone. He said the villagers were still hearing the roar of the tigress during the night and feared for their lives. Another resident Kisan Ram reported sighting the tiger at around 7 in the morning. Reports from Ramnagar also revealed that the passengers in a bus sighted a striped cat on the national highway. The passengers were employees of IMPCL and were going from Mohaan to Ramnagar. Some of the villagers even brought a forester and made him see the pug marks. |
‘Insensitive’ CM’s effigy burnt
Dehradun, January 29 The villagers led by local BSP leader Kishore Lal today gathered at the Ramnagar Ranikhet road and blocked the traffic. While renting the air with anti-Nishank slogans, the villagers alleged that the government was trying to become a friend of the beasts that were mauling them mercilessly. They even accused the Chief Minister of failing to announce any compensation for the family members of the five victims. “While the Chief Minister has failed to even speak a word of condolence for those who were brutally killed by the tiger, he is now contemplating a probe into the killing of the man-eater as if he is a representative of the tigers,” they argued. Congress leader Asha Bisht, Om Prakash, Neelam Gupta, Kailash Aryawal, Kushi Ram, Param, Geeta Chauhan, Asha Bisht, Mohan Lal, Surendra Rawat and others were present on the occasion. |
Leading a solitary existence after death
Mussoorie, January 29 Local historian Gopal Bhardwaj, along with his friend, lit a candle at the grave that has remained hidden from the public glare and commemorated 160 years of her death Bhardwaj says, according to the British Army record this solitary grave belongs to Caroline Moore, wife of George Fredrick Moore, who was commissioned as an ensign on October 25,1839, in 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment. He elaborates that Caroline died on January 29, 1851, under mysterious circumstances. Caroline was the wife of George Fredrick Moore who was commissioned as an ensign on October 25, 1839, in 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment. George Moore became a Lieutenant on November 9,1841, and was raised to the rank of Captain in 1847. However, he did not serve in the First Sikh War, but did serve in the Second Sikh War, also called “War of Sobraon”, now in Ludhiana district in Punjab. Moore was severely wounded in the thigh on November 4, 1848, during the siege of Multan and was awarded the Punjab Campaign medal. According to Gopal Bhardwaj, presumably this wound forced him to retire to the serene surroundings of the hill town of Mussoorie to recover from his injuries. He stayed in India till 1857 and did not take part in the Mutiny of 1857. Moore’s young wife Caroline also accompanied him to Mussoorie, but died under mysterious circumstances on January 29, 1851. Bhardwaj opines that Caroline may have died due to either some chronic disease such as tuberculosis or must have committed suicide. This could be one of the reasons that she was not buried at the cemetery that exists only 1 km away from her solitary grave. Her death is also not recorded in the church register to this day. In those days, persons committing suicide were buried in solitary graves. Caroline died at the young age of 20 and her husband Captain Moore went on to become Staff Officer on August 1, 1855, and left the 10th Regiment in India around this time. Bhardwaj further says that it seems that the couple resided at Dahlia Bank Cottage, the same house which has been rumoured to be owned by famous Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. George Moore became Major in 1858 and later was also appointed Staff Officer of pensions at Tullamore in Ireland. Not much is known about Caroline except that she died and remained devoted to her husband till the end. Bhardwaj, who has been visiting the grave and lighting the candle for the past 10 years as a mark of sympathy, said, “I was curious about the grave as she did not get a proper burial and I feel sorry for her lady. It was this curiosity that led to further investigation about her”. Bhardwaj laments the fact that graves around Mussoorie are full of history, but no one seemed to be interested in preserving the treasure of the British Raj for future generations. Bhardwaj through his own efforts has now amassed a huge amount of historic literature and documents and is working on a book that will come out within a couple of years. |
