Fatehgarh Sahib, January 28
Residents of Brahmanmajra, near Sirhind, are opposing permanent closure of level crossing after the construction of a flyover on the railway tracks.

A flyover is under construction for the past two years and is yet to be completed. The area residents fear that the level crossings would be closed once the flyover is complete.

A railway line is passing through Brahmanmajra locality, wherein around 5,000 people are residing. The area residents, opposing permanent closure of the level crossings, said it would make the life of people more difficult.

“We will have to take a longer route to reach the other side of the city in view of permanent closure of level crossings. There is a market and schools on one side and gurdwara and cremation ground on the other,” said Rajiv Kumar, an area resident.

The residents recently met Member of Parliament from Fatehgarh Sahib Sukhdev Singh Libra and apprised him of their problem. The MP assured the delegation of area residents that the matter would be taken up with the railway department officials.

Day V: Farmers stay firm
Parmod Mehta

Dera Bassi, January 28
It’s been five days that farmers of the Bhankarpur village have been protesting to get the ownership right of the land that they have been cultivating since 50 years.

Congress leader Rakesh Sharma and Deepinder Singh Dhillon had visited the dharna site and promised support to the struggling farmers. Farmers were shocked with the court’s decision, which was in favour of the village panchyat. Farmers had filed an appeal under Section 11 of the Punjab Village and Common Lands Regulation Act, 1961, to get the ownership right of the land.

Farmers pointed out that as per the land and revenue record in the ownership column 84 ploughs and four nambardars of village were shown as owners of land, but now government is trying to occupy their land. Farmers said that their appeal was dismissed by panchyat director. Bhupinder Singh, Satpal Singh and Jai Singh said farmers had been fighting for the ownership right of 5,200 kanal that was provided to them under the consolidation scheme. Also, 500 kanal was left for common purpose at the time of implementing the consolidation scheme.

Farmers alleged that state government was trying to occupy their land illegally. Earlier, farmers had approached the Punjab Chief Minister, but so far nothing has been done in this regard.

Two persons had even lost their lives after hearing the decision, farmers added. They warned that if government failed to provide justice to farmers, they would resort to hunger strike and block national highway soon.
