Liquor vend cashier robbed of Rs 5 lakh, shot
Zirakpur, January 3
Two masked motorcycle-borne youths shot dead a cashier at a liquor vend in Baltana while robbing him of ` 5 lakh in cash today morning. The incident took place near the bank square in Kalgidhar Enclave on the Zirakpur-Kalka highway when the victim, Mahavir Singla, 35, was on his way to a nearby branch of Kotak Mahindra Bank to deposit the vend’s sale proceeds. The bank branch is located only 300 metres from the vend.

The city remained in the grip of an intense cold wave for the second day today with the day temperature and chilly winds making life difficult for people. The city remained colder than Shimla at 13.2 degrees Celsius, 8 degrees below normal, for the second day. Shimla recorded 14.1 degrees C today.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has ordered for a 10-day police remand for Swami
Aseemanand, an accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case here today. The blast occurred in Hyderabad in 2007. This was the second time when he was sent in police custody for 10 days since he was brought here from Hyderabad on December 22.
