One held for possessing opium
Patiala, January 3 Addressing media persons, SP (detective) Gurdeep Singh Pannu said the accused had been identified as Gurdev Singh, a resident of Haryana. “The accused had bought the contraband from Haryana and was planning to sell it in Patiala,” Pannu added. Pannu further said the police had arrested three robbers, and recovered a luxury car. One of them had robbed the car at gunpoint and later used the car in another robbery in Haryana. The accused have been identified as Aminder Singh, Gurinder Pal Singh and Kuldeep Singh. “We have recovered two more cars from the accused, along with some cartridges and a revolver from these accused,” he added. Meanwhile, the police claimed to have solved the murder case of an elderly resident of urban estate, who was murdered on December 25 and his house was robbed. “One of the accused in the case consumed poison and died, others have been identified, but are still at large,” Pannu added. |

Head-On Collision
Kharar, January 3 Out of the eleven passengers in the vehicle, five died and six were injured. All of them were from different villages of Fatehgarh Sahib and had come to attend a friend’s wedding at village Jalalpur near Lalru and they were returning to Dadiana village. Majat police officials said most of the victims worked as photographers and were sole breadwinners of their respective families. The deceased aged between 30 and 35 have been identified as Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Bahadurgarh village, Hardip Singh, a resident of Kalaur village, Paramjit Singh, a resident of Dadiana village, Kulvir Singh, a resident of Sirhind, and Satnam Singh from village Kubbaheri. The police have registered a case against the truck driver, who is still at large. While the accident prone Qualis was removed from the accident spot, the loaded truck stood at the bridge, disrupting the traffic. Some private people were deployed to navigate the traffic moving on the bridge. |

Chandigarh Apartments sans amenities
Dera Bassi, January 3 Due to lack of proper connectivity of sewerage system, dirty water was flowing in the nearby plots and foul smell is adding to residents’ woes. Residents said they had been waiting for basic amenities since 2003, but management of the housing project just doesn’t bother to take any steps to solve their problems. The rains during the past two days had added to the woes of residents of this apartment. The management of the Chandigarh Apartment had promised the construction of the collapsed wall with in one month, but since five months nothing has been done, the residents said. Due to lack of proper sewerage system, sewerage water is thrown out with pumps in nearby plots and returned to their houses, the residents rued. Roads are also in a bad condition and soon after the rain they turn into ponds, adding to the woes of residents. They further added that they had appealed to the management and builder and a letter was also sent to the builder through SDM Dera Bassi, but no results seem to be in sight. Residents warned that if these problems were not solved soon, they would stage a dharna against the builder soon. Meanwhile, manager of the Chandigarh Apartments Gurmeet Singh also admitted to the lack of basic amenities, but didn’t have any solution to the problems being faced by the residents. |

Dera Bassi, January 3 About 30 out of 50 patients were found to be suffering from low bone mineral density. Dr Raj Kumar Garg, Dr Vivek Bhatia, Dr Anupam Ahuja examined the patients for arthritis, slip disc, osteoporosis, neglected or mismanaged fracture and other orthopaedic problems. |

CM to hold sangat darshan
Bassi Pathana, January 3 Resentment prevails among residents, as CM's sangat darshan programme is only for rural people and they would not be covered under this programme. They alleged that their town had become forlorn and neglected, as there was no one to hear or ventilate their problems. They had submitted representation of their demands to minister for local bodies and even to the CM. A delegation of the residents led by Kulbhushan Malhotra, council president, would submit memorandum to the CM highlighting the problems of the town. According to sources, prominent citizens, industrialists and councillors would meet the CM and submit memorandum for the development of the town. |
Kidnapping Case
Chandigarh, January 3 Deposing before a court under Section 164, CrPC, the girl stated that she was never kidnapped and would soon marry the person she went with after she attained the marriageable age. The girl is currently 17 years old. Earlier, her father, constable Sadashiv Tripathi, had moved a petition in the High Court, accusing the police of not registering an FIR in the case even after his daughter was “kidnapped”. The police had then registered a case of kidnapping and the girl was recovered. She was found to be pregnant and her medical examination was conducted. In her statement before the Magistrate today, the girl stated that she had gone willfully and had also married her lover in a temple. In the petition moved in the court through his wife, her father had stated that she had fallen into bad company and had got herself involved in flesh trade. “She came home on September 1, 2010, and returned to UP on October 5. On the night of October 5, the younger daughter (who has gone missing) was found talking on the mobile phone left behind by her elder daughter. The petitioner scolded her after which she went missing,” the petition read. |

Rishi Khushi of Sector 7 lodged a complaint that an unknown miscreant fled after snatching his mobile phone near Sector 25 last day. A case under Sections 356 and 379 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the police station-11.
Vehicle theft
Liyakat Ali of Mariwala Town, Mani Majra, reported that his Maruti car (CH 03 8995) parked in front of his house was stolen on December 26. The police has registered a case under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code at the Mani Majra police station. |

Chandigarh, January 3 Punjab made a shaky start when they lost their opener Ankit Pursharthy clean bowled by SH Malik for (5) with the team’s total reading 6 for 1 in 2 overs. Then Manan Vohra along with Pargat Singh stitched a 59 runs partnership for the second wicket before Pargat Singh sneaked away a swinger from SH Malik to the wicket keeper JK Singh for 26 off 60 balls inclusive of 4 boundaries. Manan Vohra was then joined by skipper Mandeep Singh and the two took the total to 96 in 25 overs when Manan Vohra was snapped by M Yadav of medium pacer AS Rajput for 43 off 66 balls studded with 8 boundaries. At this stage Anil Sihag joined skipper Mandeep Singh and the duo stitched the most enterprising partnership of 133 runs in 32 overs before Mandeep Singh was caught by Shivansh Sharma of SH Malik after scoring a scintillating (104) off 106 balls inclusive of 17 rousing boundaries hit all round the wicket. Anil Sihag who was batting with great aplomb was joined by Love Kumar and the two took the total to 324 and adding 95 runs for the 5th wicket before Anil Sihag departed being caught by Saurab Kumar off AS Rajput after completing a sedate century (107) off 207 balls inclusive of 14 boundaries. Love Kumar was the next to depart when he was cleaned up by SH Malik for 43 off 69 balls inclusive of 7 hits to the fence with the teams total reading 347 for 6 in 88 overs. Punjab lost another wicket on the penultimate ball of the day when night watchman Kamal Passi was snapped by AD Nath off AS Rajput without disturbing the scorer and reducing Punjab to 349 for 7. Two city lads strike silver, bronze medals
Panchkula, January 3 While Adhiraj bagged two bronze medals in rink I race and road race, Aryan Pal Singh Ghumman bagged a silver medal in rink II race. Students of St Xavier’s, Panchkula, the boys participated in the U-11 boys category. As many as 587 skaters from various states participated in the meet. The boys will now play for the nationals to be held at Vishakhapatnam from January 6 to 11. |

Chandigarh, January 3 The girls’ team was adjudged overall second in the contest. Baljit Kaur, student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, got an individual gold in the foil event. Garima of GMSSS-10 got bronze in epee individual and Himani of GMSSS-10 got bronze in sabre individuals. Chandigarh girls got silver medal in foil team, silver medal in epee team and bronze medal in sabre team. The boys’ team got bronze medal in all the three team events. Out of 19 fencers who participated in the National School Games, 16 students were from GMSSS-10. |
