Muktsar, December 21
Bikramjeet Singh Majithia, MLA and patron of the Youth Akali Dal, stormed this politically volatile district headquarter town today ahead of the Maghi Mela. In a frontal attack on the rebel Manpreet Singh Badal, Majithia described him as a “traitor who deserted Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal while he was undergoing treatment in a hospital”.

Majithia was accorded a tumultuous reception by hundreds of the ruling party activists, who escorted him to the venue of the public meeting in the heart of the town from about 15 km away.

People from the Gidderbaha Assembly constituency of Manpreet Singh came in a large number to greet Majithia.

Majithia accused Manpreet of being a “puppet” in the hands of the Congress and “betraying” Parkash Singh Badal, who had introduced him into politics.

He alleged that PCC chief Amarinder Singh too had now deserted Manpreet midstream by recalling a sitting MLA and his right hand Charanjit Singh Channi, who had been accompanying him (Manpreet) in his “Jago Punjab Yatra” from the day one. Manpreet was left with only a handful of relatives who accompany him in his “yatra”, Majithia claimed.

He accused Manpreet of adopting double standards by having vehemently opposed subsidies to small farmers when he was holding the portfolio of finance minister and now shedding crocodile tears on the issue in a bid to muster support.

He accused Capt Amarinder Singh of having retarded the development of Punjab during his own regime.

The state made strides in development under the current regime of the SAD-led coalition government and particularly, the neglected Malwa region was witnessing industrial revolution with setting up of the Rs 19,000-crore refinery and three mega thermal power projects with an investment of over Rs 30,000 crore. He gave credit of all-round development in the state to Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal under the guidance of his father CM Parkash Singh Badal.

Majithia alleged that Amarinder Singh was trying to belittle achievements of Punjab to satisfy his personal political ambitions.

He claimed that Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was a senior Congress leader, had endorsed the views of Badal for a higher minimum support price to farmers for their agriculture produce. He praised Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa for appreciating the setting up of thermal power stations that would boost the state’s economy.

Majithia said not a single unit had been added to power generation in the state during the regime of Capt Amarinder and work on the refinery had also come to a grinding halt.

He criticised the Congress-led UPA government for spiralling prices that has badly hit the poor and the middle class in particular.

Zira (Ferozepur), Dec 21
Sukhdev Singh, a Jat Sikh, and his wife Mandeep Kaur, belonging to a Scheduled Caste, were allegedly murdered by his parents here. Though the couple was murdered on the night of December 6, the matter came to light when Karaj Singh, father of Sukhdev, was arrested and confessed to his crime two days back. The case against Karaj Singh and his wife Manjeet Kaur was registered on the complaint lodged by Rajni Kanta, Mandeep’s sister.

Initially, it was considered to be case of suspected honour killing as Sukhdev had tied the knot with Mandeep alias Ninu against the wishes of his parents over two years ago. However, the initial police investigation revealed that Sukhdev, who had turned a drug addict, had been harassing his parents.

Police sources said on the night of December 6, Karaj and his wife Manjeet administered sleeping pills to both Sukhdev and Ninu. When they became unconscious, Karaj strangulated them to death. After committing the crime, both Karaj and Manjeet put their bodies in gunny bags, loaded it onto a tractor trailer, belonging to cooperative society of Machhiwara village, where Karaj was working as salesman, and took them to the bank of Rajasthan Feeder canal near Kasoana village.

The accused threw the bodies into the canal and returned to their house in Kalgidhar Nagar. However, Rajni Kanta, who tried to talk with her sister on phone, became suspicious, when Karaj and Manjeet could not given her a convincing answer about the absence of Sukhdev and Ninu. Rajni approached the police. Ninu was pregnant at that time.

Kaustab Sharma, SSP, said teams had been sent to trace the dead bodies. Manjeet was yet to be arrested, he added.

Migratory birds poisoned to death in Hari Ke, accused held
Chander Parkash/TNS

Hari Ke, December 21
Four migratory birds, who travelled thousands of miles to reach this sanctuary from Siberia and other Central Asia countries, were poisoned to death by Raj Singh, a resident of Manu Machhi village, with the aim to use their meat for food.

However, Raj was caught by the alert guards deployed in and around the Hari Ke wetland while they were patrolling the area. The accused was carrying all the four migratory birds, identified as common teal, in his hand, when he was caught. Official sources said that this was the sixth incident when unscrupulous elements had tried to indulge in illegal fishing in this wetland, made attempts to encroach upon its area for agricultural use and in cutting the forest cover and habitat of wild animals this month.

Sources said that Raj was formally arrested after it was confirmed that he had poisoned all the four migratory birds with the intention to use their meat as food. A case was registered against him under various sections of Wildlife Protection Act.

Sources said that the post- mortem of migratory birds had been conducted and different parts of their body would be sent to veterinary college, Jalandhar, for examination to find out what kind of poison was administered. These birds would be buried tomorrow. A videography of this entire exercise would be done.

Sanjeev Tiwari, Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife), when contacted, said that Raj had been sent to judicial custody till January 4 by the judicial officer concerned when he (Raj) was produced in his court at Sultanpur Lodhi today in the evening.

The protesters also submitted a memorandum of their demands to the district administration, which was received by the Bathinda Tehsildar.

Their main demands include implementation of the Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in letter and spirit, 100 days' work to the MNREGA job-card holders, enhancement in the daily wages of MNREGA workers from Rs 123 to Rs 148, payment of the benefit under "Shagun scheme' (Rs 15,000) for the year 2009 and 2010 to thousands of beneficiaries, enhancement in old-age pension from Rs 250 to Rs 450 per month, allotment of a 10 marla plot to each houseless Dalit, revision in the existing norms of below poverty line (BPL) families and free education for children of agriculture workers.

Other speakers also flayed the Centre and the state government for not paying proper attention towards the Dalits and rural poor.

Among others who spoke included assistant secretary of the CPI Jasvir Singh Akalia, district president of Kisan Sabha Balkaran Singh Brar, district secretary of Khet Mazdoor Sabha Harbans Singh, district secretary of Istri Sabha Jasvir Kaur Saran and member of the national council of Khet Mazdoor Sabha Surjit Singh Sohi.
