Nepali folk dances enthral at Khalanga fair
Dehradun, December 5
Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank inaugurated the fair. Khalanga Mela was feted to celebrate the glory of gallantry act of Gorkha warriors, who knocked down the British army in the Khalanga war. Gorkhas all the way from Delhi, Moradabad, Darjeeling and Bhaksu had gathered to exhibit their cultural heritage and pay tribute to the martyrs who had lost their lives in the battlefield. Cultural programmes like Nepali folk dances and folk songs were presented by local performers and schoolchildren during the fair. But Nepali cuisines were primarily the main attraction of the mela that brought a majority of the visitors to a halt and check out the delicacies being served at the food stalls. Nallapani, the spot where Gorkha soldiers were martyred, is about 10 km away from the city. November 30 is marked as the anniversary of the historic battle, whereas December 6 is celebrated as their day of Independence. To pay homage to the warrior’s martyrdom, twin Khalanga War Memorials have been established at the Sahastradhara road, which is under the maintenance of the Archeological Survey of India. President of the Balbhadra Khalanga Vikas Samiti Ram Singh Thapa said the day-long mela was held every year and the samiti was trying to seek funds and other help from the state government to organise the event. He even alleged negligence being meted out to the Gorkha community and their festivals. “We being nationals of the same country are treated as foreigners. We are in minority and feel ignored, but the Gorkhas have proven their mettle in the battle and political field, too”. “We request the state and Centre to render the Gorkha community with recognition in the society. The government should take some initiatives to develop Sagartaal into a well-known tourist spot. The spot where the battle was fought and the remnants were found should be handed over to the Archaeological Survey of India,” added Thapa. |

The show was managed under the supervision of Dr VK Sharma, Chairman, Rajesh Gulati, President, Vimal Chauhan, Vice-President, and Navneet Chaudhary, Secretary of the Doon Valley Kennel Club. David A Stanchan from Australia and Sharad Sharma from Gurgaon were the judges. Mayank Chaudhary, a breeder, who had come all the way from Muzaffarnagar for the first time, participated to showcase the obedience skills of her labradors. She looked excited and said that this was a great medium to get dog lovers together from various parts of the country. “This year, it has been extraordinary because of the large numbers of exhibitors and excellent response from viewers. The dogs are judged on the basis of their walk, teeth and health,” said Navneet Chaudhary, secretary, Doon Valley Kennel Club. Amid so many breeds, St Bernard remained the centre of attraction for its massive size, calm nature and vibrant colour combo of white and brown. People in large numbers thronged these dogs to capture memories in their cameras. Apart from showcasing skills inside the arena, dog owners from Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have come up to sell puppies during the show. The breeders were also guiding people about the pedigree, temperament and quality. “I have come from Punjab and brought three bull mastiffs for the show and to sell their pups. The price of each pup is Rs 30,000,” said Kishore, a breeder. Before the final presentation, some breeders were seen brushing their pets while others were patting the dog and gearing them to face the competition with confidence and good postures. Under the guidelines of the Kennel Club of India (KCI), dogs, which were registered and had participated, were given a challenge certificate (CC) and best of breed (BOB) titles with mementos and certificates. “The dog show in Doon gets a good response as people in the town are fond of dogs. Also the dogs, which had earlier won competitions, stand a better chance of winning again,” said Anchal Chaudhary, member of the organising committee. However, along with oodles of fun and easy availability of puppies, various stalls displaying dog food, leashes, collars, therapeutic items, coats and beddings were also installed. Furthermore, a vet counter to check the bloodline and quality was also available at the event. Under the supervision of expert doctors, buyers were informed about proper care taking of the dogs. Citurgia Case: Public money wasted to defend govt?
Tribune News Service There were a whole set of questions and issues emerging which saw them being discussed at length amid groups of lawyers, mediapersons and even officials, expectedly in hushed tones. The most important question that came up for discussion was around the decision of the Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state not to field its Advocate General SN Babulkar to defend it in the case. Instead of getting its own Advocate General to appear for it, the government had gone ahead with fielding former Union Law Minister Shanti Bhushan and later eminent lawyer and BJP leader from Uttar Pradesh Kesri Nath Tripathi. This decision of the government has led several people among the legal fraternity fuming. An oft-heard refrain while the hearings were on was, “Does the government have no faith in its own Advocate General?” “Is it trying to convey that the lawyers in the state are not capable of defending it? Or is it pure desperation to wriggle out of the muck that it has landed in that the government is doing this?” Nobody had any answer to these questions. The next-discussed issue was about the money that went into defending the government in the case. The question that emerged regularly amid discussions in media circles and the legal fraternity was that if the government has a full-fledged Advocate General who is being paid, where is the money being paid to the top shot lawyers from outside coming from? If it is going from the exchequer, does the government have the right to pay these lawyers public money just to save itself in a court case where there are serious allegations against it? The third obvious question was that how much fees had been paid to the lawyers? Again there were no answers. The state government had a whole lot of officials landing here from Dehradun during the hearings to provide its lawyers and the court whatever papers were sought by them. The officials burnt midnight oil and were obviously not a happy lot despite being pampered to work through the nights by their higher-ups. Again the issue that was being discussed was that where were these officials lodged? If they were lodged in private hotels, does the government again have a right to spend public money this way when there are government guest houses available? Once again there have been no answers as yet. Guest house in shambles
This brings us to the pathetic condition in which the state guest house, or Nainital Club as it is popularly known, exists as on date. Located in a prime location in the heart of the town, the place desperately requires immediate attention. There are a large number of rooms crying for proper maintenance and are struggling to emerge out of the year around dampness that has set in. The officialdom has done what it has always been doing. Only the rooms where the ministers and other top shots stay on the lower side of the campus are well maintained while the others are left in a pathetic state. The workers point out that it has been several years that the premises saw a proper whitewash, what to talk of repairs etc.
Snowfall eagerly awaited
Winter has set in at a very fast pace. The Lake City as well as nearby areas are experiencing chilly weather conditions these days which has made daily life difficult. With the setting in of the cold, the sales of winter clothing and appliances used to keep the people warm have shot up. Those related to tourist trade are now awaiting a quick snowfall so that they can make up for the shortfall experienced this time during the autumn season. Autumn saw a shortfall of tourists on account of the very poor road conditions following the rain-related disaster that had hit Kumaon during the monsoon. The conditions of the roads have improved partially, but there is a lot that needs to be done. If the region gets a snowfall early this month, the tourism sector can reap the dual benefits of high tourist arrival not only for Christmas and New Year, but also for the snowfall.
Power weddings
The past fortnight saw the marriage season in full swing across the region. There were numerous weddings taking place on a daily basis. Among those getting married were the wards of politicians and the small-time political workers receiving invitations to such weddings could be seen going around talking about them being invited. It was amid this environment that a lawyer came up with a very interesting observation. He said, “Notice one thing - politicians want to get their sons and daughters wedded when they are members of the state Assembly or Parliament.” He was right to some extent as the ones who got their children married recently were Education Minister Gobind Singh Bisht, Member of Parliament KC Singh Baba and Senior Congress leader in the State Assembly Tilak Raj
Behed.
Steppe eagles flock Kumaon
Kumaon is known for paying host to a large varieties of birds that migrate to this region every year from various parts of the world. Displaying its fondness for Nainital and its surrounding areas these days is the steppe eagle that has arrived in large numbers. The bird is known to arrive here after travelling thousands of km from Central Asia. Bird watchers say that the bird finds the area around Nainital most conducive not only for its stay, but also for increasing its numbers.

It has further gone down to 30,889 students in government primary schools in the district. “Lack of teachers at the primary schools in the interior areas is the main reason behind the decreasing number of students in these schools,” said Tiruwa. Salary credit in banks thrills soldiers
Dehradun, December 5 From December 1, the monthly emoluments of a jawan, posted at the Bengal Engineer Group and the Centre, were credited directly to his salary account in any nationalised bank. This has enabled him to withdraw either a part of his salary or the whole amount, depending on his requirement. Even if a soldier is on leave, he will not have to take a leave advance as his pay will be credited monthly. He will also be able to withdraw the amount at his home through an ATM or a branch of the bank. With a dual ATM debit card, issued for joint accounts, the spouses will also be able to withdraw money from an ATM. This will negate the delay caused on account of misplaced money orders or postal delays. Sapper Tribhuwan said, “Earlier, when we were on leave, we would take an advance due to which our accounts would go into debit. This has been ruled out as only our dues will be credited. Once, when I was on temporary duty to Joshimath, I had to send money home for my sister’s marriage, but was helpless. Now, this will not happen as my salary will always be credited without any additional documentation or any other formality”. |
