It’s beginning of new story in Bihar: Nitish
Patna, November 24 Speaking to a huge gathering of mediapersons at his official residence this afternoon, Nitish said: “The electorate of Bihar had two options this time -one was to take the state forward and another was to take it back to the dark days. They opted for the first one.” “We have no magic wand, but people’s trust. I will need to work harder than I did in the last five years and I will not hesitate to do it. The outcome of the elections also proves beyond doubt that it was a victory for development and for the people of the state,” said Nitish. He said that ‘good governance’ (Sushashan) had been the priority of his government and it would remain so even in his second term. According to Nitish, the election results had written a new story and given a loud and clear message to all politicians across the country that the people would reward hard and sincere work in the form of votes. “Now there would be competition among the politicians to work”, he said. Without naming his rival Lalu Prasad, Nitish said the writing on the wall was very clear. “Gone are the days of big talks. Caste and creed would not help you get people’s mandate,” he said. Talking about the reasons behind this landslide mandate, he said he was concentrating only on his work and like any other citizen of Bihar he was anxiously waiting for the election results today. “Now that the results are out, I would pray to the almighty to give me the capability to come up to the people’s expectation,” said Nitish. In reply to a question regarding the continuing of his alliance with the BJP, Nitish said, “The two parties would continue to work together,” he said. Rahul

Bihar in pocket, BJP now eyes Centre
New Delhi, November 24 Jaitely, surrounded by a host of BJP leaders and almost all the half-a-dozen party spokespersons, addressed the media soon after the Bihar results showing a landslide victory for his alliance. Describing the victory as a harbinger of a great change of agenda in Bihar, Nitish Kumar’s best and most trusted friend and ally in the BJP said, “This victory strengthens the hope of return of NDA Government at the
Centre.” While Jaitely refused to elaborate any further, a BJP political analyst elaborated, “The Left will cease to be the fulcrum for an alternative to the Congress-led collation currently ruling the country after the West Bengal and Kerala elections, where they will do badly. After that all those opposed to the Congress will wily nily return to us for creating the alternative to the
UPA.” Meanwhile, Jaitely emphasised how developmental agenda has won against caste and dynasty politics of both the Congress and Lalu
Prasad. He was referring to the failure of Rahul Gandhi to make an impact and the defeat of former Bihar chief minister Rabri
Devi. "It is a vote for the future of Bihar...The NDA ran a government with maturity and integrity," he said. Describing the victory in Bihar as "unprecedented", party leader Sushma Swaraj said the election results indicated that only those governments will sustain which work for development. "The message of the Bihar election is that the governments which work for people, which ensure development agenda alone will be able to come back to power.” BJP president Nitin
Gadkari, too, described it as a victory politics of development. "This proves that there will be no space for politics of caste in 21st century politics. The politics of progress and development will prevail over all others,” he said. JD(U) president Sharad Yadav further bolstered BJP hopes when he announced, "Our alliance has won the election” and reiterated that there will be no break in alliance with the BJP saying, “There was an alliance, there is an alliance and there will be an alliance." |

SC reserves verdict on Swamy’s plea
New Delhi, November 24 Arguing for the CBI before a Bench comprising Justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly, senior counsel KK Venugopal said the investigation agency had no objection to the SC monitoring the probe as long as no aspersions were cast on it. The CBI counsel said the agency had been carrying out a thorough probe, leaving no room for complaints that it could have been done better. However, this was immediately contested by Prashant, stating that the CBI was yet to question then Telecom minister A Raja, held responsible by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) for several irregularities. Earlier in the day, the Bench reserved its verdict on Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy’s petition seeking a directive to the Prime Minister for permitting him to prosecute Raja for the scam. |
Govt likely to curtail winter session
New Delhi, November 24 To start with, the government cancelled crucial Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting which was scheduled to be held at 3 pm today to discuss and decide business for the Lok Sabha in the forthcoming week and allocate time to issues slated to be raised in the House. Until morning, the meeting was on but around 12 noon, the leaders of political parties in the Lower House were informed by the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry of its cancellation which means there’s no business before the House. Dropping of the meeting added weight to the likelihood of Parliament’s adjournment sine die. “That the meeting did not take place indicates the session in all likelihood will be cut short. The government has barely passed any business and yet cancelled the BAC meeting which shows it has no agenda for the coming week. Effectively, there will be no session next week,” a senior political party leader told The Tribune. Another evidence of the government’s intention of cutting short this session came from the unexpected listing of Railway Ministry’s supplementary budget demands today. Highly placed Lok Sabha sources told TNS that these demands were not part of the business of Lok Sabha originally decided for today and that they were included following the last-minute request from the Railway Ministry. The only critical business the government must pass this session is the excess budgetary demand - both general and railways. |
NRIs to get voting rights
New Delhi, November 24 Both Houses of Parliament had passed the Representation of People (Amendment) Bill in the Winter Session of Parliament to grant voting rights to NRIs. It was at the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas in January this year that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced that Indian passport holders living abroad could get voting rights by the time the next Lok Sabha elections are held in 2014. Ravi said citizens of India who have not acquired the citizenship of any other country and were living abroad owing to employment, education, or otherwise, were now eligible to register their names in the electoral rolls in the constituency of the address shown in their passport and to vote when and if they were physically present when polls were held. The Election Commission would soon finalise the rules and regulations prescribing the modalities for NRIs to enter their names as voters in the electoral rolls of the concerned constituency. Thereafter, the NRIs would be able to register themselves and exercise their voting rights. Until now, an NRI’s name gets deleted from the voters’ list if he or she stays outside the country for more than six months at a stretch. The new law will allow an Indian citizen residing abroad to enroll in the voters’ list and exercise his/her franchise even if he/ she remained away from place of residence in India for more than six months. |
MHA official in six-day police custody
New Delhi, November 24 “Evidence has been collected against the 1994 batch IAS officer that includes around 12,000 telephone conversations. The IAS officer was using three mobile numbers which he had procured on the basis of fictitious identity,” said the Delhi police, seeking Singh and Kumar’s remand. |
2G scam: ED grills Radia for 8 hrs
New Delhi, November 24 An ED official told the media waiting outside the office that they questioned her regarding her foreign transactions and she would be called for questioning against if and when need arose. He said Radia promised to submit other documents needed by them. Official sources said Radia, whose taped conversations with a number of people including some leading journalists are doing the round these days and show her lobbying for A Raja as communications minister soon after the UPA government was voted back to power last year, submitted details of her clients, bank accounts and payments made in foreign currencies. Radia is expected to submit more documents in coming days. She had not been turning up for questioning at the ED office so far citing ill health. Radia told the media personnel that her dealings were “transparent” and blamed “mad media frenzy” for her woes. She said she was and would cooperate with investigating agencies. She did not comment over the 2G scam. She said she would speak to the media at an appropriate time. |
