PNB staff killed in road mishap:
A 54-year-old employee of the Punjab National Bank Krishan Kumar of the Green Avenue locality opposite the Rose Garden was killed in a road mishap at Bibiwala road here this evening. Volunteers of the Noujwan Welfare Society said Krishan Kumar was riding a scooter when a speeding truck crushed him to death. Till the filing of the news, the accused driver was at large and police was investigating the spot where the mishap took place.

Trespassers booked: Ravi Tiwari of the local Baba Deep Singh Nagar locality lodged a complaint with the police that some unidentified persons trespassed in a banquet hall where his brother’s wedding party was on and intimidated the guests by pointing a revolver at them without any provocation on Monday. Acting upon the complaint, Civil Lines police registered a case against unidentified persons under sections 188, 506 and 34 of the IPC.

House on Powerhouse road burgled: Amarjit Singh, personal assistant of the District Planning Committee chairman, Sikander Singh Maluka, alleged that some unidentified persons committed a burglary at his residential quarter located at local Powerhouse and stole various ornaments worth Rs 65,000 on Monday evening. Acting upon his allegations, Civil Lines police lodged a case under section 454 and 380 of the IPC. However, the accused were at large.

100 units of blood collected:
Hundred units of blood were collected during a blood donation camp organised by the NSS unit of SUS Women Engineering College in Tangori today. The camp was organised with the help of PGI, Chandigarh. It was sponsored by the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Blood Donation Society, Kharar.

Agitation put off:
An action committee of the Government Classical and Vernacular Teachers’ Union has decided to postpone its agitation after CM Parkash Singh Badal’s announcement regarding acceptance of long pending demands of the union during the meeting with the union leader led by Harbhajan Singh Dhindsa, chief patron and president of the North India of the union. The action committee welcomed the announcement and thanks the Chief Minister.

Financier goes missing:
Lalit Dudeja ( 33 ), a financier, has gone missing under mysterious circumstances. According to an FIR lodged at the Kotwali police station, Lalit had left home on scooter on Wednesday evening but did not return. Later, the police recovered his scooter from the bank of the Bhakhra canal in Patiala. On the basis of call details, the police has rounded up a driver, who dropped Lalit in Delhi.

Science event begins at PU: Based on the theme “Biotechnology - its blue, green, red and white faces”, signifying and symbolising marine, agriculture, medicine, and industrial products, a three-day national-level science event “Biotechnica Chandigarh-2010” began on the Panjab University campus here today. Asis Datta, Professor of Eminence, Director, National Institute of Plants Genome Research (NIPGR), and President, NASI, talked about improving shelf life of vegetables and fruits.

Pulse polio drive: A house-to-house polio coverage was carried out by special teams covering the population residing in HRAs (high risk areas) and particularly in areas seeing influx of migrant population. Children below five years of age were given polio drops by health teams comprising health officials, students, teachers and volunteers from all sectors of society. At least 95,812 children were vaccinated in the three-day of SNID activity.

800 constables promoted:
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Ashok.Kumar Gupta, today promoted 800 constables to the rank of selection grade constables in the pay scale of Rs 5,200-20,200+Grade Pay 2,100 with effect from November 15.
