4 injured in pharma unit fire

Dera Bassi, November 16
Four factory workers were injured in a fire that broke out in a chemical factory near Dera Bassi today evening. According to information, the fire broke out at Anuja Healthcare Limited in industrial focal point, Mubarkpur, at around 6.30 pm.

The injured were rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh, in serious condition. Fire officials said the exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained yet. However, sources said the fire broke out after a blast in the factory.

Fire tenders from Dera Bassi and Mohali rushed to the spot to douse flames.

SDM Puneet Goyal and DSP Jatinder Khaira rushed to the spot to monitor rescue operations.

Meanwhile, the police has registered a case against the management of Anuja Healthcare Limited.

1 held with 3-kg opium

Fatehgarh Sahib, November 16
The police today arrested one person with three kg opium. The accused has been identified as Mahavir Singh, a resident of Saha village in Ambala.

He was arrested during a special naka from near Ladpur village near Mandi Gobindgarh. A case has been registered against the accused under the NDPS Act at the Mandi Gobindgarh police station. The police is investigating the matter. — TNS

Archery meet begins in Patiala

Patiala, November 16
The first Saheed Udham Singh All-India Open Archery tournament started on Punjabi University campus here today. University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh declared the tournament open.

He said it was a good chance for players to improve their performance for international events.

He said the tournament would open new door for archery lovers and players of Punjab. Director sports Dr Raj Kumar thanked the university authorities for their support.

A total of 11 teams from all across the country, including 30 international archers are participating in the tournament. Club president S Harpal Singh Teja said winning teams would be given cash prizes worth ` 11,000, ` 7,100 and ` 5,100, respectively.

Four arrested for snatching mobiles

Chandigarh, November 16
The police claimed to have solved several cases of mobile snatching in the city with the arrest of four persons. While one of accused, Vicky, was arrested on Monday, the police later caught three others — Rakesh, alias Monty, Prem Chand, both from Panchkula, and Vikas, a resident of Mouli Jagran.

Vicky was arrested on the intervening night of November 14 and 15 when he stabbed a migrant from behind and took away Rs 150. On his disclosure, his accomplice Rakesh was arrested.

Rakesh along with Vicky had robbed Monu, a resident of Mauli Jagran, a few days ago.

Rakesh was involved in another case of damaging public property.

Similarly, Prem Chand and Vikas had snatched a mobile phone from Indresh, a resident of Mauli Jagran.

In his complaint, Indresh had alleged that he along with his friends Babu Ram and Salesh was returning home after work when the accused riding a motorbike (HR 03 C 3174) snatched his mobile and sped away.

The police has recovered the stolen mobile from the accused.

“With the arrest of the accused, we hope to figure out more cases of snatching and theft in the area,” said JS Khera, DSP (East).

Kidnapping Case
One held, three still at large

The police was successful in arresting one of the accused involved in the kidnapping of one-and-a-half-year-old child of a local businessman. According to sources, police team comprising senior officials of the Sector-14 police station, CIA staff and Kurukshetra police managed to arrest one of the accused.

However, the other three accused are still at large.

It is worth mentioning here that one-and-a-half-year old child of a local businessman, cousin of the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Bansal, was allegedly kidnapped from a park outside his house in Sector 7 on October 5.

The kidnappers had demanded Rs 1 crore as ransom but finally settled for Rs 20 lakh and released the boy the next day.

SSP Maneesh Chaudhary confirmed that one of the accused had been arrested in the kidnapping case.

He refused to provide more details stating that a press conference would be held tomorrow as three more accused were yet to be arrested.

2 burglars held

Two burglars Dilbagh and Rohit Kumar have been arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in a theft committed at a house in Sector 70.

SHO Matour police station Tarlochan Singh said Rs 4,000 cash, several gold jewellery items, 12 watches and some other items have been recovered from them.

They have confessed to have committed several burglaries in Chandigarh.

Easy win for city lad, enters next round

City lad Suraj Beniwal easily sailed into the next round of the AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament for U-14 and U-18 boys and girls at the Lake Club courts after beating Udai Mann in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 here today.

Beniwal put up a good show of volleys and service to dominate his opponent.

This is the 12th tournament being organised by the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association this year.

All doubles matches for boys’ U-14 and 18 and girls’ U-18 are in progress.

Chandigarh, November 16
Asha School, Chandimandir, and Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, has bagged gold medals in boys’ and girls’ events of the Special Olympics Bharat, Chandigarh, at Bhavan Vidyalaya here today.

About 50 athletes from four different institutions from the city and its surrounding villages participated.

Vineeta Arora, principal, Bhavan Vidyalaya, who was the chief guest gave away medals and prizes to the winners.

Neelu Sarin, area director of Chandigarh, said the selection committee had selected the athletes, who would be participating in the six-day National Championship of the Floor Hockey to be organised at Shimla from December 14.

Boys: Asha School, Chandimandir (Ist), SOREM, Sector 36, (2nd), Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, (3rd) and Sadhana Vocational Training Institute, Mani Majra (4th).

LIC pip Youngster Club by 10 wickets

Excellent bowling spell by LIC’s trio, Preeti, Mala and Rajni, who took two wickets each, helped LIC Club, Sector 26, beat Youngster Club by 10 wickets in the Junior State Cricket Women Tournament (U-19) for Pt Kedarnath Trophy, held at GMSSS, Sector 56, here today.

The three LIC bowlers didn’t spare Youngster Club that decided to bat first after wining the toss.

LIC bowlers bundled them out for 55 runs in just 14.4 overs. Manisha was the other wicket taker who scalped one wicket giving away three runs.

For youngsters, Kirti and Neha were the only scorers, who faced the tough wrath of LIC bowlers and scored 20 and 17 runs, respectively.

Chasing the victory target, LIC Club didn’t face any difficulty in achieving the target of 56 runs in just 11.2 overs and that, too, without losing a wicket.

Manisha and Anita with 25 and 12, respectively, were the main scorers.

Chandigarh Women's Cricket Association is organising the tournament to promote women cricket. A total eight teams are taking part.

Chahat brings laurels in swimming

Chahat Arora, a student of Class VIIIth of Saupin’s School, Sector 32, Chandigarh, won a bronze medal in the 57th Open School National Swimming Games held at Solapur, Maharashtra, in the 50mt breast stroke event in U-14 girls’ category.

Chahat had also bagged silver medal in the same events in school nationals as well as in the CBSE nationals held at Kolkata and Rohtak, respectively, last year.

She does her practice under the guidance of coaches Parminder Singh and Jasjeet Kaur. — TNS
