Lecture on healthy eating

The department of home science, Khalsa College, Patiala, organised a lecture delivered by Gurdip Kaur, dietician, AIIMS, New Delhi, on “Healthy Eating”. “There is a need to indulge in healthy eating habits to protect ourselves from stressful lifestyles.

Declamation contest

Patiala, November 14
An inter-school declamation contest was held at Blossom Senior Secondary School here yesterday. A total of 25 students from 13 schools participated in the contest.The participants spoke on the issue “Sectarianism poses grave challenge to India’s unity and growth”. Devdarsh from Budha Dal Public School, Patiala, and Sanya Chabra from Mukat Public School, Rajpura, were the joint winners.

The second prize went to Ruchi from Arya School, Patiala, and Simarjeet Kaur from Mukat Public School, Rajpura. The third prize was bagged by Ramninder Kaur from Army School, Patiala. — TNS

Undertrial dies of cardiac arrest

Ambala, November 14
An undertrial prisoner in Ambala Jail died this morning.The deceased was identified as Ajay Kumar, a resident of Vidhisha (Madhya Pradesh).He was in jail for a theft case. According to sources, Ajay was suffering from heart problem.

Last evening his condition became serious and he died of cardio arrest on his way to the hospital.

The body was kept in the civil hospital for autopsy.

Lecture on global competitiveness

A special lecture on “Global competitiveness” was organised by the commerce department of Multani Mal Modi College here yesterday.Prof SC Vaidya from University Business School, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the key speaker. He emphasised that Indian business needed to do restructuring and go through the process of creativity.

“In the world of e-commerce, customers are gaining power and are demanding quality goods at cheaper rates,” he said.

Dr Vaidya gave relevant examples from day-to-day life to make the undergraduates understand certain subtle concepts of global economy.

Doc found drunk on duty

Mohali, November 14
Mohali Civil Surgeon PK Sridhar has marked an inquiry into the incident of a doctor on emergency duty at the Civil Hospital, Phase 6, reporting on duty allegedly in an inebriated condition last night.

The incident came to light when councillor of Mohali Municipal Council Usha Rani approached the doctor to attend on his husband who was admitted at the hospital. When the doctor, Karamjit Singh, did not listen, he called up another councillor RP Sharma who then informed SMO Rajiv Bhalla and the Civil Surgeon. The doctor was immediately removed from the duty.

One booked under cruelty to animals Act

Mohali, November 14
A Jind resident in Haryana has been booked by the Mohali police under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for allegedly transporting poultry birds in an inhuman manner.

ASI Ajiab Singh of the central investigation wing of the district police stated Satvir Singh, a resident of village Kharal in Jind district of Haryana, was transporting 1,460 poultry birds in an inhuman manner in his vehicle (HR-52-2889). On checking, it was detected that the vehicle was loaded beyond capacity.

A case under Section 2 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, has been registered.

Golf meet for YPS passouts

About 48 former students of YPS, Patiala, including former DGP NPS Aulakh, participated in the AYOSA Bhagat Golf Tournament at the par-72 greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club here yesterday.

Others who teed off for the title were former ADGP MPS Aulakh and Rima Dhillon.

Raja Malvinder Singh, member of the board of governors, YPS, Patiala, gave away prizes to the winners.

City golf team leaves for Lucknow

Chandigarh, November 14
A six-member Chandigarh Golf Club team left for Lucknow today to take part in the north regional final of the ninth McDowell Signature Club Golf Championship to be played on November 16.

The team comprising HS Kang, Col SDS Bath, Brig PPS Dhillon, KS Bhattal, GS Kochhar and Col JS Kang qualified from the inter-club stage.

The winners of the north regional final will proceed to Bangkok, Thailand, to compete in the national final to be held at the Bangkok Golf Club course on December 9.

Capt GS Ghuman, chairman, tournament committee, said, “As a gesture from our side, the Chandigarh Golf Club is providing complimentary golf balls, golf gloves and T-shirts to our six-member team.”

Deepak, Nimrat in quarterfinals

Deepak Thapa and Nimrat Walia have reached the quarterfinals in the U-18 boys’ and girls’ events, respectively, in the AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament being organised by the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) here.

The main draw first round matches for boys’ and girls’ would be held at the CLTA Complex and Lake Sports Complex, Chandigarh, from 9.30 am on November 15.

In the second match, Government College for Women, Ludhiana, and Dasmesh Girls College, Badal, played a draw match with 1-1 goal each.

Junior cricket meet begins

Chandigarh, November 14
Junior State Cricket Women Tournament (U-19) for Pt Kedarnath Trophy would be organised by the Chandigarh Women's Cricket Association at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 56, from November 15.

Stating this in a press release here today RK Sood, organising secretary, said players born after 1 January, 1992, are participating in the tournament.

He said eight teams were taking part in the tournament and the first match would be played between Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, and Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, at 9.30 am after the opening ceremony.

The Baseball Association, Chandigarh, is organising the selection trials of the coaching camp for participation in the 25th National Baseball Championship to be held at Indore from November 22 to November 27, a press release said here today.
