Man ends life
Kharar, November 12 The police said Gyan Chand had been an alcoholic for some time, often resulting in quarrels with his wife over trivial issues. He was father of four children. His elder daughter found the body hanging from the fan around 11 pm last night. The police said no suicide note had been recovered from the scene and inquest proceedings had been initiated in this regard. |

Shop burgled in Kalka
Kalka, November 12 According to sources, a watchman noticed the locks of the grocery shop broken around 3.30 am. He informed Devinder Jain, owner of the shop, who further informed the police about the incident. The owner claimed that the thieves broke open the glass and locks of the shop and took away Rs 25,000 in cash and articles worth Rs 15,000. The police examined the scene and later registered a case. A team of fingerprint experts also visited the scene. |

Woman killed in accident
Chandigarh, November 12 The mishap took place around 10 am when Shakuntala, a resident of Sector 25 who worked as domestic help, was walking back home. According to the police, Shakuntala was hit by a rashly driven vehicle, which fled after hitting her. She received a severe head injury and was rushed by the PCR to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, where she succumbed to her injuries later. An autorickshaw driver, who was some distance from the spot, told the police that he saw a car hitting her, but could not recall its make or number. The woman was survived by her husband and five children. A case of causing death due to negligence against was registered at the Sector 11 police station. |

Panchkula, November 12 Nishant was an engineering graduate and had been in the town for the past two months looking for a job. After leaving a job in a company at Shimla, he had slipped into depression. His father Manoj Kumar is a businessman. A case has been registered at the police chowki, Sector 7. The body was handed over to the family members after a post-mortem exaination at the General Hospital, Sector 6. |

Two held on robbery charge
Chandigarh, November 12 DSP (Central) Jagbir Singh said the accused were nabbed during a search operation conducted by sub-inspector Harminderjit Singh, in charge of the Sector 24 police post. The accused were identified as Anuj Khan and Amar Singh, residents of Janta Colony in Naya Gaon. The police recovered three mobile phones and a bicycle, which they snatched from the victims at knife-point. |

Panchkula, November 12 In the first semifinal, Saupin’s School registered a 40-run victory over Shivalik Public School. Saupin’s team managed to pile up 118 runs in 20 overs with the loss of eight wickets. Prabhjit of Saupin’s was the leading scorer with 27 runs in 30 balls while Swapnil and Anhad, too, made significant contributions. Shivalik Public School could not manage to stand up to the disciplined bowling of Saupin’s and scored only 79 runs with the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs. In the second semifinal of the day between Stepping Stones and GNPS-36, Stepping Stones won by a margin of 126 runs. Stepping Stones team won the toss and elected to bat. They posted an impressive score of 266 runs in 20 overs with the loss of no wickets. Yogesh was the highest scorer with 169 runs in 72 balls. GNPS team was all bundled out in 20 overs with a score of 141 runs. |
Mann qualifies for Asia Pacific golf meet
Chandigarh, November 12 The single handicap golfer, Mann qualified for the above 55 senior event during the selection trials held by the Indian Golf Union at the Royal Calcutta Golf Course from October 20 to 22. Mann was a picture of confidence, as he talked to mediapersons. He said five years back he had also made it to the Indian team for the Ravi Kirloskar Trophy hosted by the Pakistan Golf Association for those above 50. He was hopeful of doing well in Thailand and promised to keep the media posted about his performance in Bangkok. To be played on a stroke play format over 54 holes, each country will send a six-member team for the championship. There will be competition for both individual and team championship. The winner will receive the championship gold medal and carry home the YA Bhg Tun Abdul Hamid Cup. The winning team will be determined by the lowest aggregate of the four best scores of each round. The team is being led by 59-year-old Lakshman Singh from Kolkata. The other members of the team, besides IPS Mann are VP Date, Krishna Bajoria, Vijay Kumar Bhadana and Gangesh Khaitan. Golf Club president Birinder Singh Gill said, “It is a proud moment for all of us at the club.” Capt GS Ghuman, chairman of the tournament committee, said, “It is heartening to see a senior player having such an enthusiasm for the game and having qualified for such a championship. Our younger players have a lot to learn from IPS Mann.” |
Himal secures 3rd position in chess
Chandigarh, November 12 A total of 77 players, including three International masters from different states participated. Seeded 7th Himal had a good start, as he won first three games. He played consistently throughout the tournament and played some wonderful games against the top players, including the tournament champion GA Stanny of Karnataka. In last two games he won convincingly from higher rated players to get the third position. Himal has now qualified to represent India in his age category in the International tournaments to be held next year. Naveen Bansal and Vipnesh Bhardwaj, vice-president and secretary, CCA, congratulated Himal. |

100 youths for national dirt racing tournament
Panchkula, November 12 The parade ground has been divided into five corner-curved laps for a flat track racing in which around 80-car racing drivers and bikers participated in the first round. Giving details about the event, Rashid, owner of the Chennai-based Meco Mortor Sports and one of the organisers of the event said the official name of the event is ‘Rolon FMSCI National Dirt Racing Championship’ which focuses on bike racing. “The championship is being organised in the region in which national and international bike racers will be participating. We are more focused on bike racing because many youths are good bikers and the event is being held to judge their talent,” Rashid added. |

Chandigarh, November 12 Seven participating teams Southern Region-I (SR-I), Southern Region-II (SR-II), Eastern Region-I (ER-I), Eastern Region-II (ER-II), North-Eastern Region (NER), Western Region-I (WR-I), Western Region-II (WR-II), Northern Region-I (NR-I) and hosts Northern Region-II (NR-II), besides Corporate Centre (CC) have been divided into two pools. While SR-I, NR-I, ER-I, ER-II and WR-II are in Pool “A”, hosts NR-II along with CC, SR-II, WR-I and NER have been placed in Pool “B”. In other matches, SR-II defeated WR-I 25-23 and 25-19, NER got better of CC 25 -1, 25-14, hosts NR-II, SR-I and WR-II won both the matches of the day. ER-I defeated ER-II 25-23 and 25-19. The only two three set matches were played between ER-I and NR-I, which NR-I ultimately won 22-25, 25-19 and 25-9 and NER and WR-I, which NER ultimately won. Earlier, the championship was inaugurated by SD Joshi, additional general manager, Power Grid. |
