Winged guests start arriving at Asan
Dehradun, November 8 "Rudeey shellduck and northern shoveller have started flocking at Asan, marking the arrival of migratory birds season to the wetland," Raju Kasambe, a keen bird watcher, told The Tribune. Kasambe was recently at Asan to conduct a bird count. He said while the migratory birds had started arriving in Asan, their numbers were expected to pick up in the coming months of the winter season. The Asan Conservation Reserve is home to a large population of rudeey shellduck. Significantly, the some winters back, even the golden eye, recorded its presence and that too after many decades. Birds from as far off as Russia, China and Mongolia having been frequenting the Asan in the past. Barheaded goose, grey leg goose, grey heron, purple heron, comman golden eye, painted sthork comman parakit, common myna, Eurasian wigeon, house crow, black kite, rive lapwing, spotted dove, green sand piper, cattle egreate, comman sandpiper, intermediate egreat, pallas's fish eagle, Indian pond heron, little cormorant, great cormorant, little grebe, great crested grebe, comman morhen, gadwall, red-crested pochard, comman pochard, feuguies pochard, comman teal, tufted duck and comman coot are other birds that have recorded their presence in Asan in the last winter census. Meanwhile, the Forest Department is working hard to make the surroundings at the Asan Lake more amicable to the visiting birds. The Forest authorities also plan to deploy a veterinary officer at Asan at the earliest to monitor any possible unwarranted movement of birds. Uttarakhand Yamuna Circle forest officials had some time back constructed as many as four Eco Huts to promote eco tourism. Two hides for bird watchers have also been constructed. Two artificial lakes have been created at the either side of the dam. In order to attract tourists, two camping sites and track routes have been also constructed at a safe distance from the barrage apart from public inconveniences. Significantly, as part of community participation to the conservation plan, the forest authorities have constituted a committee, which has a representation of local Gram Pradhans and wildlife experts. The local villagers too are being hired as guides. The Asan Conservation Reserve that falls along the Uttarakhand-Himachal border holds much importance from both tourism and conservation point of view. |

UKD stops trains to protest closure of hydel projects
Dehradun, November 8 The party activists, led by party president Trivender Singh Panwar, held back the Dehradun Express for 35 minutes and finally gave in on the request of passengers and the administration. The party is also planning to close the three gates of the Jim Corbett National Park for the same reasons. Panwar reiterated his party’s stand on hydropower projects saying that it was grossly erroneous to close the hydropower projects, especially the Pala Maneri that had already incurred an expenditure to the tune of more than Rs 600 crore. He said the decision would further lead to exodus of youth from the hills in pursuit of employment and hit the economy of the state, which had a big potential to emerge as the power state of the country. Panwar laid stress on opting Gairsain as the capital of the state stating that the capital of the hill state should be made only in the hill region. The party is also observing a dharna at the Gandhi Park here on Tuesday where it will also fix the date to close the gates of the Jim Corbett National Park and main offices of government departments to further activate their movement. |
RSS to stage dharna in state on Nov 10
Dehradun, November 8 Addressing a press conference in Dehradun, RSS Pranth Karyawah, Shashikant Dixit said Uttarakhand would participate in RSS protest programmes across the country aimed at opposing Centre’s persecution of the RSS and backing decisive forces instead. He said it was not proper to link a nationalist and patriotic organisation like the RSS with terror. “It is wrong to blame Hindu organisations for Malegaon, Hyderabad, Samjohta Express and Ajmer Sharif blasts,” Dixit pointed out adding that probe agencies had amply hinted at the involvement of the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and other terror organisations like Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in these incidents. “But there have been malicious attempts to link the RSS with these incidents. Certain members of Hindu organisations have been arrested and they continue to languish in jail even when no charge sheets have been filed in these cases,” Dixit argued. He referred to Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s recent statement linking the RSS to SIMI. He criticised Congress attempts to link the RSS with terror. “There seems to be a gameplan to defame the RSS and the ‘Hindu terror’ word coined by some was only part of this gameplan,” he observed. |
Govt firm to appoint IAS officer at Health Directorate
Dehradun, November 8 The government medical officers have been vociferous opponents of the decision in the past. They had opposed the appointment of IAS officer Piyush Kumar as Director (Administration). They had even lodged protest from time to time but the government now seems unmoved. It has been learnt that the government is contemplating following in the footsteps of the Uttar Pradesh government that has appointed an IAS officer at the directorate. But, office-bearers of the Provincial Medical Services (government doctors’ body) view it as a ploy to clip the wings of the Director General (Health) who is a medico and overseas the administrative needs of the directorate. Surprised at the government’s move to appoint a non-medical professional as Director (Administration), Director General, Health and Family Welfare, DP Joshi, also secretary of the Provincial Medical Services (PMS), said it was a deliberate ploy to undermine the medical profession and foist IAS officers in key positions. “We have been fighting for promotions as per the Tickoo Committee Recommendations, which came our way only after a long fight. Earlier, we were forced to take back our agitation on the assurance that the Director (Administration) will not be appointed, now once again there is a move to do so,” charged Dr Joshi. Earlier Piyush Singh, who is Project Director, National Rural Health Mission, was appointed Director (Administration). |
