Hooda, Chautala joint winners
Chandigarh, November 1 The rally at Sonepat was held by the government to honour CWG medal winners from the state. The Gurgaon rally was an annual event of the INLD to celebrate the birth anniversary of its patron Devi Lal. The party has always held the event on September 25, but this year it chose to hold it Haryana Day. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, or for that matter all speakers, did not touch politics at the Sonepat rally. They confined themselves to sports. On the other hand, it was all politics and populism at the Gurgaon rally. While the INLD rally was dominated by the colour “green”, the white headgear dominated the Sonepat rally. CM announces... INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala converted the event to declare his agenda for the next elections due in 2014. He promised, among other things, wheat at Rs 3 a kg while promising a minimum support price of Rs 1,400 a quintal for wheat. His other promises included an amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act to prohibit same-gotra marriages, a demand made by the notorious khaps. However, he did not tell the audience that if the state assembly approved such an amendment, it cannot be implemented without Presidential assent, which cannot be there without the consent of the Central Government. In a joint statement, Rajinder Singh Pammi and Lakhwinder Singh Lakha, vice-president and general secretary of the media cell of the Haryana Congress, respectively, said: “Chautala’s announcements are like promises made in alluring advertisements, which carry asterisks.” The two Congress leaders said in 1987 Devi Lal had promised to waive off loan of farmers. But after he came to power, only cooperative loans amounting to Rs 10,000, were waived, that too with several in-built conditions. Ditto was the case with the INLD announcements now, they added. |
HSGPC to intensify stir
Karnal, November 1 “Enough is enough. We cannot wait anymore” was the instant reaction of HSGPC president Jagdish Singh Jhinda after the address of Chief Minister at the Sonepat rally, which made no reference to the demand for a separate SGPC for the state. “We had come out of jail after an assurance from the Chief Minister that some announcement in this regard would be made before November 1 and we are feeling cheated,” he said. An urgent meeting of the HSGPC has been convened at Kurukshetra tomorrow to chalk out the future course of action and intensify the stir, he said, adding that it would be a fight to the finish this time. A visibly upset Jhinda refused to divulge the future strategy but made it clear that no assurance or false promise would
deter them from the path of agitation. “It is a betrayal of 19 lakh Sikhs of Haryana who are struggling to free eight major gurdwaras from the control of the Amritsar-based SGPC, and the HSGPC will not rest till the control of these gurdwaras is handed over to the Haryana Sikhs,” he added. Jhinda said the HSGPC had sought the resignation of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar. He announced to burn Makkar’s effigy if he failed to quit. Later, he added that an effigy of Makkar was burnt at Nadda Sahib today. This would continue till November 8 at other major gurdwaras in the state, he added. The HSGPC had taken over control of Chhevin Patshahi Gurdwara at Kurukushetra in September last year but handed it back to the SGPC after a few hours. It again made an attempt to forcibly enter the gurdwara in September this year, but the attempt was foiled by the police, following which activists of the HSGPC blocked rail traffic and launched a “jail bharo” agitation. |
Mothers celebrate birth of girl child
Sirsa, November 1 The “mahakuan pujan” ceremony was organised in the Sirsa Club with the assistance of ADC Pankaj Chaudhary, who has been active in creating awareness against female foeticide ever since she joined here. The “kuan pujan” ceremony is performed in the Jat heartland of Haryana, conventionally on the birth of a son. Tradition has it that praying to the well and at the well, the only source of water in olden times and the lifeline of the village, not only brings good luck for the newborn son, but also earns the blessings of God, in the process ensuring that the next birth in the family, too, is of a son. The ADC has been working for her “Beti Bachao Abhiyan” and has motivated several families to perform such rituals on the birth of the girl child in their families to convey the message that girls are no less than boys. Deputy Commissioner CG Rajini Kaanthan congratulated mothers who attended today’s mahakuan pujan ceremony and said they had shown the way to others. The 161 mothers, who participated in the rituals, went to a nearby temple in procession, where they worshipped the well. Women in their colourful attires danced their way to the temple through the main markets of the town with Pankaj Chaudhary leading the procession. Mothers carried pitchers full of water on their heads, while women volunteers carried their baby girls. “The skewed sex ratio is a cause for concern for our society. If we do not wake up from our slumber, it will be too late,” said Pankaj Chaudhary in her address. “We had six daughters in our extended family, but I was very happy when I gave birth to a daughter recently,” said Sharda, a participant from Rattakhera village. Bimla, another mother from Mallekan village, said people should understand that women were not behind men in any field now. She said women sportspersons from Haryana had recently shown to the world that they, too, were capable of bringing laurels to the nation. The ADC gave certificates to all 161 women, who participated in the “mahakuan pujan” ceremonies. |
Industrial Units in Controlled Area
Panipat, November 1 Only 49 out of 450 industrial units that exist in 14 controlled areas of the district have so far applied to get their units regularised. The policy was introduced in March. The reluctance on the part of industrialists can be attributed to the fact that many units do not even meet the basic norms laid down by the government in the new policy. As per the provisions of the Punjab Scheduled Roads and Controlled Areas (Restriction of Unregulated Development) Act, 1963, the units can face demolition for violating the rules. However, many industrial associations had requested the government to allow these units to continue operations, as their closure would have had a negative impact on the industrial growth of the state. The state government after examining these representations had decided to formulate a policy to regularise the units. As per the policy documents, it was decided that industrial units in all zones except residential zones would be regularised if the units conformed to the technical parameters and the buildings were constructed as per the provisions of the Controlled Areas Restriction of Unregulated Development Rules, 1965. Some of the provisions included were that there should be a 30 m-wide road leading to the unit and there should be at least a distance of 15 feet between the boundary of the unit and the building. The owners were also required to obtain necessary NOCs from the state Pollution Control Board and other departments. The policy was introduced in March and the owners were given three months’ time to submit their applications. However, many units did not meet these specifications and thus never applied for regularisation, said an official in the district Town and Planning Department. So far, only 49 units have applied for regularisation and the units that met the specifications have already been regularised, the officials say. They maintained that it was for the government to decide the fate of the units that were still violating the norms. |

Power Nigam drive against defaulters
Chandigarh, November 1 This was decided at a meeting of the operation review committee chaired by Managing Director, UHBVN, Arun Kumar, here recently. The field officers were directed to ensure that the disconnections were made by removing the supply line from the system. The field officers have been directed to streamline the distribution system in their areas so that uninterrupted power is supplied to the consumers during the festival season.
