Congress trying to play spoilsport: INLD
Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, October 30 Addressing a press conference here today, the secretary-general of the INLD and Dabwali MLA, Ajay Singh Chautala, said the administration in various districts had been asked to divert vehicles, booked by their party, to the Congress rally in Sonepat on the same day. “Vehicles booked by us for our Gurgaon rally are being denied to us on flimsy grounds. Also, all these years and the entire monsoon season the government didn’t think that Gurgaon needed sewers. It is only over the past three days that they decided to get down to digging berms along roads leading to Gurgaon. Their intention is to play spoilsport but they hardly realise that our supporters will battle all odds to reach the venue,” he stated. Accompanied by Kalka MLA Pradeep Chaudhary and other leaders, he accused the government of mixing politics and sports. Claiming that the INLD was the first to announce its decision to honour the mediallists at its rally, Chautala said the Congress, in a hurry, announced a function to honour the players on the same day. “That function has now been converted into a rally. If Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda really wanted to honour only the players, he could have organised a function at his residence like the President and the Prime Minister, but he didn’t do so. That is enough to expose the government’s plan,” Chautala added. Stating that the Congress should have given a bigger amount as prize money, Chautala said the government hardly knew anything about sports or its sportspersons. “A full page advertisement in most newspapers got the players and their sport all wrong. What more can you expect from this government,” he said. He siad as many as 1,500 volunteers of the INLD would be present in a 40-km radius around the rally venue. On the high court order quashing the notification of upgrading the Panchkula Municipal Council to a municipal corporation, Chautala alleged that the government had tried to benefit the land mafia. |

Chak De Haryana: No invite for Selja
Hisar, October 30 Talking to mediapersons here today, Selja revealed that so far she had not received any invitation from the state government to attend the Rai rally. Asked if she would attend it if invited, Selja said she would decide only after she was invited formally. Selja is Haryana’s lone Cabinet minister in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. There have been reports of some serious political differences between her and Hooda. These issues had come to light in the wake of the violence against Dalits in Mirchpur village of the district in April. The Jat lobby in the Haryana Congress had tried to blame the inflexible attitude of the Dalit victims of the violence after the incident on Selja. She was also accused of financing the Dalits who had started a sit-in in New Delhi after the violence. The Union Minister said her presence or absence at the rally was immaterial, but sportspersons from the state should be encouraged in every way. She said the state’s sportspersons would perform even better at the Beijing Asiad next month. Asked whether she too felt that Rohtak and Jhajjar districts were cornering most of the development projects under the Hooda government, Selja said she believed that the entire state should get equitable share of development funds. She said she favoured reservation for Jats in government jobs on “economic basis”. She had been asked to comment on the issue by a mediaperson. She said she wanted the Hisar Gujari Utsav to be revived. In case any organisation came forward to organise it, there would be no dearth of funds for the purpose. Later, addressing members of the District Bar Association, she said lawyers from Hisar had played a big role in the struggle for independence. She paid tributes to Lala Lajpat Rai, who had started his legal career from Hisar. She announced a grant of Rs 11 lakh to the association out of Rajya Sabha MP Ishwar Singh’s MPLAD funds. Earlier, she was felicitated by association chief Kalam Singh. |

Kurukshetra, October 30 The festival marked the silver jubilee of Ratnawali this year and over 3,000 artistes participated in the annual cultural extravaganza. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was the chief guest at the closing function, exhorted students to actively participate in extra-curricular activities as these were the “most powerful mode of self-expression”. “Haryana had a rich folk culture since the vedic era but it was systematically promoted and given a unique identity after Haryana became a full-fledged state in 1966 and Ratnawali, an exclusive cultural festival based on local folk music and dances, was started 25 years ago in 1985 to popularise and preserve the folk art and culture,” he said. Comparing Pt Lakhmi Chand, the famous Saang artiste, with Shakespeare, Hooda said Kurukshetra University was playing an exemplary role in preserving the art of Saang. He said through Saang, Haryanvi artistes communicated the philosophy of life to the common masses in a lucid and anecdotal manner. Hooda said Haryana had become the leading state of the country in the fields of industry, education, sports, infrastructure development and social security, and sportspersons from the state had shown their talent in the Commonwealth Games by winning 15 gold medals. |
Branded milk in demand
Bhanu P Lohumi Tribune News Service
Karnal, October 30 Most of the reputed sweetmeat shops have started preferring packed milk to loose milk, even though it costs more as reports about spurious milk and khoya have made people apprehensive about the quality of milk products. To instill confidence among customers, the sweetmeat shop owners are using double toned and full cream milk to prepare sweets. The price of a packed double toned and full cream milk was Rs 23 per kg and Rs 31 per kg, respectively, while the cost of loose milk was Rs 26 per kg. 10 kg of packed milk yielded 2.5 kg of mawa, while the same volume of loose milk produced 2 kg of mawa, said Vicky, a sweetmeat shop owner on the Minar road. Similarly, 40 kg of packed milk produced 8 kg of cheese while the same quantity of unpacked milk produced 6 kg of cheese. The lurking suspicion in the minds of customers about the quality of milk and milk products is also prompting them to go in for non-milk sweets like “besan ke laddo”, “sohan papri”, “petha” and “kaju barfi”. The prices of most of the non-milk sweets ranged between Rs 60 and Rs 100 per kg while the mawa sweets cost over Rs 180 per kg. The consumption of packed milk has shot up from 1.5 lakh kg to Rs 2 lakh kg per day and Mother Dairy and Lakshya Dairy have been supplying about 60,000 kg and 20,000 kg of milk every day. “It is an irony that pure milk is not available even in the dairy town of Karnal, what to talk of other places,” said an old farmer, who once had a herd of cows and buffaloes. |
