Malhotra heads City Cong unit
: Local Congress leaders Naval Malhotra and Manjit Singh were appointed City Congress president and new rural party president, respectively, here on Monday. Malhotra took charge of the post.

Two hurt in road mishap
: Two persons sustained injuries when a speeding Indica car hit an Innova near Hotel Sepal, here late on Monday evening. Sources said the mishap took place when an Indica (PB03U8009), coming from the Rose Garden side, hit an Innova (PB03S0074), which was taking a turn from Tinkoni to Hotel Sepal. The impact of the accident was so forceful that the Innova turned turtle. Both the vehicles got badly damaged. Acting swiftly, volunteers of Naujwan Welfare Society rushed the injured to Civil Hospital. The injured were identified as Sham Lal and Kulwant Singh.

Quiz contest on ozone layer: The Government Middle School, Fatehpur (Mansa), conducted a quiz contest recently on ‘Saving ozone layer’ as part of one of the activities of its Eco Club. The competition was held as per the guidelines of District Science Supervisor, Secondary Education, Mansa. Karmjit Kaur and Buta Ram of class VIII and Gurjit Kaur of class VII of Sunderlal Bahuguna team clinched the first position while Beant Kaur, Ramandeep Kaur and Sandeep Singh, all from class VIII of Sant Balvir Singh Seechewal group, got the second position. The third position was bagged by Amandeep Kaur and Satnam Singh of class VIII and Arshdeep Kaur of class VII of August Comte group. Ranjodh Singh, Punjabi Master and Eco Club in-charge, said the competition was held to create awareness about ill-effects of straw burning among students besides ways to save the ozone layer. Deepinder Kaur, PTI and Lakha Singh, head of the school, encouraged the students to make efforts to preserve ecology.

Black Arrow celebrates Raising Day
: The Black Arrow Brigade celebrated its 41st Raising Day with traditional solemnity here. The celebrations started with a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial. The brigade was raised in 1969 by Brig Kaushal Kishore Kaul. It participated in operations on October 13, 1971, under the leadership to Brig (later General) A.S. Vaidya. Its 35 soldiers sacrificed their lives for their motherland. The unprecedented valour of the troops of the brigade earned them 70 gallantry awards which included one Param Vir Chakra and five Mahavir Chakras.

Migrant labourer commits suicide
: Bihari migrant Labourer Baby (28), mother of three, reportedly committed suicide in her house in Pipa Rangi here on Monday. Domestic quarrel between her and husband Kanyia was said to be the cause of suicide. The police has registered a case and sent the body to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

: The Chandigarh administration has recommended the name of VK Singh, an IAS officer of the 1990 batch, and currently serving as managing director of Punjab Milkfed, for the post of UT Finance Secretary to the Central Government.

Zirakpur
Child killed in mishap
: An unidentified child was killed when he was run over by an unknown vehicle on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway near High Grounds here this afternoon. The child was found lying unconscious on the road around 1.30 pm. A passerby informed the police about the incident. The child was taken to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh, where he was declared dead on arrival. The body of the victim has been kept for identification at the hospital for 72 hours.

Orientation ceremony
: The PKR Jain College of Education, Ambala City, held its orientation ceremony on Monday. Principal Mudita Bhatnagar apprised the students of the college guidelines and regulations, which need to be followed by all students. She stressed on the need of having 75 per cent attendance. Management committee president Bharat Bhushan Jain, vice-president Bhushan Jain, secretary Rajesh Jain and manager Umesh Jain were present on the occasion.

Complete ban on poly bags
: In yet another environment-friendly step, the state government has decided to impose a complete ban on the use of polythene bags in the state. An official spokesman said a proposal to this effect had been approved by the CM The ban was not proposed to be imposed on the use of plastic for packing material, which would be considered in due course of time.

Awareness  on AIDS
: In a bid to create awareness on AIDS among people, lectures were delivered by a team of doctors in the “Red Ribbon Express Train”. The police personnel, Army officials, health workers, including aanganwari workers and ANMs, attended the programme. Dr Bharat Bhushan from the Civil Hospital, Kalka, said various methods to enhance immunity were discussed during the session. Dr Jawahar Lal Goel, Dr Devender Uppal , Dr Shyam Lal Kapoor, Dr Dinesh Sharma, Dr Amit Arya, Dr Monica Matav and Dr Jintender were present on the occasion.
