Suspecting character, boy shoots at sister
New Delhi, October 18 According to Chhaya Sharma, DCP (Outer), Ansih was arrested yesterday evening when he returned to his village in order to arrange money. "During interrogation, Anish disclosed that he doubted the character of his sister Nameeta and even tried to alert her husband, but in vain. He said when his sister did not pay any heed to his advice, he was forced to take the drastic step. He arranged a country-made revolver and five cartridges from Loni (UP) and fired at his sister," said Sharma. Initially, the family tried to hoodwink the police and said Nameeta was accidentally shot when she came to rescue Anish who was having a fight with two of his friends. Even Vinesh (Nameeta and Anish's younger brother and an eyewitness of the incident) told the police that two boys came to their house on a motor cycle and started quarreling with Anish, and when Nameeta came to rescue Anish, one of them fired at her from a country-made firearm. "However, when Vinesh was questioned thoroughly, he changed his statements. Finally, when he was questioned in the presence of his parents, the police got to know that it was Anish who shot at Nameeta because he suspected her character," said Sharma, adding that later Nameeta also corroborated the version and stated that Anish had fired at her. |

There was no complaint from people about public transport system during the Games. A total of 1,600 Blueline buses were banned in urban areas of the city during the event. The Delhi transport Corporation (DTC) has 6,400 low-floor buses, including the air-conditioned ones. Besides, 574 buses meant for sportspersons will also be included in the DTC fleet. After the meeting, Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely told media personnel that 1,600 Blueline buses, which were pulled off roads on Games routes and New Delhi areas, would remain so till October 25. A decision on them will be taken only after that. The government wants to phase out Blueline buses. A total of 3,000 buses have already been phased out. While the government was phasing out the remaining buses, transport operators had got stay order from the Delhi High Court. Now, for further action, the government will have to get the stay order lifted. According to sources, the government is planning to go to the court to get the stay order lifted. Once the order is lifted, the remaining Blueline buses will be phased out. The government may phase out all Blueline buses in one go. Delhi has a total of 2,800 Blueline buses. |

‘Snoring can cause heart, neuro disorders’
New Delhi, October 18 Caused due to cessation in breathing, the sleep disorder is known as 'sleep apnea' which if not corrected timely could cause cardiac attacks, vascular ailments and neurological disorders, say doctors. "It occurs due to disruption in the airway or driving stimulus from the brain. It may either be called obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea which cause numerous respiratory and neural problems," said Dr M.V. Padma, senior neurologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Sleep is often neglected and many do not realise the problem till the complications start showing, she added. According to experts, snoring (moderate to heavy) is only seen as a discomfort to the bed partner, who witnesses intermittent episodes of breathing during sleep. "The condition manifests itself in breathing difficulty as oxygen level goes down and Carbon dioxide piles up in the brain. The partner is annoyed by the brief period of silence in breathing, failing to realise that the condition calls for urgent medication," said Dr R.K. Mani, department of pulmonology, critical care and sleep medicine Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon. The problem starts usually after 40 years but people of all age group have been found to be suffering from it. However, 99 per cent remain ignorant about their status, point out doctors. Given the absence of a systematic study, there is no specific data on its prevalence in the country. The pathology of the disease differs and factors like - obesity, chronic ailments and alcoholism contribute to its severity. "It affects all, elders as well as children. Those who are fat, obese with thick neck and big abdominal girth are the most prone, while smokers, diabetics and heart patients are also seen to be suffering from it," said Dr Padma. It is believed that sleep apnea and hypertension is co-related and given the fact that men outnumber women in diabetes and cardiac-related ailments, the disease's preponderance is more in the former than the latter. |
DU asks AREB to lift ban
on mild radiation sources
New Delhi, October 18 After repeated written requests from teachers and students, the university has requested the AREB to lift the ban on at least on mild sources of radiation. The ban was imposed last month, after the university had failed to submit its final reply on the radiation exposure incident at Mayapuri scrap yard in Delhi within the time-frame. The ban bars use of even mild radioactive sources which are harmless. Physics and chemistry department teachers argue that as much as 80 per cent of radioactive sources required in practical modules are mild and harmless and can be used following the basic precautions. "The entire course will be affected. In 60 per cent cases, radioactive substances required for reactions are harmless. If we resort to an alternative method to conduct experiments outside the university, the quality will suffer," said one of the professors teaching nuclear physics module in M.Tech. Looking at the damage that the ban will bring for research students, the university departments have already started getting their act together. Apart from security measures being put in place, a three-member panel has also been formed to look into the report prepared by the committee into the radiation fiasco. Recently, Dr A.K. Bakshi, head of the department of chemistry, and the university registrar met AERB officials and handed over the much delayed report on the Cobalt-60 incident prepared by a three-member committee. "The AERB has asked us to transfer radioactive substances that are not in use, besides, handing over to them a list, classifying the materials in the department's possession," Prof Bakshi said. He said while the department was hopeful that the ban on weak sources would be lifted, the use of X-rays and other strong sources would be stopped till the AERB is satisfied with the measures put in place by the university. Confirming the university's move, vice-chancellor Deepak Pental said, "We have written to the AREB and are hopeful that our request will be looked into. The AREB is sensitive to the university's needs for holding practical tests and research in M.Sc courses." Pental said, "As of now, we need not jump to any conclusion. The strong sources would have to be put away for some more time, but yes looking at the need of the hour, the association might agree on allowing mild sources, temporarily." |
