Red Cross Society meet held:
A meeting of the executive committee of the District Red Cross Society (DRCS) and its allied branches, St. John Association and Hospital Welfare Section, was held under the chairmanship of additional deputy commissioner-cum-senior vice-president of the DRCS Upjeet Singh Brar here on Thursday. Secretary of the DRCS JR Goyal said the meeting decided to explore more resources to generate more income for running various projects.

Drawing, handwriting contest: Sanawar, an institute for children, Malout road, participated in the All-India drawing and handwriting Contest 2010 organised by the Akhil Bhartiya Nagrik Vikas Kendra, Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The results were announced on Thursday. Ashman (UKG), Dheerani (I), Poonam (VI), Divya (IX) bagged kalaratna award in drawing contest. In handwriting, Harjot Kaur (LKG) bagged a cash award of Rs 500 (consolation prize) along with the Kalaratna award. Mehak (II), Heavenpreet Kaur (III), Simran Sharma (IV), Ravneet Kaur (V) got Kalaratna award in handwriting contest. Principal Ravinder Kaur congratulated the students.

Fiscal conclave: Fiscal Conclave 2010 organised by North West Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dhudike, on October 12 was inaugurated by S. Prabhpreet Singn Gill, managing director of North West Institution of Engineering and Technology and heads of various companies like HDFC, IDBI, IWinStar and HSBC. Guests were honoured by the MD and principal Dr IK Garg.

World Mental Health week
: The District Legal Services Authority in association with Sher-e-Punjab Sports Club and Youth Welfare Club held a seminar to mark the World Mental Health Week at village Noorpur Sethan. Civil judge Laxman Singh, ADA Navneet Gupta, president, District Bar Association, KD Syal, BDPO Gurmit Singh apprised the public of fee legal services available for the mentally retarded persons.

Shooting range:
Avinash Rai Khanna, MP, on Thursday gave a cheque for Rs 2 lakh to the Nawanshahr District Rifle Shooting Association for the construction of a shooting range at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pojewal, in the district.

Workshop organised: With a view to making the teaching and learning process innovative, practical, easy and interesting for the students to understand the concepts in the subject of physics, the Kirpal Sagar Academy, in collaboration with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), Punjab and Jammu and Kasmir region, organised a workshop on Wednesday. Dr Karamjit Singh, chairman, inaugurated the workshop and Prof R.C. Verma (Punjabi University, Patiala), region president, IAPT, presided over the workshop, which was attended by 250 students and 50 teachers.

Verma heads IAPT: While Prof R.C. Verma and Prof Vijay Mittal of Punjabi University, Patiala, were elected president and secretary, respectively, of the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) Region Council 2, Rajesh Chandel, vice-principal, Kirpal Sagar Academy, near Rahon, was elected vice-president. Besides, Prof S.S. Kaul (SN College, Banga) and Kuldip Singh, Additional District Science Supervisor, Nawanshahr, have been made executive members of the IAPT.

82 units of blood donated:
A blood donation camp was organised at MM Modi College, Patiala, on Thursday. The camp was organised by the NSS units in association with the Red Ribbion Express Club. It was sponsored by the State Bank of Patiala. Around 82 units of blood were donated.

Fake currency seized:
Fake Indian currency worth Rs 11,000 has been seized from Gurpreet Singh of Dhotian village by the Sarhali police. SSP Preetpal Singh Virk said here on Wednesday that the accused had been facing such charges previously too. A case under sections 489 A, B and C had been registered against the accused, said the SSP.

Foundation day:
To mark the fourth foundation day of National Institute of Paramedical Sciences (NIPS), a blood donation camp was organised. Prof A Rajwanshi, in charge NIPS, and RK Sharma, manager, State Bank of India, PGI branch, inaugurated the camp. Professor Rajwanshi said eight more regional institutes of paramedical sciences would come up shortly in the country. Prof KK Talwar, director, PGIMER, was the chief guest. A poster making competition was organised by paramedical students. Theme for the competition was “Voluntary blood donation”. A rangoli competition on Commonwealth Games was also held at Zakir Hall.

Lecture: The Durga Das Foundation is all set to organise a 10-day “Hip Hop” workshop from October 18 to 29. Lectures will be delivered by Joseph Nantanovan from the USA. Stone laid: The foundation stone of “Vaibhav Herbal Park” was laid at Government Senior Secondary School, Raipur Khurd, here on Wednesday. DPI (S) PK Sharma was the chief guest. DEO Chanchal Singh, Deputy DEO Ram Kumar Sharma, and conservator of forests (IFS) Santosh Kumar were among the special invitees. Principals and heads of various schools were present at the function. School head RK Sharma proposed the vote of thanks.

100 patients examined:
Around 100 patients were examined at a special health camp organised by Fortis Hospital, Mohali, on the occasion of World Spirometry Day. Spirometry testing is the most accurate way to reassure people that their lungs are healthy or to identify any potential danger. Lung disease is rapidly becoming the third biggest cause of deaths worldwide.

5 held for murder:
The police has arrested five persons in connection with the sensational murder of a businessman, Dev Raj Lohia, at Hansi, near here, a few months ago. The accused have been identified as the mastermind, Daljit, and his four accomplices - Sunil Panghal, Rajesh, Jaggu and Sandeep. Police sources said four pistols had been seized from them. They had sought ransom from Lohia and had shot him dead when he refused to pay it.
