Contraband Seizure Case
Chandigarh, September 13 Prithi Singh, a retired assistant sub-inspector (ASI), confirmed this during his cross-examination in the contraband recovery case against accused Rani. The police had arrested the accused near Sector 24 on August 22, 2006. He stated that the accused, who was holding a bag, tried to turn away on seeing the police. On suspicion, a search was conducted on her by the police and six boxes containing 10 injections of Buprenorphine and Norophine, were seized. During cross-examination, the police officer admitted to having conducted physical search of the accused on the road in the presence of other police officials. He added that it was wrong to suggest that he had outraged the modesty of the accused by conducting a physical search and that he had conducted the search against the rules. The CrPC clearly stipulates that the physical search of any woman suspect has to be conducted by a woman police official. The defence lawyer said: “The police officer has outraged the modesty of the accused by conducting her physical search. 2 booked for brawl at mall
Chandigarh, September 13 The police, on the other hand, claimed that it had conducted a fair probe into the matter and taken appropriate action against the accused, who had assaulted the security guards. The police arrested Sukhjit Singh, a Patiala-based property dealer, and his cousin Kulwinder Singh for causing hurt, criminal intimidation and common intention on a complaint lodged by Satish Kumar, a resident of Kishangarh village, who works as a security guard at the mall. The police said Satish sustained injuries in the assault. Sukhjit’s wife Preeti told the TNS that her husband suffered a head injury after being hit with an iron bar and had to receive stitches. She said she along with her husband and brother-in-law came out of the hall after watching a movie and accidentally went to a restricted area. A security guard caught hold of her from shoulder and pushed her back, while preventing her from going there. Offended by the behaviour of the guard, Sukhjit confronted him, which led to an argument. Other guards posted there joined their colleague and assaulted her husband. One of the guards hit her husband with an iron bar. Seeing commotion, people assembled at the scene and intervened. Preeti alleged that the police refused to receive her complaint. Suraj Mukhi Sharma, owner of a Sector 30-based advertisement agency, said he saw some security guards thrash a man, who was bleeding from his head. He called the police, which later arrived at the scene. The security guards and their manager removed the blood stained iron bar from the scene in the presence of the police, he claimed. Sharma, who took up the issue with the UT IGP, in his letter said: “The mall staff used everything in their power to manipulate the situation to their advantage. If such an incident can go unnoticed, these people can go to any extent to outrage the modesty of the common man.” The SHO said the accused were remanded in judicial custody. He refuted the allegations of acting in a biased manner, saying it was commonplace to hear such allegations against the police from the accused. |
