MPG College students council elections cancelled
Mussoorie, September 4 The ongoing dispute over the election process at MPG College took an ugly turn yesterday due to the furore created by NSUI students. Activists of the outfit tore the original documents of not only their rivals, but their own candidates after snatching these from the hands of election officials at MPG College. In response, the college administration in a late-night meeting decided to cancel the poll process and begin afresh. Taking a strict stand, the college administration today refused entry to students without identification. Angered with the decision, students affiliated with the NSUI gathered in large numbers at the college gate and started banging the grill. Police personnel Sashi Kant Lakhera was injured when his fingers got stuck in the grill. NSUI leaders alleged that the administration was acting partisan by keeping their supporters away from the college. They claimed that ABVP supporters were entering the campus without hindrance while NSUI students were being blocked. They raised slogans against the college administration and were pacified only after police intervention. Meanwhile, ABVP students burnt the effigy of MPG College Principal at Kingcraig and demanded the speeding up of the election process. Supporters of the Aryan group and the AISF came out in support of ABVP students and joined the protest. ABVP students also banged on the college gates and were stopped from entering the college by the police. Mussoorie SDM Manoj Kumar took stock of the situation and held a closed-door meeting with election officials. It was decided that legal advice would be sought and fresh election dates would be decided on Monday. The SDM speaking to The Tribune said a case had been registered against Anuj Gupta, Manuj Agarwal and 50 others for manhandling election officers and tearing original papers yesterday. Anuj Gupta, named in the FIR filed by the college administration, is the son of Palika Ward member Jai Kumar Gupta who has an allegiance with the BJP. Jai Kumar Gupta, when contacted, said this was petty politics and the name of his son had been dragged in the controversy unnecessarily. Palika President OP Uniyal, who belongs to the BJP and is also an ex-officio chairman of MPG College, speaking to mediapersons said the incident was unfortunate and students should have behaved properly with college teachers. He, however, said the teachers should forgive the erring students after due apology and conduct the elections in a peaceful manner. ABVP supporters are angered at this stand of the Palika president and said he should keep away from college politics. Circle Officer, Mussoorie, Swati Chaubey also visited the college campus to take stock of the situation. |
Bar NSUI from poll for 5 yrs: ABVP
Mussoorie, September 4 In a press statement today, ABVP presidential candidate Ashok Nautiyal said they condemned the tearing of original documents of candidates and indecent behaviour shown by the NSUI supporters during the nomination process yesterday. Nautiyal demanded that the students involved in the act should be barred from fighting election for five years. He added that as the election process had got under way with the announcement of the election date, the cancelling of elections had no legal binding. He said that they wanted the election to be held according to the announced schedule. If it was not done, it would be a breach of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations for which the college administration would be responsible. The student wing of the AISF in a press note condemned yesterday’s incidents. The AISF opined that such incidents were damaging the peaceful environment of the college. Organisation secretary Mahavir Semwal said the organisation responsible should be banned from contesting elections so that these acts are not repeated. Anil Juyal, Firoz, Sandeep Chaudhry, Manjeeta and Ranveer were present on the occasion. |

Deploy teachers in schools, demand Almora residents
Nainital, September 4 Residents of a couple of villages in Almora resorted to an agitation demanding deployment of teachers in the schools that have been opened there. The move of the villagers has the support of the local Member of Parliament Pradeep Tamta who has attacked the state government for not doing anything to improve the education standard in the far-flung areas of Uttarakhand. The residents of Rainka Bhetabadoli and Chamtola village are up in arms against the state administration and have started an agitation demanding deployment of teachers in the villages. For the past one-and-a-half months, they have been running from one office to another, but to no avail. Tamta visited the agitators on Friday and offered his support and said the state government was hell bent on damaging the education set-up in the state. Talking to The Tribune, Tamta said, “This is some kind of a joke. About 39 schools and inter-colleges in my constituency alone are facing staff crunch. The state government has introduced science subjects in some schools where there are no science teachers. Most schools do not have a Principal or clerical staff. They are simply playing with the future of children”. He further attacked the state government for not having a clear-cut transfer or education policy. “They claim to have transferred a large number of teachers recently to schools in interior areas, but these teachers are no where to be seen. They are neither appointing new teachers and nor promoting the ones recruited earlier. In the entire process, it is the students that are suffering,” he pointed. Tamta also said the recruitments which the state government claimed to have made was actually done during the regime of former Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari, but their appointment letters had not been issued then. The state government has been drawing flak for its failure to deploy teachers in several schools and its failure to come up with a transparent transfer policy for teachers. The transfers of teachers in the state has been a controversial issue for quite some time and the state government has not come out with a clear stance on the issue till now. Top shots in the government have been trying to evade the issue whenever confronted by the media. |

Students showcase co-curricular skills on Activity Day
Haridwar, September 4 A wide range of activities were held with students divided into four groups, namely Vyas, Sandipani, Drone and Vashishtha Houses. The most exciting event was the open democratic debate that saw participants speaking on varied topics on the lines of Parliament debate. The views of the participants amazed everyone with their extempore debate and got a standing ovation after the completion of their speech. Particularly Ishanka Dimri and Poorva Naswa drew the attention with their eloquent vocabulary, topics, thoughts and quotes. Eventually the judges adjudged both contestants joint winners of the competition. In declamation contest, Apporva Bhatnagar and Divyanand were adjudged first two winning contestants for perfectly delivering their speech. Attributing their achievement to the guidance by teachers and the academic, healthy, disciplined and spiritual environment the school provides, both Ishanka and Poorva said now they wanted to make the school proud by winning contests at the state level. Judges again were in a dilemma as the neat calligraphic copies of students made it difficult for them to judge the winner. Eventually, Anchal Sharma of Class V was declared the winner, while Simran came as runner-up and Avinash Bhatia as the second runner-up. In a quiz contest, Vashishtha House bagged the first position followed closely by Vyas House. Following them were the teams of Sandipini House and Drona House. A refreshing display of fancy dresses by tiny tots of Swa Veda Play Group provided a kaleidoscopic look to the day with some kids attired in mythological characters of Lord Shiva, Hanuman and saints, while some dressed as politicians, film stars, sporting icons and also in animal dresses. But most of the students dressed up as Lord Krishna and Radha as Janmashtami has just got over. |
