Six teachers suspended
Reason: Dereliction of duty

In a major development, ADC (development) Davinder Singh suspended six ETT teachers for dereliction of duty. The action was taken after 23 girl students, who were ferried in a pick-up van, met with an accident on August 30 near Keelee Chahlan village near Jagroan.

More dengue cases come to light
Ludhiana, September 3
With 13 positive dengue fever cases reported from the district in the city’s privately run hospitals, the disease appears to be spreading fast. In addition, 35 dengue patients from other districts in Punjab including Bathinda, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Mansa and Kapurthala are undergoing treatment at Christian Medical College & Hospital, SPS Apollo Hospital and Dayanand Medical College & Hospital.

Land mafia eyes Mandi Board vacant land
Ludhiana, September 3
A chunk of prime land on Humbran Road, which belongs to the Punjab Mandi Board, has been turned into a huge garbage dump, creating a major health hazard for area residents. The vacant land, spread over ten acres and currently valued at about Rs 50 crore, has also become a safe haven for groups of nomads who have settled down here with their herds of cattle and even set up a few shanties.

Vehicles on rooftop pose danger
Ludhiana, September 3
The vehicles which have been parked on the rooftop of shops located near the Division No 4 police station are posing a danger to shopkeepers in the area. The shopkeepers have complained that the police has parked these case property vehicles on the roof of the police station and adjoining shops.

Powercom penalised Rs 3.90 lakh
Ludhiana, September 3
The Permanent Lok Adalat (PLA) has ordered the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (Powercom) to refund Rs 3,91,787 charged in excess from a complainant while billing. Permanent Lok-Adalat chairman Sukhdarshan Singh Khaira and its members R S Khokar, Nand Lal also ordered Powercom to pay Rs 2,000, as compensation for harassment caused to the complainant.

College teachers for action against DPI staff

The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Association has demanded action against officials at the directorate of public instructions (DPI) (colleges) office, Chandigarh, who, according to the outfit, had been putting off the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission on flimsy grounds.

GTB School bag overall trophy
Ludhiana, September 3
The students of GTB School, Khanna, bagged the overall trophy, while Bhartiya Vidya Mandir (BVM) Senior Secondary School, Kitchlu Nagar branch, Ludhiana, finished as runner-up in the Hero Honda Ludhiana District Inter-School Athletics Meet held at Guru Nanak Stadium here yesterday. Nav Bharat School, Ludhiana, secured the third position.

Commuters furious at toll hike

The dilapidated condition of NH1 is evident from the small and big potholes, which have become a permanent feature of one of the busiest highways in the state. But what has added to the annoyance of the commuters is the repeated hike in the toll rates. The toll authorities have not done anything worth while for the ease, security and safety of the commuters on the already existing toll road.

Encroachment removed from Humbran Road

High drama was witnessed today when the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation team went to demolish illegal encroachment at Humbran road. The 4.5 acre land worth several crores was illegally possessed by a person named Baldhir Singh for the past 15 years.

The historic meeting of Guru Gobind Singh with Baba Banda Singh Bahadur (then Madho Das Bairagi) on the banks of the Godavari on September 3, 1708, which paved way for the saint to turn into a soldier and take onto the might of Moghul empire, will be observed as “Milap Diwas” at Nanded Sahib in Maharashtra from September 7 to 9.

Visually impaired man gets vision, pledges eyes

This cager wants promotion of sports in Valley

Away from the political crises and stone pelting of the Kashmir valley, this 18-year-old cager is finding his "freedom" at the basketball court in Guru Nanak Stadium. Atif Khan, a resident of Srinagar, who came here a month ago to meet his doctor brother, is currently spending his whole day in the basketball court. "It just happened by chance, I came here in the beginning of August to spend some time with my brother. He knows my love for basketball and told me about the NBA basketball league. I requested the authorities to give me a chance and since then I am here," said Atif Khan.

Punjabi film industry gets its first woman film director

Punjabi cinema got its first female director Ish Amitoj Kaur with the release of her movie "Cheevan Dariya". She has also worked as an assistant director to renowned director of Punjabi films Manmohan Singh. On a promotional tour for her film along with singer-actor Lakhwinder Wadali Ish Amitoj said the movie gave a true picture of Punjab. Although she is living in the USA she is still very close to her motherland and wants to give a social message through her film.

Experts to dwell on aspects of pelvic surgery

Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here is organising a “pelvic and acetabular” course on September 5.

The trio obtained 81, 73.75 and 73.5 per cent marks, respectively.

“Yaadein Ishmeet Ki” was organised by Ishmeet Singh Foundation on the eve of 22nd birth anniversary of Voice of India fame Ishmeet Singh at the Guru Nanak Bhawan last evening. The programme started with the lightning of a lamp by different dignitaries. In the opening remark, State Bank of India assistant general manager Tarun Sood paid homage to Ishmeet. Rupali Chhabra (finalist, Voice of Punjab, PTC) started with shabad recitation “Mera maat pita har raia” and later artistes of X-factor Studio gave mesmerising performance on Ishmeet’s song “Shukriya”.

Bhattal’s son-in-law appointed member of PPCC
Ludhiana, September 3
Vikram Bajwa, son-in-law of former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal soon after being appointed as a member the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, said if the Congress came to power in the next term they would increase the pace of the development work being carried out in the state. Bajwa has been appointed as a member by All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi, and has been given the charge of Sanhewal.

‘Contribute liberally to PM’s relief fund’

In order to help Leh victims, the Panjabi Sahitya Akademi, Ludhiana, today appealed to writers, industrialists, businessmen and philanthropists to liberally contribute to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, New Delhi, by draft/crossed cheque or in cash against regular receipt to be issued by the akademi.

The comptroller, PAU, Ludhiana, vide his letter dated April 4, had intimated all deans/directors, officials, heads of departments and drawing and disbursement officials of PAU that the Vice-Chancellor, PAU, had approved the grant of benefits to retirees.
