Easy win for Mukesh
Chandigarh, September 3 Finishing one stroke behind the seasoned golfer were Chandigarh’s Harendra P Gupta and Gaurav Pratap Singh of Noida who tied for the second slot at seven under 281. On a day when even par scores were on ration, Shamim Khan (Delhi) carded the day’s best of two under 70. Three others managed an under par score of 71. The hovering clouds threatened to upset the last round of the tournament. But the organisers continued with the game after an interruption of one hour and 15 minutes due to the heavy showers. Mukesh Kumar (70-67-70-73) pocketed the winner’s cheque for Rs 4,04,125. The win also saw him climb up to the spot in the Rolex Rankings Order of Merit. Overnight joint leader Vinod Kumar was no where in contention today. Gone was that fiery image of yesterday. On the other hand Mukesh steadied himself after bogeying the first hole. An excellent five-iron tee shot on the par-3 third landed a few inches from the pin resulting in a birdie. He sank two more birdies on the seventh and eighth before bogeying the ninth to be one under 35 at the turn. Mukesh maintained a steady lead of three strokes till the 15th. But then he bogeyed the last three holes because of some poor putting. As luck would have it Gaurav Pratap Singh also bogeyed the 17th finishing the chance of a playoff. Mukesh, the overnight joint leader, started with a bogey on the first, but pulled it back with an excellent five-iron tee shot on the third that landed a few inches from the pin and led to a birdie. He seemed to be sailing to an easy win after he made birdie-birdie-bogey on the seventh, eighth and ninth. It was at this stage that the other contenders Vinod Kumar and Harendra Gupta had slipped down the leaderboard after dropping a few strokes. Gaurav Pratap Singh, on the other hand, was still three strokes behind the leader. Mukesh said: “I started poorly with a bogey on the opening hole and then played it safe to maintain my lead. The three birdies on the front nine were crucial as Vinod, Harendra and Gaurav were struggling to raise their game at that stage and did not look as if they would catch up with me.” “his is an important win as it puts me on top of the Rolex Rankings and gives me a huge boost ahead of the crucial second half of the season,” dded Mukesh. Gaurav Pratap Singh (68-71-70-72) made two birdies against two bogeys in his final round to post a tied second finish, along with Harendra Gupta (69-69-70-73).
