Bathinda, August 14
Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today assured Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal that he would sanction a cancer treatment unit for the Malwa region of Punjab that was having an abnormal incidence of the disease.

Azad gave the assurance when Sukhbir Singh Badal accompanied by his wife and MP Harsimrat Kaur called on him and sought a super specialty cancer research and treatment centre, preferably in Mansa.

The Deputy CM pointed out to Azad that Bathinda region has become the epicentre of cancer. He pointed out that farmers of Malwa region, in order to provide more food grains to national kitty, used urea and chemical fertilizers over the years that has not only led to continuous soil erosion but had also led to more severe problem of contamination of water in the entire belt.

Presenting a grim picture of water pollution in the Malwa region, Harsimrat Kaur pointed out that the groundwater was acutely infested with nitrate pollution and in the absence of potable drinking water, villagers were forced to drink impure water that was not fit for human consumption.

She pointed out that researchers have found carcinogenic residue in the blood of Punjab farmers and also in breast milk of the nursing mothers of that area. She brought to the notice of Azad that incidence of very high levels of uranium concentration had been found in the hair samples of children. Besides, uranium, lead, cadmium, strontium and barium were also found in the samples. Bathinda was facing a very critical environment problem that was leading to an abnormally high incidence of cancer and over 1089 people had died of cancer in the last three years.

The Deputy CM said that due to the absence of diagnostic facilities or cure, poor patients either go to Bikaner or Chandigarh for detection and treatment.

He urged Azad that a super specialty cancer research and treatment centre may be set up in Mansa under the National Cancer Programme. He said that this institute could be set up in the existing civil hospital.

They also sought relaxation of rules for not considering as damaged rice that was partially or pinpoint blackened.

Wait over, ROB to be opened tomorrow

Bathinda, August 14
After a delay of about two years, finally, the much hyped railway overbridge (ROB) located over the Bathinda-Patiala crossing is going to be dedicated to the public on Monday. The ROB, connecting Bathinda with Mansa and Dabwali, is reportedly the first ever ROB in the country, which will have an elevated rotary over it.

Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is scheduled to inaugurate the ROB on Monday, which will be followed by a public meeting.

The construction work for the ROB started on November 17, 2006, during the previous Congress regime. Later, with the change of government, the work got stuck among the political and administrative issues.

Though the work under the PWD was resumed, the portion above the railway track, which was the work of the railway authorities, kept on delaying. Among the reasons for the delay cited at times, a major reason was the non-completion of the tender process.

However, after wading through all the hurdles, the flyover was completed on July 31 this year. Despite knowing that the alternate route (diversion from Hazi Rattan chowk) was creating problems for all, the district administration preferred to wait for Sukhbir Badal to spare time to dedicate it to the public.

Receiving information about the official's strategy, people from all sections started blaming the administration for harassing them by causing unwanted delay. About a few days back, some activists of the Congress attempted to open it for the public with tractors and JCB machines, but the police defused their move.

According to details collected from the officials of PWD (B&R), the length of the flyover is 1.385 km, which comprised of 350 metres towards Dabwali, 386 metres towards Mansa and about 650 metres towards Bathinda from the rotary over it. The total cost of project is an estimated Rs 36.70 crore including an amount of about Rs 3.40 crore borne by the railway authorities for the area constructed by them.

Bathinda, August 14
Within a couple of months after its completion, the multi-crore four-lane Bathinda-Goniana road, which was projected as a prestigious development endeavour for the city, has lost its sheen.

Thanks to the administration being in deep slumber, the nuisance makers, especially motor mechanics who have made the road and pavements as their garage, create a hurdle in the smooth flow of traffic. Besides, they have damaged the pavements also which were constructed with special interlocking tiles.

If a pedestrian wants to walk over the pavements, he does not find a few feet of clear stretch as almost every auto repair worker is rampantly using the pavement as a place for commercial activities.

Some of the mechanics, who have a large number of customers, use the main road itself as their open garage. Showing no consideration for the traffic snarls that it causes, such violators (mechanics) carry on the illegal activity even in the presence of traffic cops.

Ironically, the official vehicles of senior functionaries of the district too can be seen being repaired on the road.

During a random survey of the road, it was observed that the stretch between Hanuman chowk and Tinkoni T-point is a major problematic spot. Besides the encroachments, it was also observed that mechanics did not mind driving the cars on the wrong side of the road, causing a high risk of accident for all.

One such mechanic Paramjeet Singh said, “Till date, no one asked us to stop using the road and pavement. Moreover, it is not an encroachment. The pavement is a gifted space of four to five feet, which makes an addition to our dinghy shops to facilitate us.”
