Essay-writing: The First Friday Forum has invited entries for an essay-writing contest on “architecture, journalism and architectural journalism” by August 10. Launched: Anti Crime Anti Corruption Cell (ACAC), a non-government organisation (NGO), to prevent crime and corruption is launched in the city here on Thursday. Jagdish Singh Diwan, national president of the ACAC, said the aim was to prevent crime and corruption by spreading awareness among people. They would also spread awareness about honour killing, traffic violations and other menaces like female
foeticide.

Theft Cases: Another gang member surrenders: In a related development to the recent arrest of a gang of youngsters, who graduated from committing petty thefts to heinous crimes and used their juvenile status to escape harsh punishment, another suspect in the case today landed in judicial custody. The suspect, identified as Shine, who is wanted in the snatching case today surrendered in the Kurali court. Several cases of vehicle thefts and snatching in Kurali, Ludhiana, Patiala, Panchkula and Chandigarh have been traced to the gang. The police is hopeful that once Shine was questioned, other crimes committed in the past would be revealed.

Fire at shop: Furniture and other goods worth lakhs were gutted at the Kalgidhar Enclave market here on Wednesday night. A fire tender from Dera Bassi was pressed into service. It took two hours to bring the fire under control. Fire officer BS Sandhu said the fire might have been caused due to a short circuit as there was no fire safety system at the showroom.

Names shortlisted for deputation: The Haryana government has finalised names of four HCS officers for deputation to the Chandigarh administration. According to sources, the officers who will be on deputation to the administration include Mahavir
Kaushik, Lalit Kumar, Maheshwar Sharma and Tilak Raj. They are among 12 officers, who were shortlisted by the government for deputation to the administration. The administration is already facing acute shortage of the officers from Haryana with more three

Canter falls into khud: A canter (HR-45A-4362), which was on its way to Solan from Nilokheri, Haryana, fell into a khud opposite forest complex, Pinjore. According to the police, driver of the canter Om Parkash, who had a narrow escape, has been booked under the Motor Vehicle Act.
