Lakhwar-Vyasi project work to begin soon
Mussoorie, July 7 Thapliyal said right now the clearance had been sought for the 120-MW Vyasi phase of the hydel project and the tender process would begin presumably after three months. He also said the NHPC had already received the environmental clearance for the project. Speaking on the Lakhwar part of the project, he said the DPR for the project was also being prepared and all hurdles regarding would be overcome on an urgent basis. Replying on the woes of farmers regarding non-payment of compensation amount, he categorically said as the project commenced all such matters would be expedited on a priority basis. The project will go a long way in meeting the galloping energy requirement triggered by a rapid development and industrialisation of the state. The unwarranted delay in the construction of Lakhwar (420-MW)- Vyasi (120-MW) multipurpose hydel project on the Yamuna, 42 km from Mussoorie, have already cost the exchequer a big amount and is giving anxiety to farmers. Members of the Lakhwar-Vyasi Kasthkar Sangarsh Samiti, Sultan Singh and Milki Ram Aggarwal, have welcomed the move. But, they said furthermore delay would break the backbone of farmers as they had waited too long since 1974. With the construction of the ambitious project, the SC-ST dominated area would develop further and provide a new source of income to the region. It would also create additional source of income to the state as its in-house agency, the UJVNL, would have complete control of the project. The project would also provide water for irrigation on 40,000 hectares. The project will provide additional water to the Dhakrani, Dalipur and Kulhal power houses. The farmers have also demanded that the remaining compensation should also be paid to them immediately as they were unable to cultivate their fields. The project will also provide extra water to Delhi and Haryana and create a tourism spot near the reservoir.

Grey Areas in DMC working - VII
Dehradun, July 7 “For such a function, the venue must be equipped with qualitative sound and light system as only then it brings forth the beauty of music, dance and costume to its full glory. The audience too gets to enjoy the resplendent display of our cultural heritage. But, if the venue itself can not offer the basic minimum requirement of arrangement, then it should stop holding such programmes,” said a miffed spectator, Amritpal Singh. On the condition of anonymity, certain dancers lamented as to how the constant interruption due to recurring faults marred their enthusiasm, continuity and spontaneity. “We came all the way from Assam and did rehearsals for weeks to give a good performance and outdo our competitors here, but the poor arrangement has completely spoilt our theme dance,” a dancer said. Sadly, these are not the only lacunae in the Town Hall set up rather it has been riddled with deficiencies. The hall, which was built in 1939 by a philanthropic businessman, is considered quite an apt place for holding all kinds of functions, for being a government building and placed in the middle of the city. But, despite the significance it carries and that too for being a part of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation, it has been most vehemently ignored for several years. Almost all seats are broken which presents a very ugly picture of the hall and makes audience uncomfortable. Throughout the summer, the air-conditioning system has not worked and audiences continued to sweat out. The plaster on the walls has chipped out and the floor roughed up. Not a single thing seems to be in place in the hall. When Mayor Vinod Chamoli was asked about the deteriorating condition of the Town Hall, as usual he talked of a proposal in the pipeline in this regard. “A committee, named as the Infrastructure Development Fund Committee, comprising representatives of various government departments such as the Water Works, PWD, Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority and the DMC itself, has prepared modalities to the tune of Rs 1.54 crore to overhaul the infrastructure of the Town Hall. The matter got delayed due to some more explanations and changes sought by the Commissioner but that too has been sorted out. In a year’s time, new seats, air-conditioning, light and sound systems, etc, will be in place. (Concludes) |
Queen’s Baton gets religious welcome in Haridwar
Haridwar, July 7 Haridwar stamped a different colour to the Queen’s Baton relay that has traversed territories of 70 nations and across the length and breadth of the country. The city is already getting familiar with the concept of the Commonwealth through the special Exhibition Train Express. The enthusiasm touched another level with mass participation seen in the wee hours. In the background the soothing music of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) band, the Ganga aarti presented a spectacular view at the Har-ki-Pauri. After the aarti and religious rituals, the relay team then took the baton on motorboat from Har-ki-Pauri to the adjacent ghats, passing through Malviya and Subash ghats. Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Gunjiyal with state Cabinet Minister Madan Kaushik holding the baton on the boat led the baton relay team on the boat. The cavalcade disembarked at Lal Taura Bridge from where the relay started covering Shiv Moorti Chowk, railway station, bus station, Devpura, Rishikul, Ranipur Mod and then assembled at Bhagat Singh Chowk where title sponsor Hero Honda welcomed the baton. Students lined up in numbers waving flags, holding balloons. After a brief halt, the baton rally then moved on vehicles to cover the 15-km stretch till the SIDCUL-situated Hero Honda industry where the concluding ceremony was held with the baton then flying over to Srinagar Garhwal for the journey ahead. Sportspersons along with District Magistrate R Meenakshi Sundaram, Vice-Chancellor, Gurukul Kangri University, Prof Swatantra Kumar, district administrative officers, eminent citizens and hundreds of people accompanied the baton relay. Though on the whole the rally was a successful one, yet local residents complained of administration not doing enough to publicise the event, which was for the first time that the city got to witness. Specially welcome stalls and the conclusion venue by one of the title sponsor made entry of common citizens quite impossible as company security guards cordoned off the area making access to the baton relay proceedings from near a distant dream. |
Rain god shows mercy as baton reaches Nainital
Nainital, July 7 The baton arrived a bit late from Garhwal as the chopper that was to fly it to Kailakhan helipad had to land at Haldwani instead. Even as Nainital wore a blanket of fog, the rains decided to delay their fall for the occasion. The baton was received with traditional warmth and gaiety as Chholia dancers welcomed its arrival at the Tallital bus stand. Its reception in Nainital was marked by the release of tri-coloured balloons, fireworks and blaring music with everyone enjoying the festive mood. The baton then moved towards the Flats Grounds in Mallital through the Mall Road that had hundreds of children lining the route with fluttering national flags in their hands. The arrival at the District Sports Office (DSA) premises was again marked by a reception by Chholia dancers. Schoolchildren dressed in kits of various games lined the route to the DSA office and there was a band playing popular tunes. Children from various schools formed a human chain at the Flats Grounds while those from Oakwood School gave a performance of gymnastics and acrobatics. Balloons were released at the venue. Local population had turned up in large numbers at the Flats Grounds to witness the event. The Queen’s Baton designed for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October this year has an 18-carat gold leaf o the top with the message of the British Queen engraved on it. It has a brown body that represents the colour of the different soils. The bend given to it represents the phenomenon of aerodynamics. It has an inbuilt camera, a voice recorder and a GPS system. It also shows the colour of the coutry from where it is passing in the backdrop. Sports Manager for the event Col KS Banshtu said, “The message is written on the gold leaf to depict our ancient practice of writing on leaves. The baton is a mix of tradition and modernity. It has spread the message of ‘Peace Through Sport’ through the countries it has crossed on way to India which is the host”. The baton for this year’s games will cover a distance of 1,90,000 km and it has covered 1,72,000 km till now. “This is double the distance that was covered for the previous games held in Melbourne and Manchester,” said Col Banshtu. The Queen's Baton Relay is an exercise similar to the Olympic Torch Relay. It is a relay held around the countries that are a member of the British Commonwealth prior to the beginning of the Commonwealth Games. It carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, currently Queen Elizabeth II. The relay begins from Buckingham Palace in London as a part of the city's Commonwealth Day festivities. The Queen entrusts the baton to the first relay runner which in this case was ace shooter Abhinav Bindra. At the opening ceremony of the games, the final relay runner hands the baton back to the Queen or her representative, who reads the message aloud to officially declare the games open. |
Haridwar filth puts Aditi off
Haridwar, July 7 Aditi Gowatrikar, who was in the Kumbh city for the first time, spoke at length about her life, career and the pollution that has robbed the pilgrim city of its natural environment. The first thing the ace model noticed while entering Haridwar was the garbage, filth spread all over, while the pollution in the holy Ganga makes her sad. “Sites in the city are quite contrary to my imagination. The city is quite unhygienic, polluted. Common people and authorities should take steps to tackle this situation”. Perturbed by this, Aditi even offered to be a part of any such campaign which involves cleaning of the Ganga and the whole city. “Why not, definitely I will be glad to be associated with such campaigns in a city which has religious significance worldwide,” answered Aditi when The Tribune suggested her being a part of any such programme would be immensely helpful. Congratulating Manasvi Mamgain on bringing laurels to the Uttarakhand state, Aditi lamented that small cities still didn’t have much options in terms of glamorous career and had to venture out to metro cities to gain exposure as well as right opportunities. Though she cautioned that a bit of preparedness to fight in the man’s world would see them get through the struggle. “Struggle and insecurity is in every field, but determination, caution, preparation and resource management are required to survive in metro cities,” advised Aditi who herself hails from suburban Panvel in Maharashtra. On her experience working with legendary Amitabh Bachchan and mercurial Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood movie “Paheli”, she said it was fun and a lifetime experience stating that prior to and after the film, her onscreen skills too transformed by learning intricacies of acting by only watching them. Aditi is still not satisfied with her film career and wants to do roles that suit her personality while craving for the roles essayed by Kangana Ranaut like in “Fashion” and “Gangster” characters which have dark and grey shades. So, how does she maintain a balance when it comes to her hectic schedule and family. Pat comes the reply: “My profession is like freelancing. So I can adjust timings. Besides I don’t plan, as nothing happened as per plan. I wanted to have a nursing home, pursue gynaecology, but modelling came my way and then films, television, anchoring and a horde of related activities,” revealed Aditi who has featured with Hrithik Roshan in a soft drink campaign, besides featuring in dozens of advertisements. Currently Aditi is heading to Singapore for an untitled Bollywood project while contemplating on small screen programmes. She was one of the glamour girl participants in the highly successful “Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi” reality show. “My fear factor really zeroed after that scintillating experience, when you have anchor such as Akshay Kumar and tough participants from the same field. It’s not fear, but winning that takes on,” reacted Aditi who also shot into fame with another reality show “Big Boss”. Aditi on knowing that The Tribune is being published from Dehradun sought details and voiced that whenever in Chandigarh she just goes down through the paper. |
