Foreign dreams turn sour
Girls trapped in prostitution nexus
Kusum Arora/Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 2
The lure of greener pastures, coupled with the nexus of a fake travel agent, has landed two girls into the vicious circle of forcible prostitution. The girls have been trapped at Singapore since June 19.

President of Lok Bhalai Party, Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, lodged a complaint with the district police in this regard. Parvesh Kumar, alias Mintu, the Jalandhar-based travel agent not only duped the girls in the name of providing them with jobs, but has been blackmailing their family to provide an extra amount of Rs 2 lakh if they wanted their daughters back home safely. The duo had paid Rs 1 lakh to the agent for reaching Singapore.

Amandeep Kaur (24), a resident of Tarn Taran, left for Singapore on June 16. The girl was promised a job on a monthly salary of Rs 35,000.

However, on reaching Singapore, the girl was not given any job, instead asked to take to the flesh trade and beaten up. Another girl, Suman, from Kaki Pind in Rama Mandi, Jalandhar, also left for Singapore along with Amandeep.

The girls reached Singapore on June 19. Davinder Kaur, the mother of Amandeep Kaur, appealed before the media for the early rescue of her daughter.

“I received calls from my daughter who informed me that the travel agent is beating her and forcing her to take to prostitution. Now the agent is demanding another Rs 2 lakh as an amount to release her from Singapore”, she added. She also said though her family managed to arrange Rs 50,000 for the release of her daughter, but to no avail.

“Parvesh sent me his account number through SMS and asked me to deposit the money in his account at the earliest. I am virtually helpless as I mortgaged everything to send my daughter abroad,” she rued.

Earlier, Suman worked with a dance troupe at the local eating joint Haveli, situated on the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway.

It was here that she got in touch with the travel agent and was lured on the pretext of a two-year work permit at Singapore.

Lambasting the consecutive state governments for their failure to control rampant human trafficking, Ramoowalia said an approximate 8,000 girls have landed in the flesh trade in the past eight years. “It is a pity that despite raising such matters in the media from time to time, the government refuses to wake up from its slumber”, he added.

Duped by agents
Amarjit Thind/Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 2
Another person from the city has fallen prey to travel agents who seem to have a free run of the state in the absence of corrective measures to bring the latter to book.

Rama Mandi resident Jasvir Singh has alleged that he was duped of Rs 5.50 lakh by Chandigarh-based agents - Indian Immigration Services, Sector 34-A - on the promise that he would be sent to a European country of his choice. Run by Aman Sandhu, Ram Bilas and Sonia, the firm regularly advertised in the media their expertise in sending people abroad, he said.

Since he opted for France, he was told to arrange Rs 1.50 lakh since he would be sent there from Thailand. “I boarded a flight on April 22 and landed in Bangkok where an agent received me and put me up in a hotel. I stayed there for over a month and was assured by Sandhu that the visa application was being processed,” he added.

In the meantime, the agents contacted my in-laws and told them that they had not been able to arrange a visa for France but they had secured one for Spain. They showed a copy of the visa and asked for Rs 2.50 lakh which was given to them, he said.

“Following this, I was asked to fly to Singapore where my visa was awaiting. I flew from there to Spain but was stopped by the immigration authorities at Doha where I was told that my visa was a forgery,” he revealed.

“Harassed by the turn of events, I came back to India on May 29 and contacted the agents who told me to give my passport back to one Subash in Karol Bagh. I was told that they could send me to Spain via Kathmandu if I could arrange Rs 4.50 lakh,” he said.

“I told them I could not do so since the earlier money too had been arranged after selling my taxi and whatever else I owned. I asked them to return my passport (F 4664937) but they refused to do so,” he added. Jasvir said he had lodged his complaint with the authorities at Chandigarh and Jalandhar. The Anti-Fraud Staff here had summoned the agents for questioning on July 6, he informed.

Jalandhar, July 2
Taking cognizance of the report about fleecing of public at an illegal parking lot outside the district administrative complex which appeared in The Tribune today, the Deputy Commissioner has decided to issue a show-cause notice to the contractor.

DC Priyank Bharti said he had ascertained the facts that the contractor who had been authorised for parking within the complex had also been illegally running a parking lot outside the complex on the road leading to Master Tara Singh Nagar.

The DC said he had even checked up with the Municipal Corporation authorities which too confirmed that the parking was illegal. In fact, the contractor had even put up a board reading “Nagar Nigam parking theke te (meaning parking on contract by Municipal Corporation). The board did not even mention the rates, further flouting norms.

This morning, when this correspondent took a round of the area, the contractor’s men were still busy collecting charges from those using the roadside parking.

The revelation came after a city-based RTI activist Rajinder Bhatia had asked for information regarding authorised parking lots in the city. The MC officials had replied that 11 parking lots had been auctioned but for the last financial year. Assistant Commissioner D.P. Bhardwaj had confirmed that no auction could be conducted successfully this year.

RTI activist Bhatia said at least 1,000 cars were parked during the entire day and the man had been minting lakhs of rupees right under the nose of the administration and judiciary.
