Tribune News Service

Patiala, June 23
The four-day final of the Under-19 Dhruv Pandove Trophy got underway at the Burtlon Park, Jalandhar, between Jalandhar and Patiala today. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Patiala were bundled out for 176 runs in 66.5 overs. The wrecker in chief was the duo of off spinners, Jagrit Singh and Gurkirat Singh, who accounted for all 10 wickets. The dominance of this spinning pair saw Patiala tumbled down to 112 for seven after making a steady start of 56 for the first wicket between Vikramdit Singh and Gauravjit Singh.

The stand was broken when Gauravjit was castled by off spinner Gurkirat Singh for 26.

From there on, Patiala kept on losing wickets. The only batsman, who was good with the bat, was opener Vikramdit Singh, who made a valiant 60 off 103 balls. Karan Kaila and Amarinder Singh stitched a 49-run partnership for the eighth wicket before Karan Kalia was snapped by wicketkeeper Mandeep Singh Jr on Jagrit Singh ball for a well-made 43 off 71 deliveries.

Patiala innings ended at 176 for all in 66.5 overs. Jagrit Singh 24-9-46-5 and Gurkirat Singh 23.5-3-75-5 did not allow the Patiala batsmen to settle down.

Jalandhar started their innings on a rousing note with their opener Pargat Singh and Mandeep Singh Jr putting on 32 runs for the first wicket. Pargat Singh mashed 27 runs off 13 balls before he was lured by left arm spinner Amarinder Singh to be neatly stumped by wicketkeeper Vikarat Sirohi. Mandeep Jr at this stage was joined by Himanshu Satyawan and the two raised 66 runs before Himanshu Satyawan was caught by Vikarat off the bowling of right arm leg spinner Bhavish Goel.

Jalandhar were 119 for two at close of play in 26 overs. Mandep Singh Jr was unbeaten on 43 of 84 deliveries, while Akash Rathore (seven not out) was keeping him company.

Nine held for assault in separate incidents at Burail
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 23
The assorted bunch of toughs who kept the city police on its toes last night during two separate incidents of assault that occurred in and around Burail village turned out be hooligans, not “terrorists”.

In an ostensible bid to thwart a “terrorist attack”, a group of armed youngsters armed with swords, baseball bats and batons barged into a Sector 45 house and indiscriminately assaulted eight labourers. The victims were later admitted to the Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32 with multiple injuries. Two of them, who are in a critical condition, are battling for their lives at GMCH and PGI.

Clarifying on last night’s incident in which a hotel in Burail village, Hotel Shalimar, reported an “attack by terrorists”, DSP (south) Vijay Kumar said it was not a terrorist strike. “Rather, some local goons created a ruckus and assaulted four youths staying at the hotel. No gunshots were fired during the incident”, he asserted. “We have thoroughly examined the scene. Our investigations revealed four residents of Bathinda, who had been staying at the hotel, were in fact assaulted by goons from Burail. We’ve arrested four people in this connection”, Kumar said.

The police said a case of rioting, causing injury and criminal intimidation had been filed against Gurdeep alias Happy, Munish alias Goldy, Sanjay alias Sanju, Vikas alias Vicky and Rama Kant, all residents of Burail. The five suspects, who were named in the complaint, were arrested and produced before a local court, which sent them to jail.

The four people who were attacked have been identified as Gagandeep, Parasdeep, Sharandeep and Mandeep - all students of a polytechnic college in Bathinda. Efforts are on to trace them.

About the reasons leading to the assault, a police officer said the suspects told the cops some members of the other group had urinated on them from the hotel’s first floor. “They then went upstairs to teach them a lesson. It’s highly unlikely for strangers to indulge in such mischief against a group of local youngsters. Things will only be cleared when the other group gives its part of the story,” the officer added.

About the attack on the labourers, the DSP said four people - identified as Sonu Shah, Prince, Dilbar and Sukhwinder Singh, all resident of Burail - had been arrested after registering a case of attempted murder, rioting, causing hurt and criminal trespassing in connection with the murderous assault. Their fifth accomplice, Parveen, is absconding. The suspects were produced before a local court, which remanded them to one-day police custody.

The injured have been identified as Mehboob, Akbar, Chander, Taslim, Abdul, Ram Lal, Sazid and Sadam. Ram Lala, a Nepalese national, sustained severe head injuries and was referred to PGI from GMCH. Another seriously injured victim, Abdul, was admitted to GMCH.

Sources close to the police said one of the victims had been allegedly harassing Price’s sister. Prince along with a group of over a dozen armed youths, indiscriminately assaulted the victims after barging into the house where they were living.

The police said all the suspects involved in both incidents were “notorious” and had been indulging in “antisocial activities”. The cops are examining past records to find out their involvement in criminal incidents.
