Bumper litchi yield sweetens deals of Doon orchard owners
Dehradun, June 9 Due to adverse summer conditions in April and May, when the temperature touched even 40 degrees Celsius, the rose scented variety grown in Dehradun was hit by fluctuation in soil moisture, leading to splitting of the rind or pericarp, forcing the orchard owners to sell the fruit in the local market. The prices too settled around Rs 50-Rs 80 per kg, as more litchi fruit began arriving in the market. “Usually temperature between 30-35 degrees Celsius is said to be ideal for development of the pulp. The Horticulture Department had advised us to undertake regular water spraying for maintaining the moisture content,” said Sanjay Chetri, a farmer from Vikas Nagar. While the Horticulture Department is still tabulating the figure, the litchi producing areas of Doiwala, Sahaspur, Vikasnagar and Kalsi may even exceed production estimates this year. In Dehradun district around 3,684 hectares is under litchi production and last year the production was around 5,716 metric tonne. While an area comprising 9,000 hectares was under litchi production in Uttarakhand and last year, the total production was 15,000 metric tonne. “The flowering was exceptionally good this season and we could tide over the water scarcity till April, but in May the conditions became bad and the fruit began to split. Dust storms in mid may and early June too had some effect on the fruit bearing trees but we will be able to increase our production,” said Dr Amar Singh, District Horticulture Officer. Belonging to soapberry family, litchis with small seed are preferred in the export market. But, this condition can only be achieved if the temperature hovers between 30-35 degrees Celsius in April and May. “The quality of the pulp has been affected due to unusually hot summer months and it may not be suitable for exports and since the unit has been revived only few months, we need to start the exercise once again,” said Dr Nitin Upadhyay, Manager, Agri Export Development Unit (AEDU). The state has so far exported the fruit to the United Arab Emirates and Dubai. After the creation of the state the government had started in right earnest by creating an Agri Export Development Unit (AEDU) in the capital, to be responsible for exploring the market potential of the fruit in the foreign markets and even act as a facilitator. But, midway the unit became defunct and was only revived in December 2009. |
Vacation on, teenagers make beeline for Doon tourist spots
Dehradun, June 9 A student of Carman School, Priyanka said: “The major reason of these spots being so attractive is the pleasant summer season here. It is very warm in other districts south of it”. She also added that it had sub-tropical climate with cold winter, warm and crisp springs and a strong monsoon, hence preferred mostly by teenagers. The places of importance among the youth is Robert’s Cave. The cave is a natural picnic spot surrounded by hills. “Here water suddenly disappears from the sight and goes underground only to reappear after a few yards in the form of a stream,” said Neeru, a resident of Dehradun. Sahastradhara makes an ideal picnic spot and is of immense attraction to visitors. “Sulphur water” flowing in Sahastradhara is of immense importance as it has a high medicinal value. “It provides a breathtaking view and it’s a place where you can have lots of fun and chill out both with your family and friends,” says Shifali. The Malsi Deer Park is a mini-zoological park comprising a children’s park enveloped in beautiful natural surroundings. Along with the attractive environs, the availability of refreshments makes the place an ideal sightseeing-cum-picnic spot. Lachhiwala, another water spot, is also attracting a large number of youth. Apoorva Arya, a college student, says: “The air is devoid of any pollution and teenagers are attracted towards Lachhiwala.” It is a fun-filled torist place, she added. According to BS Negi, “It is a good getaway on a hot summer day.” Dakpather is another beautiful tourist spot in the west of Dehradun, which is a favourite with young people of surrounding areas. According to Vandana Punj, a tourist, Doon has also developed many water parks in recent years such as, Fun Valley, Fun-n-Food Kingdom and Joy Land, which offer various amusement slides to the young crowd.” Shivam Rastogi, a student, says: “Dehradun has developed various gaming zones like Hijinks, Baskin Robbin and Hot Spot where teenagers usually like to hangout.” Dhanaulti is also liked by not only teenagers but also by people of all ages to give them relief from hot summers, he adds. |

Govt still counting out-of-school children
Neena Sharma Tribune News Service
Dehradun, June 9 Conservative estimates made by the Central government peg the requirement of financial assistance for implementing the Act at Rs 1,450 crore that can further increase when the actual implementation begins. The Chief Minister, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, has already written to the Central government about the constraints that the small state is facing. The amount would be used for building schools, buying new furniture and payment to be made to teachers, among others. While the Right to Education Act came into existence in the state in April, 2010, the state government is yet to corroborate the number of children that are out of school and the number of schools to be designated as neighbourhood schools. A Government of India agency had surveyed that total number of children out of school are between 40,000 and 50,000 while the survey undertaken under a Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan survey had pegged the number at 8,000. “We will be undertaking a survey shortly to ascertain the number of students out of school and special focus will be on the slums and migrant population living in cities, including Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Haldwani. The figure is expected to go up. The house-to-house survey will give us a clear picture,” said Secretary (Education) Manisha Pawar. The state Education Department has also not undertaken a third party evaluation of 98 per cent enrolment that it claims in the schools. Education experts point out that despite the fact that the focus of the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for the past eight years has been to universalise education and increase enrolment, the number of out-of-school children may go up due to arise in migrant population. |
Shooting star fades in absence of resources
Dehradun, June 9 He was the only player from Uttarakhand and one of the three from India to be selected to participate in the Asian championship. “My parents have sold their land near Sharanpur to help me continue shooting, but now they can not sell their house to make me play,” said Rajendra who has five national gold medals to his credit. “I have no weapon to practise and no money to play in international events. I tried to approach the Chief Minister of the state for financial help, but went in vain as I was not allowed to meet him or put forth my issue there,” he
adds. Rajendra said Rs 60,000 to Rs 1 lakh is required if one wants to properly practise and play in the nationals, while the expenditure is of at least Rs 1.5 lakh to take part in the international events. “I started playing the game as a hobby and medals kept coming in. Everybody motivated me to play further saying that I will get support from the government one day. But nothing has changed even after a good stint at the international level,” rues Rajendra who is running a shop near his residence at Deepnagar in
Dharampur. “If you win medals at national or international levels in other states, you are rewarded with cash prizes, but in Uttarakhand there hasn’t been even a single penny given to the players. Others who have money are playing for the sake of name, while the deserving players in the long run are quitting to play in the absence of any financial support,” he said “I still have the will and the passion to play, but I can not help it. I have to quit playing now,” said dejected
Rajendra. |
