The CBI today booked a Sub-Inspector of the Chandigarh Police on charges of demanding bribe from a Sangrur resident to release his car. The complainant, Kuldeep Singh, alleged that SI Charanjit Singh had illegally “detained” his Skoda Octavia following a complaint against him a week ago and demanded Rs 10,000 for its release.

Large LCD and plasma screens, special dishes and discount coupons, loud music when a goal is scored, flags and official T-shirts of the top teams. This is what soccer fans can expect at several happening places like hotels, pubs, discos and clubs during the month-long 19th FIFA World Cup 2010, scheduled to kick off on June 11. While many groups of youngsters have already planned to enjoy the topmost action at these places, owners of several hotels, discos, pubs and clubs are also looking forward to cash in on the opportunity.

One injured in accident

One person was injured following a collision between two vehicles at Zirakpur flyover here this morning. The injured has been identified as Manpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 15, Chandigarh.

MC to get 20 acres as landfill site

To ease the load on the existing dumping ground at Dadu Majra, the Chandigarh administration has decided to hand over a chunk of 20 acre to the Chandigarh municipal corporation as landfill site to dump city’s garbage.

Harbans Singh Gill, a resident of Sector 51, today accused Sector a 22-based jeweller, Nikka Mal Babu Ram, of selling him a necklace of impure gold. Gill also accused the Chandigarh police dragging its feet on his complaint for over a month. Addressing mediapersons at Sector 35, Gill said he had lodged a complaint with the UT SSP through public window on May 4 and an inquiry was marked to the crime branch. The crime branch was still conducting the inquiry.

A committee constituted under nominated councillor MPS Chawla to review the state of the compliant centre at the Chandigarh municipal corporation office has recommended the setting up of a toll-free number to promptly resolve the civic grievances of residents. The Panjab University’s academic council has endorsed the recommendation of the Punjab government to scrap entrance exam for Bachelors of Education (BEd) course in all affiliated colleges in Punjab from the academic session 2011-2012.

Panjab University issued a cheque from a bank account that does not exist. Issued by the Assistant Registrar (Accounts) on May 25, 2010, the cheque was returned to the applicant with the remarks- “No such account/ account closed”.

Four members of the Panjab University’s Senate have objected to a resolution passed at the Senate meeting of December 2009. The objection has been raised through a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor on June 6, 2010 signed by four Senators.

After the rain that lashed the town on Tuesday, the condition of National Highway-22, which passes through Kalka, Pinjore and link roads of Kalka, has become deplorable. A visit by The Tribune team revealed that the stretch from Kalka Gandhi Chowk to Kalka-Parwanoo barrier and in the main bazaar of Pinjore has turned into bad shape after the rain, posing a serious threat of accidents.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Central Board of School Education to declare by Monday the result of Pranjay Jain, a dyslexic student. He had appeared for the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the board in April.

Couple robs woman of cash, gold
Mohali, June 9
A woman of Phase VI was deprived of gold ornaments and cash by a couple who came to her house as prospective tenants here yesterday. According to reports, Darshan Kaur, who works in the PGI, Chandigarh, was robbed of a gold ring, necklace, bangles and Rs 30,000. A laptop was also taken away by the couple.

Family booked for kidnapping girl
Chandigarh, June 9
The police registered a case of kidnapping against the family members of a Bhiwani-based girl on a complaint lodged by her husband. The complainant Sandeep Kumar, resident of Guskani village, Bhiwani district, reported to the police yesterday that occupants of a Mahindra Scorpio kidnapped his wife from near Himachal Bhawan in Sector 28. They also threatened him of dire consequences.

U-19 Cricket
Match ends in draw
Patiala, June 9
The match between Patiala and Bathinda was drawn today during the U-19 Inter-District Tournament, which began at the Dhruva Pandove Stadium. The two-day match, which was to begin yesterday, was delayed due to rain and therefore was made one-day match. Winning the toss, Bathinda put Patiala to bat first.

Summer camps conclude
Chandigarh, June 9
The 15-day summer sports coaching camps concluded today at various places in Punjab. The camps were held in various disciplines, including athletics, kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, boxing, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, judo, swimming, basketball and shooting. These camps were held for trainees of the sports wings. A total of 500 trainees of the Olympian Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar and Football Academy of Hoshiarpur attended the camps.
