NH-22 link roads turn worse after rain
No repair, re-carpeting done in five years

After the rain that lashed the town on Tuesday, the condition of National Highway-22, which passes through Kalka, Pinjore and link roads of Kalka, has become deplorable. A visit by The Tribune team revealed that the stretch from Kalka Gandhi Chowk to Kalka-Parwanoo barrier and in the main bazaar of Pinjore has turned into bad shape after the rain, posing a serious threat of accidents.

The link roads from Kalka Gandhi Chowk to Tipra via Khatik Mohalla, which approaches Pinjore-Kalka-Parwanoo (under construction) and link road from Kalka to Khera Sita Ram are also in a deplorable state.

The rain also damaged the approach road of the Kaushalya of Pinjore-Mallaha road. Due to landslide, residents of 40 villages on Raitan area were cut from Pinjore, which added to traffic woes. Link roads of Kalka that fall under the Railway department have been turned into a deplorable state since last couple of years due to apathetic attitude of the department of IOW (Inspector of Works).

These link roads, which are in dire need of maintenance, have not been repaired and re-carpeted since past five years, alleged inhabitants of the Railway colonies. They alleged that railway authorities never bothered about the maintenance of these link roads.

Various link roads of railway department have been lying in deplorable state, despite the fact that R Velu, Minister of State for Railways, had visited the railway station in connection with the Heritage Festival on November 9, 2008.

The deteriorating condition of these link roads is resulting in some serious accidents. The link road from Railway station to NH-22 has turned into bad shape. The link road from railway station which connects the Narrow Gauge Railway Colony via RPF office, Railway Institute and Railway Diesel Shed are all in worse condition, the stretch specially the Kalka-Shimla level crossing with huge potholes is posing a great threat to life.

The link road from Kalka GRP police station to Kalka main bazaar, NH-22, and road from NH-22 connecting the Broad Gauge Railway Colony is in total neglect, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and two-wheeler riders.

The internal link roads connecting the NG Railway colony to Northern Railway Workshop is also in pitiable condition.

CPI demands probe in factory worker’s death

Dera Bassi, June 9
Leaders of Communist Party of India (CPI) have demanded an inquiry in the death of the factory worker who died under mysterious conditions.

District secretary of the CPI Baldev Singh Jhaj said in a statement here today that Anand Mishra, a worker of Indo Swift factory, on the Dera Bassi-Barwala road, died after being exposed to dangerous gas which originated from the mixture of chemicals.

CPI leaders alleged that this matter was not reported to the police and the autopsy of the deceased was not conducted. Meanwhile, factory manager Atul Kumar Chobey could not provide a clear reply in this regard.

Chobey claimed that worker died with ordinary disease, but when he could not provide any proof in this regard when asked for the same.

He said Mishra was given the first aid in Apna Hospital, Dera Bassi. However, the hospital management denied the entry of such a patient when inquired.

CA Murder Case
Defence witnesses record statement

Contrary to the police story that Ishwinder Singh, involved in the chartered accountant murder case, was arrested from the railway station, the defence witnesses today stated in the court that he was arrested from his uncle’s residence.

The two witnesses — Jagjit Singh and Maj NS Bhangoo — stated before the court of district and sessions judge SK Goyal that the accused was arrested from his uncle’s residence. The two witnesses were later cross-examined.

The statement of another defence witness, a bank employee, was also recorded today.

The case was then adjourned to July 28 for recording the statement of remaining witnesses.

The victim, Rajesh Goel, was found murdered in his Sector 42 office on May 22, 2007. The police had arrested prime accused Kanav Arora who had allegedly hired a contract killer along with three others on May 23, 2007. The accused were booked for trespass and murder on the statement of Kamlesh, Goel’s peon.

The peon was in the office on the day the crime took place and had reportedly gone to get photocopies of some documents.

When he returned, a person standing outside the cabin detained him.

The car of Ishwinder Singh was allegedly used by the murderers.

Declare dyslexic student’s result, HC directs CBSE

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Central Board of School Education to declare by Monday the result of Pranjay Jain, a dyslexic student. He had appeared for the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the board in April.

While hearing Jain’s application, Justice Ranjit Singh issued the directions for declaring the result. The board had declared the results of all candidates on May 30, except Pranjay as he was granted one hour extra on direction from the court. The matter was still pending. The high court had earlier stated that dyslexic children, appearing for the AIEEE, should be given an hour’s extra time for each paper.

However, Chandigarh resident Pranjay Jain, who was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 10, had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for allowing a scribe for him for the AIEEE exams.

In its orders passed on April 25, the high court allowed him one hour extra time for the examination. The high court, subsequently, on May 26 issued directions to the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development to consider dyslexic Pranjay in the category of physically disabled during the counselling of the AIEEE and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)- 2010 examination. The case will now come up for hearing on July 20.

Couple robs woman of cash, gold

Mohali, June 9
A woman of Phase VI was deprived of gold ornaments and cash by a couple who came to her house as prospective tenants here yesterday.

According to reports, Darshan Kaur, who works in the PGI, Chandigarh, was robbed of a gold ring, necklace, bangles and Rs 30,000. A laptop was also taken away by the couple.

She said she had to rent out a part of her house and had put a “To Let” board outside the building. A couple had come to see the vacant part of the house on Monday, which they liked and the rent for the accommodation was fixed.

They were asked to come again the next day. The couple went to the house yesterday when it was raining. As they had got wet Darshan Kaur went to the kitchen to make tea for them. The couple followed her to the kitchen and overpowered her.

They removed her ring, necklace and two bangles and also took cash from her purse. They left her in the kitchen and bolted the door from outside. She came out after raising the alarm, but the couple had left by then. The matter is being investigated by the police.

Family booked for kidnapping girl

The police registered a case of kidnapping against the family members of a Bhiwani-based girl on a complaint lodged by her husband.

The complainant Sandeep Kumar, resident of Guskani village, Bhiwani district, reported to the police yesterday that occupants of a Mahindra Scorpio kidnapped his wife from near Himachal Bhawan in Sector 28. They also threatened him of dire consequences.

Sandeep told the police that he married 23-year-old Suman against her parents wish. They solemnised their marriage at Arya Samaj Temple in Sector 22 on Monday.

The girl belongs to an affluent family while he has a humble back ground. They had applied for protection in Punjab and Haryana High Court and were on their way to a hotel in Burail, when she was kidnapped. He called his advocate after the incident and reported the matter to the police.

A case of kidnapping, criminal intimidation and common intention has been registered under Sections 365, 506 and 34 of the IPC.

Theft

Suresh Kumar, a resident of Sector 12, Panchkula, told the police that someone had stolen mobile phones from his shop at NAC, Mani Majra, last night. A case of theft has been registered.

City, Amritsar share one point each

Chandigarh and its rival Amritsar shared one point each in the inaugural match of Punjab State Inter-District U-19 Tournament for Dhruv Pandove Trophy at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium, here today.

With the washing away of the first day’s play due to rain yesterday, the match was reduced to 49.4 overs on its final day today as the game could be started after 1 pm due to wet condition.

Chandigarh batted first and put on 160 for two in 49.4 overs with the help of 93-run knock by Manan Vohra.

He was supported by Jaskaran, who chipped in 38, while Naveen Dhiman remained unbeaten on 23.

Jaskaran was snapped by wicket-keeper Mohit Handa, while Vohra lost his cool when he was just seven runs short of his ton. He was stumped by Mohit Handa off Vinay Chaudhary. His 93 runs inning was studded with 12 boundaries.

Vohra, who is in good form, had already scored three centuries in the U-22 cricket tournament, concluded a week ago.

The result of the second match between Patiala and Bathinda also remained similar as both the teams were awarded with one point each.

Batting first, Patiala declared their inning on 162 for six in 47 overs. In reply, Bathinda scored 87 for three in 25 overs.

The match started at 12.10 pm. For Patiala, Vicky Sharma finished as the highest scorer with unbeaten 70 runs, while Mehjot Sodhi hit 26 runs.

Gurjant Singh (three for 25) was the main bowler for Bathinda.

In the third match at Ludhiana, Mohali accumulated two points by trouncing Ludhiana on the basis of first inning lead of 35 runs.

Chasing Ludhiana’s first innings total of 359, Mohali was at 394 for six in 95 overs to win the match.

Harpreet Mander (113) and Sohrab Dhaliwal (105) were the guiding force behind the win.

City team reach quarterfinals

With just two days left for the FIFA World Cup 2010, the Chandigarh junior football team brought cheers to the local fans by reaching the quarterfinals during the 47th Junior Football Championship (U-19) for Dr BC Roy being played at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

The team has created history after playing goalless draw against Mizoram in the final league match, following which the team moved ahead for the next stage on the basis of goal average.

Icing on the cake was 13 goals scored by the Chandigarh team in three matches. The team proved better of Kerala (6-0) and Gujarat (7-0).

Elated Rakesh Bakshi, secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA), said the association had been sending players for the championship since 1998, the year, when the association got recognition from All-India Football Federation. “But for the first time, we have managed to clear the pool at junior level,” said Bakshi, adding that the team achieved the feat despite facing adverse conditions.

“As Kolkata is reeling under severe heat conditions and matches are being played on astroturf ground, our players have been facing a great difficulty,” said Bakshi.

Talking over phone from Kolkata, coach Tajinder Kumar said, “Though we have reached the quarterfinals for the first time, I have asked my players to aim at the top-four bracket,” said Tajinder.

Cricket meet from today

The Punjab Today Foundation Cup (under-19) will begin from tomorrow at the BECC cricket ground here.

Two teams, namely BECC, Patiala, and Banaras, would take part in the tournament. A total of four limited over matches (40 over) will be played. The final will be played on June 13.

Match ends in draw

The match between Patiala and Bathinda was drawn today during the U-19 Inter-District Tournament, which began at the Dhruva Pandove Stadium.

The two-day match, which was to begin yesterday, was delayed due to rain and therefore was made one-day match. Winning the toss, Bathinda put Patiala to bat first.

Patiala scored 162 runs in 47 overs after losing six wickets and declared their innings. For Patiala, Vicky Sharma scored 70 runs off 106 balls with nine boundaries. Mahjot Sodhi scored 26 runs off 75 balls with four boundaries and Vikramaditya scored 17 runs off 19 balls with three boundaries. For Bathinda, Gurjant took three wickets after giving 25 runs and Rahul took one wicket after giving 29 runs.

Chasing the target, Bathinda scored 87 runs in 25 overs at a loss of three wickets till the end of the day’s play.

Akshay scored 34 runs off 67 balls with the help of five boundaries. Dhruva scored 22 runs off 50 balls with the help of three boundaries, while Mahavir scored 18 runs off 14 balls with the help of two boundaries.

For Patiala, Amarinder Singh took two wickets after giving 38 balls and Bhavishya Goyal took one wicket for 33 runs. Both districts were given one point each.

Summer camps conclude

Chandigarh, June 9
The 15-day summer sports coaching camps concluded today at various places in Punjab. The camps were held in various disciplines, including athletics, kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, boxing, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, judo, swimming, basketball and shooting. These camps were held for trainees of the sports wings. A total of 500 trainees of the Olympian Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar and Football Academy of Hoshiarpur attended the camps.

Each trainee was provided with a daily diet of Rs 35 and the total budget allocated for the summer coaching camp was Rs 35 lakh. — TNS
