Govt schools to showcase their ‘shining stars’
Bathinda, May 31 Issuing a communiqué, Director General of School Education (DGSE), Punjab, Krishan Kumar recommended that achievements of students in sports, science and other activities should be mentioned on the board. Further, he suggested that the details of the students who achieved success in various fields like medical, engineering and others should also find a mention on the board. Even details of students who went on to score good positions in the MBBS, PPSE, civil services, defence forces, IIT and IIM should also be there, he wrote. Significantly, the board will also have the details of those students who earned a name in the field of politics. About the motive behind the exercise, the DGSE stated it would motivate students to work hard so that they could see their names on the “prestigious” board. “It would also be a good gesture for the students who were the product of the school and have made a mark in various fields. On reading their names on the board in their alma mater, they would surely get attached to the school and make efforts for the progress of the school,” stated the DGSE. He wrote that such details would encourage teachers to improve the quality of education. “Finally, the boards will help in making people believe in the standard of education in government schools,” concluded the DGSE. A number of education officials of Bathinda, Mansa and Muktsar districts termed the gesture as a right step. |

Laying of Mumbai-Bathinda gas pipeline courts controversy
Bathinda, May 31 Among others, farmers nurse resentment over the fixation of the allegedly less compensation for using their agricultural land. The farmers have been demanding a compensation of Rs one crore per acre against the reportedly fixed price of Rs 10 lakh. The controversy erupted on Saturday, when the company contracted was about to start trenching at Gillpatti village from the National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) side. Before the engineers and labourers could start work, farmers of the village assembled and made them leave the place. The protest gained momentum today, when the company officials again took a chance to start the work but the farmers from nearby villages, from where the pipeline would cross, assembled and started lodging a protest. Surrounding the machines, they announced that work would be allowed only after the acceptance of their demand. The hapless officials had to inform the police. Finding the farmers rigid over their demand for compensation, police called the executive magistrate, who listened to their grievances and assured of an amicable solution. Executive magistrate Karnail Singh Bhullar said, “I tried to convince them that in the process, the company will not get the land transferred in its name and it will remain in the name of farmers in the revenue records. The compensation is paid to bar the farmers from doing any agricultural and construction activity on the land beneath which the pipe is laid.” “Despite all negotiations, the farmers were firm over their demand. To resolve the issue, a meeting has been fixed with the DC, SSP and GAIL officials who will arrive here on Tuesday,” said
Bhullar. |

Farmers protest widening of sub-canal
Abohar, May 31 They had come to the town earlier on May 25 but have not been able to convey their anguish as no senior official was present in the office even today. They resolved to fax complaints to the Punjab Governor, CM, Principal Secretary (Irrigation) besides Punjab and Haryana High Court. The protesters said farmers of Khuyiansarwar belt last month opposed construction of special regulator in Malukpura distributary as it was aimed to divert water to some villages of CM’s constituency through Gurusar Jodha sub-canal. Finally, Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal had to intervene when the farmers blocked the regulator site and forced the masons and labourers to run away. However, the department had found an alternate by ensuring unmeasured supply of canal water by replacing the outlet with a huge cement pipe to enhance supply. They warned of launching an
agitation, if the departmental staff continues pursuing the controversial project.
