Admn rejects GMSH report; SDM to hold probe
Chandigarh, May 28
In a major embarrassment for officials of the Government Multispecialty Hospital, Sector 16, authorities, UT health secretary Ram Niwas, today rejected the “internal inquiry” report submitted by the hospital regarding the mysterious death of a 55-year-old woman, Tara Devi, yesterday and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Subdivisional magistrate (south) Prerna Puri will conduct the probe.

In a crucial decision today, an independent judicial inquiry has been marked by Panjab University in the case of “de-recognised Bachelors of Physical Education (BPEd) course” offered by DAV College, Sector 10. A former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court would conduct the inquiry and deadline for the report is one month.

Ailing MC chief offers to step down
Kharar, May 28
Sukhwant Singh Sukha, the president of Kharar Municipal Council, today proposed to step down from his designation in wake of his deteriorating health condition. Leading a group of 10 councillors, Sukha met MLA Ujagar Singh Badali today and said he had proposed to resign. “Sukhwant has been suffering from some liver ailment and has moved an application offering his resignation on medical grounds,” confirmed Badali while talking to the TNS.

Fire-fighters struggle against windy weather, staff shortage
Kharar, May 28
Windy weather and staff shortage made fire fighting tougher for the fire brigade staff members at Behlolpur village today. Around 9.30 am, local residents reported the department that agriculture waste near the periphery of the village had caught fire. Two fire tenders and a water boozer doused flames after struggle of over four-and-a-half hours.

Taking cognisance of a news-report “After DLF, Omaxe wants panchayat land on lease”, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed “till further orders, no land belonging to panchayats shall be leased out to the private companies; and lease if reached, would not be put to operation till further direction from this court”.

Justice Surya Kant today directed the UT administration to open a bank account in the name of the child born to the Nari Niketan rape victim. The National Trust too offered to appoint a special educator for the inmates of Ashreya.

KB DAV school told to refund Rs 7,495

The District Consumer Redressal Forum has directed KB DAV Senior Secondary Public School, Sector 7, to refund Rs 7,495 to the parents of a student who were charged against annual charges and three month tuition fee despite the fact that the student never attended the new session.

HC notice to admn over parking chaos

A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion to the UT administration for July 27 on a petition filed in public interest by city-based NGO Yuvsatta seeking directions to initiate steps to check the increasing number of vehicles in the city, resulting in parking problems.

Development officer gets 2-yr jail

Additional District and Sessions Judge Ritu Garg has awarded two-year imprisonment to a development officer of the Haryana State Cooperative Housing Federation, Panchkula, under the Prevention of Corruption Act here today. A fine of Rs 4,000 has also been imposed on the guilty.

Vigilantes nab two, turn them in
Chandigarh, May 28
In what may reflect poorly on the working of the local police, residents of Kajheri village, acting as vigilantes, apprehended two persons for allegedly stealing 12 buffaloes from the village in the wee hours of today. Fed up with the lackadaisical attitude of the police, the villagers took upon themselves the task of apprehending the culprits after a spate of thefts. They nabbed the two and thrashed them before handing them over to the police.

Police finally arrests 3 in mob attack case

Almost two years after a mob allegedly attacked the Industrial Area police station after a horse-cart driver committed suicide at the police station in July, 2008, the police has arrested three accused in the case.

Girl hangs self after failing in class XII
Chandigarh, May 28
Disturbed over failing in her class XII examination, 17-year-old Navdeep Kaur allegedly hanged herself to death at her Sector-45 residence here this afternoon. The police said the victim did not leave behind any suicide note but her family said she was under a state of depression after the result.

Thieves took away cash, jewellery and other articles after breaking into a house in Ram Darbar last night.

Two held with 7 kg ganja
Chandigarh, May 28
The police has arrested two persons for possessing 7 kg of ganja. The police said Preyag Lal Yadav, a Nepal national, was arrested from Sector 45 with 5 kg of ganja on Tuesday. In another incident, Santosh, a resident of Kajheri village, was arrested from Sector 35 with 2 kg of ganja. Two separate cases have been registered.
